FUT Hair Transplant Cost: Published Prices per Graft, Session and Package

CapitalCurve flew home two days after FUT and was waiting a little under four weeks to have the sutures removed. If you're budgeting for a hair transplant in Thailand, ask who handles that appointment and what it costs before you book.

FUT hair transplant cost depends on the clinic's billing model: Thai Hair Clinic in Chiang Mai publishes $2,250 for 1,000 grafts. Other clinics charge by session size or apply a minimum, so a per-graft rate alone won't give you the full bill.

CapitalCurve wrote on Hair Restoration Network on 31 May 2024: "I have flown home and am awaiting getting my sutures removed in a little under 4 weeks." Dr Cooley in North Carolina normally schedules suture removal for three weeks out, and the office agreed to four because of a business trip. If you fly home from Thailand, ask who does that appointment and where.

FUT means follicular unit transplantation, also called strip harvesting. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) describes removing a strip of scalp and dividing it into grafts for transplantation.

How FUT Is Priced: Per Graft, Per Session or Package

Per-graft pricing

A per-graft price needs a count and any minimum before it becomes a total. So ask whether the quoted rate applies to your whole procedure and what happens if the final count changes.

A lower advertised rate can apply only above a threshold. Keep those pricing details beside the number when you save a quote, otherwise you can end up comparing rates that don't apply to the same procedure size.

Session sizes, graft bands and minimums

A session band gives a price for a stated range of grafts. Feller & Boucher uses this model for FUT, while Limmer uses flat fees for small and medium sessions and per-graft billing above 1,500 grafts.

A minimum is the lowest charge under the clinic's stated terms. Ask for the total at your proposed count, especially when the price page switches between a minimum and a per-graft rate.

Package pricing and graft caps

The clinic sources below don't publish a named FUT travel package with a price and graft cap. A package advertised for another technique can't supply the missing FUT price.

If a clinic offers you a FUT package, ask it to name the procedure, any graft limit and the services included. Keep flights, accommodation and care after departure as separate lines until the clinic confirms their cost.

Why a clinic may price FUT below FUE, or the same

The ISHRS says FUT may cost less than FUE because it requires less surgeon labor. FUE is follicular unit extraction, the other technique named in the clinic price comparisons below.

Hairsmith explicitly charges the same rate for FUT and FUE, but doesn't give a commercial explanation for that choice. So the labor explanation doesn't predict every clinic's price.

Published FUT Prices by Country, From Clinics' Own Pages

The source type matters as much as the currency. A public price schedule, a clinic email and a patient's payment each answer a different question about cost.

Thailand

DHT's figure is a clinic-stated email rate, with no public price-page link for that quote. Thai Hair Clinic's page labels its prices "Last updated 2024 / 2025."

United States

Feller & Boucher's fee schedule says it was updated 1 April 2021. Limmer's article is dated 28 August 2026; ask either clinic to confirm the total and terms for your appointment.

United Kingdom

Harley Street's average describes its own pricing. Neither that figure nor its starting price comes with a graft count, so neither supplies a fixed-count comparison. Its separate graft-count table lists 1,500 to 3,000 grafts as "FUE or FUT," so it does not isolate FUT.

Turkey

Smile Hair Clinic's own packages and Cosmedica's prices carry no FUT price; Smile's page shows FUT only in a wider Turkish market table. Their offers name FUE or DHI, the direct hair implantation label, instead.

Why do Turkish clinics show little or no FUT pricing?

Smile Hair Clinic says FUT "has virtually disappeared" from Turkish clinics. Cosmedica says it "avoids traditional FUT (strip) procedures."

Those statements explain the missing FUT offers at these two clinics. If you're specifically seeking strip surgery in Turkey, confirm that the clinic offers it before comparing package prices.

What a Published FUT Rate Costs at the Clinic's Stated Graft Counts

The examples below use counts the clinics name. The Hairsmith row is our arithmetic; the other totals are printed by the clinics.

Hairsmith's dollar total is ฿80,000 / 33.14 = $2,414.00, rounded to $2,410. It describes the graft charge at that count; ask for the itemized quote before treating it as your total budget.

DHT's minimum covers 1 to 600 grafts. Multiplying its above-600 rate by 600 would ignore the minimum's stated terms.

Keep a starting price in a separate column from fixed-count totals. Giving it an assumed graft count would make the comparison look more precise without adding information from the clinic.

FUT vs. FUE Price at the Same Clinic

The same clinic can publish lower FUT rates, equal rates or higher FUT pricing. Compare the billing units as well as the amounts.

Harley Street describes FUT as more expensive than FUE at its clinics. A blanket rule that strip surgery always costs less would miss that difference.

What Changes a FUT Quote

Graft count affects a per-graft bill, but a clinic's threshold can also change the rate or billing method. So ask which part of its schedule applies to the count it proposes for you.

A session band needs a different question: what happens if the planned count moves outside the band? Get the answer before paying a deposit, including whether the clinic will seek your agreement to a higher total.

Included services affect what remains to budget separately. A quote with tests and follow-up itemized lets you compare those costs; a procedure figure with no breakdown leaves those questions unanswered.

The clinics above are in different cities and countries. Ask about the named surgeon, their role and the facility directly, rather than treating the location or a higher price as an explanation of what you're buying.

What May Be Included, and What to Ask About Separately

Thai Hair Clinic includes daily washes and checks until departure. Its price page doesn't publish arrangements for suture removal after departure, scar-care advice, accommodation or transport.

Harley Street includes checks at 10 days and 3, 6 and 12 months. It lists travel, optional long-term medication and later procedures separately, without stating a separate FUT stitch-removal or scar-care charge.

The following items need an explicit answer in your quote. A service missing from a price page may still be available, but its price and terms need confirming.

A deposit also needs its own line. Feller & Boucher requires a $2,500 non-refundable first payment; ask how any first payment appears against the balance, rather than adding it automatically as an extra fee.

Scar-care advice and stitch removal

The ISHRS says FUT leaves a linear donor scar and the incision is closed with sutures or staples. Include questions about that closure and its follow-up when discussing the price.

On 19 July 2023, cloudyhaze wrote that a buzzcut "would expose the FUT scar." Tell the surgeon how you wear your hair and ask what scar-care advice the quote covers.

Hairsmith schedules suture removal seven days after the procedure. Its care instruction doesn't specify a separate removal charge or establish that removal is included in the published rate.

Follow-up after you go home

Ask who will remove your sutures or staples if you leave before the clinic's appointment. Get the location, timing and payment arrangement agreed with the clinic before booking the return flight.

Ask how follow-up works from home as well: who receives your questions, whether appointments are remote, and whether those appointments carry a fee. So a schedule of clinic visits still needs an attendance plan for an international patient.

How to Compare Two FUT Quotes

Read the number before you compare it

We keep the source type beside each figure because it changes what you can use that figure for. A clinic's public schedule describes its offer; a written quote can name your procedure and its terms.

A patient's payment describes that person's bill at that time. An intermediary listing should be labeled as a listing and checked with the clinic before it enters your budget.

Copy each quote into the same set of fields: technique, source, billing unit, graft count or band, minimum, total and inclusion list. Mark an unanswered item "not published" or "not stated in the quote" so it stays visible.

Ask each clinic to answer the same cost and care questions in writing.

• Is the quote specifically for FUT, and what graft count or session band does it cover?
• Is the fee per graft, per session or a package, and does a minimum apply?
• What total will I pay, and does it include tests and medication? Are taxes included, and how is the deposit credited?
• Which steps will the doctor perform, and which will staff perform?
• Who handles stitch or staple removal after travel, where and at what charge?
• What follow-up is included after returning home, and how will it happen?
• Are scar-care advice, flights, accommodation and local transport included or separately charged?
• What happens to the payment if the date, graft plan or booking changes?

Why a Published FUT Rate Is Not Your Final Price

A rate becomes useful for your budget when the clinic pairs it with your proposed graft count and billing conditions. A starting figure or an average doesn't supply that personal plan.

Keep the clinic total and travel costs separate until both are known. You can then compare the complete budgets without assuming that a lower procedure price also means a lower total trip cost.

Does insurance pay for FUT?

Ask your insurer for a written coverage decision for the proposed FUT procedure before counting on reimbursement. Include the proposed clinic and technique in that request.

For payment planning, ask the clinic when each payment is due and what cancellation terms apply. If it offers financing, request the full repayment amount and terms alongside the procedure quote.

What Patients Report Paying for FUT

These dated Hair Restoration Network accounts describe individual payments. Keep their dates and stated inclusions beside the amounts when using them to prepare questions for a clinic.

Rex99, posting on 24 June 2022 about FUT with Dr. Zufelt on 17 December 2021, reported 3,412 grafts. The poster wrote that the "total operation was just under $12k."

The poster reported a $3.50-per-graft quote and 100 extra grafts free, plus an optional post-operative package they chose. They also said platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was included at surgery.

Betterhair, posting on 13 September 2023 about a third FUT procedure, wrote: "2500 grafts at $4.50 per graft." The thread names Dr. Scott Alexander in Phoenix; the price reply gives no inclusion list.

DMJr, posting on 16 May 2020, wrote that a first procedure had not gone well and the surgeon redid it at half the cost: "I only spent $5,000 this time around."

The clinic needs to confirm that in writing. ANDYMAL wrote on 10 January 2022 that the scar from an FUT procedure 18.5 years earlier was not closed and was "preventing short haircuts, or wet hair." Ask about scar-care advice and any separate charge before paying, especially if scar visibility concerns you.
