How to Book a Hair Transplant in Thailand: From First Photos to Surgery Morning

One patient booked a hair transplant in Thailand by emailing Absolute Hair Clinic in Bangkok. The surgeon replied about four days later, asked for pictures, drew a hairline on one, and guessed about 4,000 grafts.

The patient paid a $604 (฿20,000) deposit through Wise to hold a January date and booked the hotel separately.

On the day, the plan came to 4,666 grafts. (Patient account.)

That is the usual shape of booking a hair transplant in Thailand: photos, a rough estimate, a deposit, then the real plan in the clinic chair. This guide covers each step, what Thai clinics publish about deposits, and what to get in writing first.

The Booking Path in Seven Steps

  1. Send photos and your medical information to the clinic.
  2. Get a graft range and a price.
  3. Have a video call with the doctor, if the clinic offers one.
  4. Pay a deposit to hold a date.
  5. Pick a date, often months out.
  6. Get the plan, price and refund terms in writing.
  7. Book flights and a hotel, then arrive before your in-person consultation.

1. Send Photos and Your Medical History

What a Clinic Asks For

Absolute Hair Clinic's online consultation page asks for clear pictures and videos of the thinning areas and the donor area. It lists nine photo angles, from a front view to a zoomed-in 1 cm² image of the donor area for a follicular unit count. (Absolute Hair Clinic.)

It also asks for your age, nationality, medical conditions, current medications, hair loss treatments, any previous hair transplant, your goals, and when you want the procedure.

Take the donor photos as carefully as the bald spots.

Absolute says a proper donor assessment decides whether you are a good candidate at all. Patients with extensive loss who skip it may arrive with a poor donor area.

How the First Contact Goes

Patients booking a hair transplant in Thailand describe first contact by email, WhatsApp and LINE. One HairTran patient chatted on LINE with the clinic's patient consultant about grafts, placement and price. (Patient account.)

Reply speed varies a lot in patient reviews. One Absolute patient told another to "Expect very slow replies" from their surgeon. (Patient comment.)

A RealSelf reviewer who booked in Bangkok in 2019 found that brokers worked as middlemen at many of the places they contacted. They went with a clinic that answered their first email quickly and directly. (RealSelf review.)

2. Treat the Online Graft Count as a Range

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is clear on this. Any opinion given before an in-person exam is "strictly provisional" until the doctor examines you. (ISHRS guidelines.)

Patients' hair transplant numbers show why. The count moved once the doctor saw the patient in person, in every account below, in both directions.

Patient (clinic)Online estimateSet in person
HairTran, 20243,0002,600, charged about $453 (฿15,000) less
HairTran, 2024 (HRN forum)2,500"roughly 1,680" before a hairline change
Absolute, 2024about 4,0004,200 at the consult, 4,666 done
Absolute, 20252,000-2,5004,000 proposed the day before

Budget for the top of your range, and decide your ceiling before you fly.

3. Have a Video Call With the Doctor

HairTran in Bangkok offers one. A 2024 patient did a free online video consultation with Dr. Patty and her assistant that lasted 30 minutes to an hour, then paid the deposit the next day. (Patient account.)

A patient living in Canada messaged HairTran in February 2024 and had the video call about two weeks later. The patient booked a May date the same day. (HRN forum account.)

Not every surgeon does video. An Absolute patient said their surgeon worked by email or message only. (Patient comment.)

Reddit exchange from April 2024. A reader asks whether Dr. Laorong (Laorwong) does FaceTime consults and answers questions before surgery. The patient replies: not that I'm aware, you'll have to email or message him, expect very slow replies at times.
A reader asked an Absolute patient whether Dr. Laorwong does video consultations. The patient's answer, April 2024: not as far as they knew, email or message him, and expect very slow replies at times. If your surgeon works by message, send your photos and all your questions together, so one reply covers everything. (Comment on r/HairTransplants, usernames blurred.)

The ISHRS says a doctor should tell you up front how long the consultation will last and what it costs. Ask both when you request the call.

4. Pay the Deposit

What Thai Clinics Publish

Two clinics publish their terms on their own sites. Both read 5 October 2026.

Absolute also says the per-graft price may change if you move to a new date.

One 2024 Absolute patient recalled the deposit as refundable until close to the date. The clinic's page says otherwise today, so get the current terms in writing. (Patient comment.)

What Patients Report Paying

Absolute patients report a fixed baht deposit. Two paid $604 (฿20,000) through Wise in 2023-2024, and a 2025 patient was asked for $1,060 (฿35,000), the figure on the clinic's payment page now. (January 2024, October 2024, 2025.)

A HairTran patient paid a twenty-percent deposit to secure a January 2024 date. (Patient account.)

These are patient reports, so ask the clinic for its current figure.

Paying From Abroad

Patients describe Wise, cards, and cash at the clinic. One Absolute patient paid roughly half with Wise and credit cards at the pre-op consultation the evening before surgery. (Varun Priolkar's account.)

The graft count went well over the plan, and the cards were declined over and over at the balance payment. A family member's card covered the rest.

Ask your bank to raise your card limit before you fly.

Reddit exchange from June 2024. A reader asks whether the patient paid with Wise or cash. The patient replies: I paid the reservation fee with Wise, and paid the surgery, from which they deduct the reservation fee, with a Mastercard debit card.
How one Absolute patient paid for a May 2024 surgery: the deposit by Wise, the rest on a Mastercard debit card, with the deposit taken off the surgery price. Ask the clinic which payment methods it takes before you send money. (Comment on r/HairTransplants, usernames blurred.)

A HairTran patient worried about a debit card limit paid about half in cash, and said you can also pay most of it by card online before you travel. (Patient account.)

HairTran's own site says its procedures start at $3,080 (฿102,000) and it offers 0% installment plans for up to 10 months with participating credit cards. (HairTran.) Our hair transplant cost guide for Thailand compares clinic prices.

5. Pick a Date and Plan for the Wait

Popular surgeons fill up months ahead. Absolute patients report these gaps between deposit and surgery:

In 2025 one patient found Dr. Panchaprateep booked solid for six months and took another Absolute surgeon with open dates.

Smaller clinics can move faster. The RealSelf reviewer, already in Thailand, got a date about 10 days out.

6. Get These Answers in Writing Before You Pay

Thai Hair Clinic asks patients to have a consultation with its doctor and a cost estimate before they book. We'd go further and get these in one email:

Our safety guide covers how to check the doctor's credentials.

7. Book Flights, a Hotel and Entry to Thailand

How Many Days to Plan For

HairTran recommends at least two weeks in Thailand for the whole hair transplant trip, and a minimum of three days for patients short on time. (HairTran.)

Dr. Wunny, a Bangkok hair transplant clinic, publishes three trip plans: 3 days and 2 nights, 4 days and 3 nights, or 8 days and 7 nights. On the 3-day plan you fly in and go straight to surgery, which it calls "a bit intense". (Dr. Wunny.)

Absolute patients describe 5 days of aftercare included in the price, with extra days at $45 (฿1,500) each. (Patient account.)

Book your flight home only after the clinic gives you the aftercare schedule.

Where to Stay

Clinics send hotel lists, but you book yourself. One HairTran patient got recommended hotels near the clinic along with the pre-op rules. (Patient account.)

A recommended hotel is not a vetted one. An Absolute patient stayed at one the clinic recommended, and the staff tried to overcharge the patient twice. (Patient account.)

Our Thailand packages guide covers what clinics bundle with the procedure, and what that does to the total cost.

Visa and Entry

Since 15 September 2026, Thailand's 30-day visa exemption for tourism covers passport holders of 60 countries and territories. The ministry says it applies to tourism only, and other purposes "must refer to the relevant visa category". (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, read 5 October 2026.)

Check with the Thai embassy in your country which visa fits a trip for a medical procedure.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Washington adds a cash rule for the exemption. Travelers must carry $604 (฿20,000) per person or $1,210 (฿40,000) per family. (Royal Thai Embassy, Washington, read 5 October 2026.)

The Day Before and Surgery Morning

Ask the clinic when its in-person consultation happens, and land before it. The patients in these accounts arrived in Bangkok a day or more early.

Absolute patients describe the consultation the afternoon or evening before surgery: paperwork, an HIV test, and a medicated shampoo to use twice before surgery. One met the surgeon at 7 PM the day before the procedure. (Patient account, Varun Priolkar.)

HairTran patients describe the hairline drawn and the graft count set on surgery morning instead. (HRN forum account, Reddit account.)

HairTran lists its own preparation. It requires an HIV test before every procedure, asks you to stop alcohol and smoking at least 14 days before, and to wear a button-down shirt. (HairTran.)

Eat breakfast.

One HairTran patient skipped it and was told to eat before the antibiotics and blood test. (Patient account.)

What Can Change on the Day

The graft count is set in person. A 2025 Absolute patient quoted 2,000-2,500 grafts was told the day before that 4,000 was possible, at a lower price per graft. (Patient account.)

After surgery the clinic asked for payment on 4,047 grafts. The patient wrote that there was no way to consent at the time. (Same account.)

Agree on your graft ceiling before surgery starts.

Ask the clinic to write down what happens if it can do more than planned.

Compare Clinics Before You Commit

A deposit can be hard to get back, so the comparison has to happen before it, not after. Read the hair transplant reviews from Thailand, then get two or three written plans for the same photos.

You can ask us for quotes from Thai clinics. Send your photos and tell us your timeline.

Dollar figures on this page use ฿33.14 = $1, worked out from the European Central Bank euro reference rates for 22 September 2026 (฿37.988 and $1.1463 per euro).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need to Visit Thailand Before I Book?

No. Thai clinics take photos, a medical history and often a video call, then hold a date with a deposit. The ISHRS says any remote opinion stays provisional until the doctor examines you, so the final plan is set in person.

Is the Deposit Refundable?

It depends on the clinic. Absolute says its deposits are non-refundable under any circumstances. Thai Hair Clinic in Chiang Mai refunds its deposit with 15 days' notice, minus bank charges.

How Far in Advance Should I Book?

For the busiest Bangkok surgeons, patients report 4 to 8 months between deposit and surgery. A RealSelf reviewer at a smaller clinic got a date about 10 days out.

Can the Graft Number Change After I Pay the Deposit?

Yes. Patients report counts going down and up once the doctor examines them in person. Agree on a ceiling and the price per extra graft in writing.

How Many Days Before Surgery Should I Arrive?

Ask the clinic when its in-person consultation is. Absolute patients describe it the day before surgery, and HairTran patients describe it on surgery morning. HairTran recommends two weeks in Thailand for the whole trip.
