Hair Transplant Online Consultation: What a Thai Clinic Can Tell You Before You Fly

In early April 2026, a 40-year-old Australian spent about 30 minutes on a Google call with a Bangkok Hair Clinic surgeon, about three months before surgery. Posting on r/HairTransplants in July 2026, u/Cool-Paper-218 wrote that the clinic "offered a free video consultation with one of their surgeons which highly appealed to me."

Yes, you can have a hair transplant online consultation with a Thai clinic before you commit to flying. You send photos and your medical details, and you get back a graft range and technique options, sometimes on a video call with a surgeon. Not every clinic offers the call, though. Our hair transplant guide covers the wider decision about hair restoration.

What the online step can't do is fix the number. The clinic sets the final graft count when it examines you in Thailand. So treat any number from photos or a call as a range. It can move either way.

The same patient's numbers show how that works. On the call, "He predicted 2800-3300 grafts for my frontal hairline, mid scalp and crown." The patient had 2,725 grafts in July 2026.

What an Online Consultation Can Settle, and What It Can't

Having your consultation online tells you whether the trip makes sense for you. Mostly, anyway. The exact plan gets made later, at the clinic.

What you can get from photos and a call

Patients who dealt with Thai clinics remotely describe getting these:

The donor area is one reason clinics want photos. Absolute Hair Clinic says on its online-consultation page: "A proper donor area assessment is essential to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure."

What waits for the exam in Thailand

u/TomasX90 described his pre-op consultation at DHT, the day before surgery. "It took around 1hr a 15 mins."

First, "One of the doctors who work with Dr. Path went through my hair loss history, medical history, medications that I'm on and all that kind of stuff." Then his donor density was measured: "I think it was 92 or 94 per sq cm".

Next came the hairline. Dr. Path "started drawing the hairline with feedback from me, my wife, and the rest of his team."

Only after that did the count start. "Once we were settled on the hairline they started counting the number of grafts I'm gonna need."

A HairTran patient, u/blackbandana123, described a similar day on r/HairTransplants in March 2026: "They brought me in right away for HIV testing, consent forms, and pre-op photos. After that, I met Dr. Patty in person." On the hairline: "She created the initial design, then got consensus from three assistants and me".

The clinics' own pages put the number at the consultation too. DHT Clinic says: "The doctor will discuss with you for the optimal number at the time of consultation."

HairTran says: "Final costs vary based on the number of grafts required and the doctor's assessment."

Bangkok Hair Clinic's FAQ says: "During consultation, our physicians assess the donor area to determine how many grafts can be safely extracted without over-harvesting."

How a Hair Transplant Online Consultation Works

1. First contact

Patients name Messenger, WhatsApp and email as the first channel. Some clinics use others, though. Bangkok Hair Clinic lists "LINE: @bangkokhairclinic" on its home page for consultations.

DHT Clinic's home page asks for photos first: "For a rough estimation please send us your pictures in different profiles and we will get back to you as soon as we receive your photos." (read 17 October 2026)

DHI Thailand uses a form. Its Thai-language page says, in our translation: "Please fill out the form below, and we will contact you back within 24 hours to arrange a consultation for you." (read 18 October 2026)

2. Photos and your details

Bangkok Hair Clinic sent u/Cool-Paper-218 a form. "I was sent and completed a google document with required information such as medical history and sent photos of my hair for the clinic to review."

The photo and medical lists clinics use are in the next section.

3. The reply or the call

Some clinics answer by email. u/TomasX90 wrote: "Dr. Path was very specific in his emails, and he would almost always get back to me within 24 hours."

Others offer a call. u/Cool-Paper-218 spoke with the surgeon "on a google call for about 30 minutes", and "Dr Jirayu explained the process in full and asked if I had any questions."

That call is your first chance to ask about the plan. Our list of consultation questions covers what to bring to your hair transplant consultation.

4. The written summary

The Bangkok Hair Clinic patient got a Messenger summary with the schedule, the pre-op and post-op guides and the fees.

A written summary gives you something to compare against other clinics and against the plan on the day. It won't settle every detail, but it helps. So ask for the outcome in writing.

5. Deposit and the pre-trip message

Some clinics then ask for a deposit. u/Cool-Paper-218 paid one through a payment link "to secure my date", and u/blackbandana123 says HairTran wanted a deposit "To lock in the price".

Before you pay, get the deposit and refund terms in writing.

About two weeks before surgery, the Bangkok Hair Clinic patient "received a message confirming the appointment and what to avoid before the procedure, such as medications."

Follow your own surgeon's instructions on anything before surgery, and check any change to a medicine with your own doctor.

What Photos to Send, and How

Absolute Hair Clinic's nine angles

Absolute Hair Clinic publishes the most detailed photo list we found, on its online-consultation page (read 17 October 2026). It asks for these nine views:

1. "Front View - Face forward, full-frontal image." 2. "Front Tilted View - Head slightly down to reveal the hairline." 3. "Top (Vertex) View - Taken from directly above." 4. "Right Side View - Capturing temple, hairline, and sideburns." 5. "Left Side View - Similar to the right for symmetry." 6. "45-Degree Angles (Right & Left) - To capture recession patterns." 7. "Back View (Donor Area) - Clearly showing the donor region." 8. "Close-up of Hairline & Crown - To assess density and miniaturization." 9. "Donor Area Close-up - 1 cm2 zoomed-in image for follicular unit count."

Its photo rules are short. "Maintain consistent framing and angles for all photos." "Use a fixed distance (1-2 feet) for standard shots and closer for detailed graft estimation."

It also asks you to "Keep hair dry, unstyled, and clean for a true assessment of density" and to "Ensure no obstructions (hats, wet hair, or poor lighting)."

Absolute wants video as well: "please send clear pictures and videos of both your thinning or balding areas and your donor area." It says "Videos can help in evaluating scalp coverage dynamically." Not every clinic asks for video.

One practical point from us: the top and back views are much easier if someone else holds the camera. Not always possible, but it helps.

Clinics ask for different photos

Absolute lists wet hair as an obstruction. Dr. Path asked u/TomasX90 for the opposite: "He also asked me to send him pictures of wet hair and combed a certain way to give me a better assessment."

DHT's own page just asks for "pictures in different profiles" with no list.

Send or upload what your clinic asks for, in the way it asks.

Keep a few older photos on your phone too. At the in-person consult, Dr. Patty "asked to see photos of me when I was younger so she could understand my original hairline", u/blackbandana123 wrote.

The medical details clinics ask for

Absolute's page asks for your age, gender, nationality, medical conditions and current medications. It also asks for any hair-loss treatments, whether a medicine is oral or topical, and how long you have used it.

For any previous transplant, it wants the "number of grafts" and "technique used", plus the "date of the procedure". It ends with your goals and "When are you looking to undergo the procedure?"

Answer these fully. Your own doctor is the person to ask about any treatment you use.

Why the Remote Graft Estimate Can Change

Photos to call, call to surgery day

u/TipKind3110's range moved. "Initially, based on photos, she estimated about 2,500 - 3,000 grafts. However, after our recent call and a more detailed assessment, the estimate has been bumped up to 3,000 - 3,500 grafts."

A reply under that post, from u/Immediate_Garden_716, says: "your final in person pre op assessment will reveal how many grafts in the end."

The Bangkok Hair Clinic patient moved the other way. The call estimate was 2,800 to 3,300 grafts, and the count on the day was 2,725.

Under u/blackbandana123's post, u/Ok_Doughnut641 guessed that photos can hide thinning: "I was surprised to read you needed 3553 grafts honestly, I'd have estimated 2500 or so, but I guess your mid front section was thinner in reality than it looks from the pictures."

In-person estimates can land close together. Not always, though. u/Carl_lfc wrote on r/HairTransplants in July 2024: "I went to see 3 doctors in Bangkok about hair transplants they was all very similar with the amount of hair needed 2100-2700 plantations FUE."

Ask the clinic what happens to the price and the date if the count changes on the day.

How long Thai clinics say to stay

DHT Clinic puts the in-person consultation at the start of the trip. "You need to stay in Thailand at least 3-4 days. Day 1 for consultation Day 2 for surgery Day 3 for follow up or you may depart back to your country".

HairTran's home page says: "For international patients, we recommend allowing at least two weeks for your entire hair transplant journey." For people short on time, "at a minimum of three days is advised to ensure adequate rest before traveling back home." (read 17 October 2026)

What Thai Clinics Publish About Online Consultations

We compare what clinics publish about online and virtual consultations on their own sites. We haven't visited these clinics.

ClinicWhat its own page saysWhat patients report
Absolute Hair Clinic (Bangkok)An online-consultation page: send photos, videos and your details "To provide you with an accurate assessment and estimate". It doesn't say a doctor calls youNone cited
Bangkok Hair Clinic"Bangkok Hair Clinic offers free consultations for scalp examinations, analysis, and diagnosis to determine appropriate treatment." No mention of video or online consults. Contact by LINE, phone or emailA free video consultation with a surgeon, about 30 minutes, April 2026
DHT ClinicSend photos "For a rough estimation". Consultation is Day 1 in Thailand. No video call publishedRemote consult with Dr. Path by email and photos, November 2024 post
HairTran (Dr. Patty)"Book a Free Consultation" buttons. Its published video call is for patients abroad after surgeryA "virtual consultation", an "online consultation", a photo estimate then a call
Hairsmith (Bangkok)"BOOK APPOINTMENT / FREE CONSULT" and a free consultation with Dr Prima Tossaborvorn. No online or video consult publishedNone found
DHI Thailand (Bangkok)A form, with a callback "within 24 hours to arrange a consultation" (our translation from Thai). It doesn't say the consultation is onlineNone found

Clinic pages read 17 October 2026, except DHI Thailand's Thai page, read 18 October 2026.

HairTran's page is easy to misread. Its published video call sits under "We'll Care for You, Even When You're Abroad", for after surgery. The pre-booking online consults come from patients.

u/justmirinyou wrote on r/HairTransplants in October 2025: "Contacted Hairtran Clinic in December 2024, had a virtual consultation in January 2025, and scheduled operation for June 2025."

u/Chika4a said of Dr. Patty in a November 2024 comment: "She was very professional and very friendly during the online consultation and on the HT day."

u/Cool-Paper-218 said the video call "was never offered by any other clinic during my initial conversations with them on messaging platforms (Messenger and WhatsApp)." Bangkok Hair Clinic did offer one, though.

Who reviews your photos

None of the clinic pages we read says whether a physician or a coordinator looks at photos sent before booking. Absolute names no reviewer, DHT says "we will get back to you", and DHI Thailand says it will contact you.

HairTran names doctors only for its after-surgery channel, where "you can send photos of your transplanted area for our doctors to review and track your progress."

Patients name a surgeon in three cases: Dr. Path by email, Dr Jirayu Jatechayanon on a video call, and Dr. Patty. In one rejection, the patient says the answer came as "a message from Dr. Patty's office", which doesn't say who wrote it.

So ask the clinic two key questions: who will look at my photos, and will I speak to the surgeon who would operate on me? Our page on who performs hair transplant surgery covers the roles on surgery day.

Prices You May Hear on the Call

One r/tressless poster put the worry this way in a September 2026 post: "a price range I should mentally prepare for, I really wanna know before I start booking consultations."

HairTran publishes a starting point. Its home page FAQ says "Procedures at Hairtran Clinic start at 102,000 THB" ($3,080), and its FAQ page prices non-shaven FUE at 100 THB per graft ($3.02) (read 17 October 2026).

The Bangkok Hair Clinic patient shared the quote that followed the April 2026 video call: "Fee was 129,000THB for first 1500 grafts and additional 75THB per graft". That is ฿129,000 ($3,890) for the first 1,500, then ฿75 ($2.26) a graft, one patient's quote.

Both prices hang on the graft count. Mostly, anyway. So a count that changes on the day, as covered above, changes the price too.

Whether the consultation itself costs anything is a separate question. Our page on the free hair transplant consultation covers it.

Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).

From First Message to Flight

The online step exists for fears like this one, from u/Plastic_Sun_6789 under u/justmirinyou's post in March 2026: "I'm just so scared to go all the way to Thailand being from the states just in case "something goes wrong""

Patients' own timelines show how far ahead the online step happens:

Popular surgeons book out. Not all of them, and not always. u/zonker00 wrote under u/blackbandana123's post: "I have been told she needs 6 months advance booking". So if you want a named surgeon, ask about dates early.

That pressure shaped one patient's choice. u/Cool-Paper-218 said the better-known clinics "were booked out far in advance", with "weeks of delayed responses and varying opinions on what would suit me based on photos alone."

Communication decided it for another. u/blackbandana123 chose Dr. Patty "because of her clinic results and mainly because of responsive and thorough in communication".

When an online consultation says no

A remote "no" can save you a flight. It isn't always the last word, though. u/Standard-Yesterday60 posted on r/HairTransplants in April 2025: "I got a message from Dr. Patty's office yesterday stating they had determined I was not a good candidate for FUE because of insufficient donor hair and the severity of my hair loss."

The same patient added: "This was the first time I've been told this after speaking to a few other facilities over seas as well as doing an online virtual consult with Bosley here in the US."

Answers can also change over time. u/Mephas1 replied: "Dr Patty also rejected me in the beginning. After taking meds and getting regrowth she was willing to take me as a patient. But in the end I chose a different clinic."

That is one patient's history. Whether any treatment suits you is a question for your own doctor.

If online opinions disagree, a second clinic's view helps. Our page on how many consultations to have covers comparing them.

Warning Signs Before You Pay a Deposit

Before booking, u/Cool-Paper-218 named "weeks of delayed responses and varying opinions on what would suit me based on photos alone."

The same patient noticed which clinics never offered a live call. If you want to speak to a surgeon before you pay, ask for it, and note who says yes.

Check the doctor yourself too. The Medical Council of Thailand's register lets you search a licensed doctor by first name and surname, in Thai or English.

After You Book: Follow-Up From Home

At some clinics, the same remote channel can carry your recovery. HairTran describes "our dedicated online follow-up system for international patients", and says "we can arrange a video call with your doctor to address your concerns directly."

A HairTran patient wrote on r/HairTransplants in April 2023: "You don't even really have to do an in person follow up, just send pics. Ofc in person is better if you can."

For care after surgery, follow your own surgeon's instructions and ask your own doctor about anything that worries you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a hair transplant in Thailand without visiting first?

Yes. Patients have booked Bangkok Hair Clinic, HairTran and DHT Clinic after an online consultation, sometimes with a video call or emails with the surgeon. Some then paid a deposit to hold a date. Not every clinic works this way, though.

The clinic still examines you in Thailand before surgery, and that exam sets the plan.

Will the graft number from my photos be the final number?

No. A remote number is a working estimate. It can still land close. One HairTran patient's range rose from 2,500 to 3,000 grafts to 3,000 to 3,500 after a call.

A Bangkok Hair Clinic patient was quoted 2,800 to 3,300 and had 2,725. One DHT patient describes the count being made after donor density is measured and the hairline is drawn.

What photos should I send for an online consultation?

Send what your clinic asks for. Absolute Hair Clinic publishes nine views: front, front tilted, top, both sides, both 45-degree angles, the back, close-ups of hairline and crown, and a 1 cm2 donor close-up.

It wants dry, clean, unstyled hair. Dr. Path at DHT asked one patient for wet, combed photos instead. So it varies by clinic.

Who looks at my photos?

The clinic pages we read don't say. Patients report a surgeon replying in three cases, by email, on a video call and through a clinic estimate.

One patient's rejection came as "a message from Dr. Patty's office". Ask the clinic who will review your photos and whether you'll speak to the surgeon who would operate.

What if an online consultation says I'm not a candidate?

Take it seriously, because donor hair limits what any surgeon can do. It isn't always final, though. One patient told no by HairTran had not been told this by other clinics, so a second opinion can help you weigh it.

Another was accepted later after their hair changed. Ask your own doctor about your options before you plan anything.

How far ahead should I have the online consultation?

Patients who posted their timelines left about three to five months between the online step and surgery. Yours may differ. One patient was told a popular surgeon needed six months of advance booking. If you have fixed leave dates, start early and ask each clinic for its next available date.
