Hair Transplant Video: Can You Get Footage of Your Own Procedure?
A patient who had an FUE hair transplant with Dr. Ratchathorn at Absolute Hair Clinic in Bangkok in May 2026 wrote that they "could not see through the whole procedure because they had my eyes loosely covered." One record they could get was photos: "All the photos they take throughout the process can be made available to you on Google Drive if you ask" (r/HairTransplants, 15 June 2026).
None of the Thai clinic pages we read says it films the full procedure and gives the patient the footage. A clinic may still agree if you ask. What you can ask for is a written record of the day, the graft count and dated photos.
What You Can Usually Get: Notes, a Graft Count and Photos
In the patient accounts we read, nobody describes being handed a video of their own surgery. In the accounts we read from patients at Thai clinics, the video they mention is a consultation call before the trip.
What patients keep is the graft count the clinic stated, their own photos and the clinic's photos. Written notes from the day, with a graft breakdown, add to that record when a clinic provides them.
Most people searching "hair transplant video" want to see what the operation looks like. A brief outline is below, and the step-by-step account of the day is on our hair transplant procedure page.
The Four Things "Hair Transplant Video" Can Mean
Clinics and patients use the word for four different things. Only one of them is a recording of your own surgery.
A Video Consultation Before Surgery
This is the video that comes up in the threads we read about Thai clinics. One poster wrote: "Bangkok Hair Clinic (BHC) was one of the clinics I contacted, however the difference was that they offered a free video consultation with one of their surgeons which highly appealed to me" (r/HairTransplants, 22 July 2026).
Another patient wrote: "Had a video consultation with Dr Patty in January where she estimated approximately 2500 grafts" (r/HairTransplants, 9 April 2024). Their post title gives 2,980 grafts for the procedure itself.
The call is for planning. It doesn't record what was done on the day.
Footage of the Surgery Itself
None of the pages we read from HairTran, Bangkok Hair Clinic or DHI Thailand says the clinic records your procedure and gives you a copy.
Public video of surgery in Thailand does exist. One r/HairTransplants poster described a YouTuber's review of a HairTran procedure as having "Lots of surgery footage" (r/HairTransplants, 22 April 2024).
That video was published by the YouTuber. It tells you little about whether the clinic films other patients. Some clinics might, so ask.
Clinic Case Studies and Marketing Videos
HairTran publishes a case-study video with this note under it: "The video above features an individual case study. Results vary from person to person and are not guaranteed, as they depend on several factors, including overall health, age, aftercare routine, and the underlying cause of hair loss" (HairTran).
These videos show another patient's results, picked by the clinic. How to check them is covered in our guide to verifying before-and-after photos and testimonials.
A Later Comb-Through Video
Months later, a video of the grown hair being combed through is another kind of record. A Turkish clinic, Diamond Hair Clinic, writes that "A later comb through density video can add context when it shows movement, lighting, and the donor area."
What a Procedure Video Would Show, Stage by Stage
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) says FUE "varies from surgeon to surgeon in terms of setup, execution, sequence, instrumentation, staffing, anesthesia, etc." So your clinic's order may differ from the one below.
Anesthesia and Preparation
The day starts with outlining the donor and recipient areas, including the hairline design, according to the ISHRS. HairTran's FUE page says "Photos will be taken before and after the hairline is drawn" (HairTran).
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says "Most patients remain awake during the entire surgery and need only an anesthesia that makes the scalp numb. Some patients also take a mild sedative to help them relax."
A recording of this stage would show the numbing injections being given into the scalp.
Donor Area: Trimming and Extraction
FUE involves removing "individual follicular units (natural clusters of hairs grouped in 1-4 hairs each)" from the back of the head, using "micro punches that span from 0.7 to 1.2 mm in size," the ISHRS says. It adds that "some surgeons prefer to harvest the grafts first."
On a shaven procedure, a video would show the donor hair clipped short before extraction starts.
Recipient Site Creation
The grafts go into small incisions made in the thinning area. One HairTran patient described the order of their day: "first lying on the back while Dr Patty makes the incisions on the front, followed by lying on the tummy for extractions and finally back on the back for implantation" (r/HairTransplants, 9 April 2024).
Implantation
The ISHRS lists placing the grafts as a step done "most often by the trained staff." A recording of this step shows the tool used to set the follicles in place, such as tweezers or an implanter pen.
End of the Day
Bangkok Hair Clinic says its shaven FUE procedure "typically takes 6-8 hours, depending on scalp condition, individual difficulty, and the number of grafts," with "a 15-30 minute break for lunch" (Bangkok Hair Clinic, read 27 Sep 2026). That figure is Bangkok Hair Clinic's own.
A full recording of a day that long would run for hours.
You May Not See the Work Yourself
Two of the patients at Thai clinics whose accounts we read didn't watch their own surgery. The Absolute patient had their eyes covered, and the HairTran patient above wrote: "Fell asleep for most of the extraction and implantation."
So your memory can be a weak record of the day. The Absolute patient used their phone for the part they could catch: "I pulled out my phone and voice-recorded the nurse giving me the instructions because I was still a little fuzzy, and I did not trust my memory to remember what she was saying."
They recorded the instructions only.
Filming Your Own Procedure
One patient on r/HairTransplants did film part of their own procedure. They wrote: "Yesterday had the opp and I took some selfie footage and it looks distinctly to me like I was given FUE implantation - not DHI like I'd requested" (r/HairTransplants, 22 February 2025).
The post names neither the clinic nor the country. They asked, "Is there anyone here that could review the little footage I have and confirm?" and added, "In all instances tweezers are being used for placing follicles."
The replies disagreed about what counts as DHI, and the short clips couldn't settle it. Phone clips like this cover fragments of the day.
Ask Before the Day
No clinic page or patient account we read says whether a Thai clinic lets a patient or a companion film. So treat it as a question for the clinic, well before the day.
Ask the clinic in writing, before you travel, whether you or a companion may film.
If filming is allowed, keep it to your own scalp. Other patients and staff should stay out of the recording unless they've agreed to be in it.
What Useful Footage Would Show, and What It Can't Prove
Who Makes the Incisions
The ABHRS, which certifies hair restoration surgeons, sets an ethics standard for its members on this step. Creating the extraction incisions "is a non-delegable act," and "the creation of incisions for placement of grafts is also non-delegable" (ABHRS).
The same page also allows extraction incisions by another licensed medical practitioner where local rules permit, so what a recording can check is whether a doctor made them. It's an ethics standard for ABHRS members, separate from Thai law.
Who Places the Grafts
The ISHRS describes graft placement as done "most often by the trained staff." Seeing technicians do this step on a recording isn't a warning sign by itself.
What matters is whether you were told. An ISHRS patient alert reproduced on the ABHRS site lists "Lack of Informed Consent. Non-physicians participating in hair restoration procedures without the patient's informed consent."
A recording also lets you compare the day with what a clinic says about itself. HairTran says "all critical steps will be performed by Dr Pukpinya Jangjetriew and assisted by her nurses and technicians" (HairTran).
Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai about page says, translated from Thai: "In the hair transplant procedure for every case, there will be two doctors who will look after and personally perform the procedure" (Bangkok Hair Clinic, read 18 Oct 2026).
Our page on who performs hair transplant surgery covers the roles in full. The question to put to any clinic is: "Which steps will the surgeon do, and which will staff do?"
The Technique You Were Sold
Footage can show the placement tool, which is how the patient above tried to check whether they got the DHI they asked for. Their replies still disagreed about what DHI means.
So agree on the method and the tool in writing before the day. Footage is only useful against something written down.
What Footage Can't Prove: the Exact Graft Count
Diamond Hair Clinic's guide says: "You cannot reliably prove the exact graft count from mirror photos, scabs, dot counting apps, or early density after surgery."
Patients who try to read the count from images get wide guesses. One poster wrote, "I was told that 3,000 grafts were implanted. What do you think?" and replies ranged from about 1,500 to more than 3,500 (r/HairTransplants, 6 October 2026).
One reply in that thread gave practical advice: "what you can do: ask the clinic for graft breakdown. maybe do an AI assisted count. and hold the clinic reliable."
The Graft Count: the Number That Matters Most
What a Graft Count Means
A graft is one follicular unit, which the ISHRS describes as a natural cluster of 1-4 hairs. So 2,000 grafts does not mean 2,000 hairs, and a count should never mix the two words.
For scale, the 2025 ISHRS Practice Census reports an average of 2,347 grafts in a first procedure and 1,637 in a later one, from 173 answers. The census invited 992 members and got 247 responses (26%), with a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4% at the 95% confidence level, covering 2024.
Why a Number Alone Isn't Proof
A count on a sheet tells you what the clinic says it did. One commenter on r/Hairtransplant wrote that their surgeon "provided an OR report with a detailed breakdown of the grafts and their composition."
They added: "How to know for sure it's accurate? I think you have to place a bit of trust with the doctor" (r/Hairtransplant, 4 October 2019).
That trust is easier to give when the number is broken down. A breakdown by zone gives a later surgeon something to check against your scalp.
What You Can Check Around the Number
Diamond Hair Clinic's guide says what you can verify is "the process around the number, including whether the area was measured, whether the donor area was assessed, whether the planned density made sense, whether harvested and placed grafts were documented, and whether the surgeon remains accountable afterward."
Laid out in order, that gives you three points to check:
- Before surgery: was the area measured, was the donor area assessed, and did the planned density make sense?
- On the day: were harvested and placed grafts written down?
- Afterward: does the surgeon stay accountable at follow-up?
The Operation Report: What It Should Contain
Hair Transplant Source, an industry site, describes a full operation sheet: "The op sheet records extracted, transected, discarded and placed totals by zone, plus the hairs-per-graft ratio, and a photograph of the final tray map is appended" (Hair Transplant Source).
Here is what to ask your clinic's notes to show, and what each item tells a doctor who sees you later.
| Ask the record to show | What it tells a later doctor |
|---|---|
| Graft breakdown by zone: extracted, transected (cut through), discarded and placed, plus hairs per graft | How many grafts went where, and how many were lost along the way |
| Treated zones and the donor area used | Where hair was taken from and where it went |
| Surgical roles | Who made the incisions and who placed the grafts |
| Anesthesia and medicines given on the day, and any reaction | What you had, in the clinic's own words |
| Dated photos from fixed angles | What the scalp looked like before and after |
| A photo of the final tray map | The grafts sorted on the tray, as a picture |
Clinics differ on what they write down. So ask the clinic what its notes cover, and get a copy before you fly home. A clinic may offer to send it later, but don't rely on that.
Photos: the Record You Can Keep
Photos Show the Change Over Months
HairTran's Thai homepage says, translated from Thai, that foreign patients "can send photos of the transplanted area to us for an initial check" (HairTran).
Bangkok Hair Clinic offers remote follow-up at set points, shown in the table below. A dated photo set shows the change over months, which a recording of one day can't. Both help, if you can get both.
What Thai Clinics Say They Photograph
We compare what clinics publish and what patients report about them. We haven't visited these clinics.
| Clinic | What is published or reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute Hair Clinic, Bangkok | Photos taken throughout the process "can be made available to you on Google Drive if you ask" | Patient account, r/HairTransplants, 15 June 2026 |
| HairTran, Bangkok (English site) | "We take high-resolution photos to create a clear baseline for tracking your progress over time." At 12 months: "Final assessment with your doctor, comparing before-and-after photos and discussing future care plans." | HairTran, read 18 Oct 2026 |
| HairTran, Bangkok (Thai site) | Translated from Thai: "When the customer arrives, the medical assistant will record images of you, in order to track the changes in your hair in each period." | HairTran |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Translated from Thai: follow-up "whether by coming in for an examination at the clinic or through remote consultation, at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months" | Bangkok Hair Clinic, read 18 Oct 2026 |
What Good Photos Look Like
The clinic's set may not match the angles you need later. So keep your own set alongside the clinic's. Use the same angles, the same room and the same light each time, and keep the date on every file.
Include the front, top, crown and donor area. Your doctor may ask for more.
How to Use the Record Later
For a Revision Consult
Hair Transplant Source calls its kind of op sheet "the graft count verification that survives a complaint, a revision consult three years later, or a regulator's question." A surgeon assessing a second procedure can start from your notes instead of guessing.
Some clinics publish what they do if growth falls short. Hairsmith says: "After one year, if there are areas where the hair hasn't grown well or hasn't grown at all, we will do a free touch-up without any extra charges" (Hairsmith, read 27 Sep 2026).
Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai about page says, translated from Thai: "we also guarantee the result in the case where the hair does not grow after the transplant; we are happy to transplant again for you at no cost" (Bangkok Hair Clinic, read 18 Oct 2026).
These are each clinic's own words. Dated photos can show where growth fell short.
For a Complaint
We can't give legal advice on a dispute. What we can point to is the text of the law the Medical Council of Thailand publishes.
Under Section 32 in the Medical Council of Thailand's English text of the Act, anyone may file an ethics complaint with the Council within one year of learning of the act and who did it, and no later than three years after it. Under Section 39, the outcome can be dismissal, a warning, a reprimand, a license suspension of up to two years, or revocation.
The Council's doctor register lets you look a doctor up by name.
A written record doesn't decide a complaint. It lets you say who did what, and when.
The Record Changes the Strength of a Second Opinion
A second surgeon can do more with full notes and dated photos than with a count alone. With only a number, they're left estimating from your scalp. That can still work, but it's less precise.
If the clinic gave you no video and no report, gather what exists before judging anything: the count the clinic stated, the clinic's photos, your own photos and any follow-up notes. Then ask the clinic in writing for whatever is missing.
What to Ask the Clinic Before You Go
Put these to the clinic before you pay a deposit, and keep the answers in writing. More questions are in our consultation questions guide.
- Will you give me written notes with the graft count, broken down by area?
- Which photos do you take, and how will I receive them?
- Do you film the procedure, and can I have a copy? May I or a companion film?
- Which steps will the surgeon do, and which will staff do?
- What happens if the hair doesn't grow in an area?
If you have questions, you can contact us.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a video of my own hair transplant?
Don't count on it. Some clinics may say yes. None of the Thai clinic pages we read says it films the full procedure and gives patients the footage, and none of the patient accounts we read describes receiving one.
Ask the clinic directly before you book.
What if the clinic doesn't offer video?
If there's no video, ask for the graft count, the clinic's photos and written notes from the day, and keep your own dated photos.
Can I film my own procedure on my phone?
One r/HairTransplants poster took "selfie footage" of their own procedure in 2025 and used it to question whether they got DHI. The clips were short, and the replies disagreed about what they showed. No clinic page we read says whether filming is allowed, so ask in writing before the day and keep other patients out of frame.
How do I verify my graft count?
You can't reliably prove the exact number from photos after surgery, as Diamond Hair Clinic's guide notes. Check the process instead: was the area measured, was the donor area assessed, and were harvested and placed grafts written down? Ask for totals by zone, from extraction to placement, including discards.
Is a photo record enough?
Photos plus the graft count the clinic stated is the record the patients we read about keep. Photos can't prove every graft.
Dated photos from fixed angles do show how the result developed. Add written notes if the clinic will provide them.
What is a hair transplant video consultation?
It's a video call with the surgeon or clinic before you travel. One patient describes Bangkok Hair Clinic offering a free one, and another describes Dr Patty at HairTran estimating a graft number on one.
It plans the work. It doesn't record what was done on the day.
