Free Hair Transplant Consultation in Thailand: What to Expect
RealSelf reviewer Adventurous172643 sent photos by email before visiting Absolute Hair Clinic. In a January 2025 account, they wrote: *"During the consultation I met Dr Laerowong in person."*
Our hair transplant guide covers the wider decision. A free hair transplant consultation is common among the Thai clinics we checked, but some appointments carry a fee that may be credited toward surgery. Confirm the charge for your chosen format before booking.
Before you pay anything, establish what the payment covers and what happens if you decide against treatment.
The short answer: free consultations are common, but confirm the fee
You can start assessing Thailand options from home. Clinics publish photo reviews and video appointments, sometimes called a virtual consultation, but the word "consultation" doesn't tell you whether you're booking an initial estimate or an examination with a doctor.
The fee can change with the format. A clinic may advertise a free online review and charge for the in-person appointment, or offer the opposite arrangement.
A paid consultation may come with a treatment credit. Ask for the condition in writing, including any deadline, before treating that fee as money you'll get back.
Free versus paid: how Thai clinics actually handle the consultation
Clinics that advertise a free consultation
We compare what clinics publish and haven't visited them. Match the published offer to the appointment you intend to book.
| Clinic and source | Published consultation offer | What to confirm | Source date |
|---|---|---|---|
| HE Clinic | Free in-person consultation. WhatsApp consultation with a doctor costs THB 1,000, deducted from treatment if you visit within six months. | Which format you're booking and how the credit applies to your treatment. | read 18 October 2026 |
| HairTran | Complimentary assessment, with consultations by Zoom only. | Who will review your case and what to send before the call. | read 18 October 2026 |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Free online consultation. In-person consultation costs THB 500, payable at the clinic. | Whether any investigations carry a separate charge. | read 21 October 2026 |
| Absolute Hair Clinic | Free online consultation using pictures for assessment and graft estimation. | Whether you will receive a written response or have a call. | read 18 October 2026 |
| Hairsmith | A "FREE CONSULT" booking button. | The format, reviewer, and scope of that appointment. | read 18 October 2026 |
A booking button gives you less detail than a page that separates online and in-person appointments. So if the format isn't stated, get that answer before selecting a time or making travel arrangements.
The small fee that is credited to the procedure
A treatment credit reduces a later treatment bill when you meet the stated conditions. Don't assume it means a cash refund if you choose another clinic or decide against surgery.
The six-month condition in the table matters if you're still comparing clinics. Confirm what happens if you postpone travel or the doctor advises against a transplant.
Free remote consultation versus a paid face-to-face one
Ask about both appointments if you expect to start online and visit later. A free remote review doesn't tell you whether the later examination or any tests are included.
Before paying for an in-person slot, establish what it covers. You need to know whether you'll meet the doctor, have your scalp examined, discuss a treatment plan, and receive a price estimate.
Before you book flights: use the remote consultation as a travel gate
Use a hair transplant online consultation to decide whether you have enough information to plan a trip. Hair transplant consultations can start remotely, but the useful result is a preliminary plan you can compare, with a clear explanation of what the surgeon will still check in Thailand.
Send the photos and background the clinic requests
Absolute Hair Clinic requests clear photos and videos of the thinning areas and donor area, where hair would be taken for the transplant. Its requested views include the front, tilted front, top, both sides, 45-degree angles, and back.
It also requests hairline and crown close-ups, plus a close-up of a 1 cm2 donor area. So follow the clinic's photo instructions instead of assuming a single front-facing picture is enough.
The same form asks about your health and any previous transplants. Include your medical history and current medication. State what you want to achieve and when you hope to have treatment.
Send the same background when comparing clinics. If one surgeon sees your previous procedure history and another doesn't, you aren't asking them to assess the same information.
Get a useful preliminary plan in writing
Ask who reviewed the photos and whether you can discuss the recommendation with the surgeon. A photo submission and a scheduled video call are different formats, so confirm which one the clinic is offering.
Request a provisional graft range, the proposed technique, and the basis for the price. Also establish the next available consultation and procedure appointments before planning dates around an estimate.
Keep the written replies so you can compare the proposed treatment areas and what each price includes. Our hair transplant consultation questions cover the fuller discussion to have with the surgeon.
Confirm what happens after you arrive
BLS Hair Center describes a video consultation directly with the surgeon, followed by a detailed in-person evaluation after arrival in Thailand. That gives you a practical point to clarify with any clinic: when will the physical examination happen relative to surgery?
Ask which decisions remain open until that examination. The preliminary graft count might change after the in-person examination.
Get the in-person assessment arrangements in writing before you book flights.
If you don't know who assessed your case or what the quoted price assumes, request a clearer reply first. Having an available surgery date doesn't resolve those questions.
What the consultation includes, so you know what you are paying for
A candidacy check and a thorough scalp and donor exam
The American Academy of Dermatology says a consultation includes a thorough scalp examination. You may also need a blood test or a scalp biopsy, a small tissue sample, to find out why you have hair loss.
This helps establish whether a transplant is appropriate. Ask whether any proposed tests are part of the consultation charge or billed separately.
Bangkok Hair Clinic says its physicians assess the donor area to work out how many grafts can be extracted safely without taking too much hair. A graft is a small unit of hair-bearing tissue used in the transplant.
The assessment needs to consider what you can supply as well as what you want filled. Our guide to hair transplant candidacy explains that decision in more detail.
A graft-count estimate and a hairline design
A Hairsmith patient on RealSelf wrote that their graft count was calculated from the area they wanted filled and their desired hairline position. That makes the treatment area part of the price discussion from the start, whether you are considering FUE hair transplantation or another approach.
Ask the surgeon to explain where the proposed grafts would go. So an estimate for the hairline alone won't answer your budget question if you also want the crown addressed.
Bangkok Hair Clinic says its in-person assessment may include hairline design where relevant. Confirm when you'll discuss the design rather than assuming an emailed graft estimate settles it.
Our guide to how many grafts you may need gives you background for that conversation. The count for your case still needs the surgeon's assessment.
A discussion of technique, expected results, and risks
Suitability, technique, and graft count are part of the doctor assessment described by Dr. PAUL Hair Clinic, along with a treatment plan and cost details (translated from Thai). Ask the doctor why the proposed method fits your case.
HE Clinic says its doctor explains the risks for each patient during consultation. Bring up anything in the recommendation you don't understand before agreeing to treatment.
The American Academy of Dermatology says expected results can be discussed after examination and any necessary tests. Use that discussion to establish what the proposed treatment could achieve in the areas that concern you.
A cost estimate or quote
Ask for the proposed graft count and price together, in writing. The estimate should identify the treatment area and method so you can see what the total buys.
If the reply is preliminary, ask what could change after the physical examination. Get the clinic to explain how it would price a different graft count or revised plan before you pay a procedure deposit.
Questions to ask before you book
Is the consultation free, and is any fee credited to the procedure?
Put the format in the question: "Is this online or in-person appointment free, and if there's a fee, what are the conditions for crediting it toward treatment?" Ask for the answer in the appointment confirmation so you can refer back to it.
What format will it take, and how far ahead do I book?
HairTran says consultations are Zoom-only, it doesn't accept walk-ins, and patients should book at least four weeks ahead (read 18 October 2026). So don't plan to arrive at that clinic for an unscheduled consultation.
For any clinic, establish consultation availability separately from the procedure date. If you're traveling from overseas, confirm the time zone for a video appointment too.
What is included in the price, and what is extra?
Ask whether the consultation charge covers the examination and written plan, and how any investigations are charged. Then request a separate breakdown of the procedure quote, including medication and follow-up appointments.
Keep those replies with the estimate. If something you expect isn't listed, have the clinic add its answer before you make a payment.
Confirm before booking: what the deposit covers
Ask whether the deposit reserves surgery or covers a consultation
When a clinic describes a deposit as reserving surgery, that payment serves the booking. The word "deposit" alone doesn't tell you whether it also covers a consultation.
A DHT patient on r/HairTransplants described a deposit to schedule their procedure and an in-clinic meeting before surgery. Ask for that distinction in your own payment instructions.
Confirm what the payment reserves, whether it comes off the treatment bill, and the refund terms. Also ask what happens to it if the surgeon changes the plan or advises against surgery after examining you.
Cost varies by surgeon, so confirm it with the clinic
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery says the cost of FUE varies with the surgeon's experience and clinical practice. It advises patients to consult a surgeon to establish their own cost.
Another patient's payment arrangement can help you spot something to ask about. So get the terms of your own appointment directly from the clinic.
What a hair transplant costs in Thailand, for context
Per-graft and package prices
Hairsmith publishes THB 80 per graft for standard follicular unit excision, or FUE, with a 1,000-graft minimum. Its page labels this 2025 pricing (read 18 October 2026).
A per-graft quote needs a graft count before you can compare totals. For a package, ask which graft count and treatment scope it covers, then compare those details with the other clinic's estimate.
A consultation gives you the opportunity to establish those assumptions before committing to surgery. Keep the consultation charge separate from the procedure total when you compare replies, and before you commit to a hair transplant operation.
Why the price varies
The proposed graft count affects a quote priced per graft. If clinics recommend different treatment areas or counts, ask each surgeon to explain the difference before choosing by total price.
The method belongs in the written estimate too. If you specifically want a no-shave procedure, have the clinic state whether the proposed plan includes it and what remains subject to examination.
What patients say about the consultation in Thailand
A reviewer on RealSelf, writing in September 2020, described consulting with Hairsmith by email before visiting. They said their final total matched the email quote and reported no extra medication costs.
Ask for that level of detail in your own estimate: which treatment is proposed and which items the quoted total covers. Confirm how a change in the plan would affect the bill.
In a November 2025 account, B-suke wrote that Hairsmith gives an estimated number of grafts after you send photos, and that a rough estimate regarding the cost is also possible. In-person counseling and an estimate through LINE followed.
If your reply is a rough estimate, ask when you'll receive the more detailed one. That lets you plan the visit around the assessment rather than expecting every decision to be finished by email.
Another Hairsmith reviewer on RealSelf wrote: *"The consultation was informative and honest. There was no pushing either."* Ask for time to review the recommendation if you're still deciding.
Take the next step: book your consultation
Choose the appointment format and get its fee and any credit conditions confirmed in writing. Include the photos and background the clinic requests, then establish what you'll discuss with the surgeon in person.
If a reply leaves you unsure what to ask next, you can share your consultation questions with us. Include the proposed appointment format and the part of the estimate you want explained.
Frequently asked questions
Is the in-person consultation free, or do I pay before deciding?
Free options are common among the Thai clinics we checked, but an in-person appointment can carry a fee even when the online review is free. A free hair consultation may be a remote review rather than a doctor examination.
Confirm the charge before booking and ask what the appointment includes. If the fee is credited toward surgery, get the condition in writing rather than assuming it's refundable when you decline treatment.
Can I get a quote before I travel to Thailand?
Yes, a remote review can provide a preliminary estimate. Absolute Hair Clinic requests photos and case details for assessment and graft estimation. Ask which parts of the plan and price the surgeon will reconfirm in person, and when that examination will happen.
Does a deposit mean I paid for the consultation?
Ask what the payment covers. A procedure reservation and a consultation charge are separate items to clarify, even if the clinic combines them in one payment request. Get the amount, treatment credit, and refund conditions in writing before paying, including what happens if the plan changes after examination.
How far ahead should I book the consultation?
Ask the clinic for its next consultation slot and its procedure availability separately. A patient's reported surgery wait doesn't establish how soon you can speak with the surgeon. Confirm the appointment format and any photo requirements before arranging travel around it.
What if the surgeon changes the plan after seeing me?
Ask what the examination changed, why a different plan is recommended, and how it affects the price. If you requested no-shave work or a particular treatment area, have the surgeon explain whether that is still appropriate. Before traveling, establish when this discussion will happen and how much time you'll have to consider a revised recommendation before treatment.
