How many surgeons should I consult before deciding on a hair transplant in Thailand?
Reddit user u/Carl_lfc was planning a hair transplant and consulted three Bangkok doctors. Their estimates were close, but u/Carl_lfc left asking: "I'm stuck on which one to choose now."
We recommend starting with two to five Thailand surgeons or clinics, then adding another opinion if important differences remain unexplained. Virtual consultations let you compare plans and prices before flying, so you can do that research from home.
The short answer: a handful, not one
Treat two to five as our suggested starting range. You don't need to collect five opinions if the earlier consultations have made the choices clear, and you shouldn't stop at five with a major disagreement unresolved.
Count the clinical opinions you can compare. Sending photos to several reception teams gives you contacts, but you still need to establish who assessed your case and what they recommend.
Hair Transplant Mentor says there is nothing unusual about speaking with more than one surgeon before making a permanent surgical decision. We would use those conversations to compare the proposed coverage and the reasoning behind it, then follow up on differences before choosing.
Why one consultation is usually not enough
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says the outcome depends largely on the surgeon selected. It advises choosing a doctor who understands hair loss and regularly performs transplants.
A second consultation gives you another explanation of how to approach your case. So you can see whether both surgeons propose the same area, whether their hairline designs differ, and whether either leaves a concern unanswered.
The Bangkok patients below describe both similar estimates and substantial changes after discussing the design. Don't assume agreement or disagreement tells you which surgeon is right until you understand what each plan covers.
What a consultation actually gives you
An in-person consultation can establish whether surgery is appropriate for you. The AAD describes a thorough scalp examination as part of a dermatologist's assessment.
For the comparison, request a written account of the proposed treatment and who gave the advice. Keep the preliminary remote estimate separate from anything the surgeon says must wait for a direct examination.
Bangkok Hair Clinic says its surgeons work with patients on a detailed treatment plan. Hairsmith emphasizes precise graft estimation, so ask for the reasoning behind the number as well as the number itself.
The graft estimate is the number to compare
Compare the graft estimate beside the area it is meant to cover. A quote for the front alone answers a different brief from one that also addresses thinning through the middle.
Hair Transplant Mentor cautions that graft totals don't tell the whole story. So if two estimates differ, establish whether the surgeons are proposing different coverage or a different hairline before trying to choose between them.
Our guide to how many grafts you might need covers that planning question. For choosing how many consultations to have, an unexplained difference is a reason to follow up or seek another opinion.
What to compare across surgeons
Keep each reply beside the same comparison fields. This makes it easier to spot a missing explanation without relying on your memory of separate calls.
| Comparison field | What to record | What a difference means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Surgeon and surgical roles | Who assessed you and who would perform the relevant steps | Establish whose clinical opinion you are comparing |
| Treatment area and hairline | Areas included, areas left untreated and proposed hairline | Check whether the plans address the same goal |
| Graft estimate | Range and the explanation for it | Resolve different assumptions before choosing a number |
| Technique and examination | Proposed method, reason for it and what needs direct assessment | Keep unresolved clinical decisions visible |
| Price and inclusions | Written quote, included care and conditions | Compare the cost of the stated plan |
| Communication | How the clinician explains donor limits and future loss | Identify concerns that still need an answer |
Use our consultation questions when preparing for the conversation. Here, the task is to compare the answers you receive.
Graft count and hairline design
Get the proposed hairline described alongside the estimate. Hair Transplant Mentor warns that a very low hairline can use a substantial amount of donor hair, leaving fewer options if loss progresses.
So ask each surgeon to explain how the design fits your stated goal and future needs. A lower hairline and a higher graft count may belong to the same proposal, so separating them in your comparison hides the reason for the difference.
Price
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) says consultation is needed to establish the cost of an individual transplant. Hairsmith also identifies clinic operating costs as a reason prices vary.
Request a total for the proposed work, with inclusions and conditions in writing. A per-graft rate and a starting package price still need to be applied to your case before you can compare them.
How many is enough, and when to stop
We would stop adding consultations once you can explain the differences between the remaining plans and identify what still needs an examination. If the area, graft range or donor reasoning remains unclear after follow-up, seek another clinical opinion.
Some patients speak with more doctors. In a general discussion separate from these Thai accounts, u/Nsraynor reported consulting five doctors and having surface conversations with a total of eight, describing the plans as "wildly different."
The poster found the work burdensome but was glad to have done it. You can use a smaller shortlist while still following up on a disagreement that would change your decision.
Spotting a realistic plan versus an aggressive one
Compare how each surgeon explains the limits of the plan. If one discusses future hair loss and donor reserves while another promises a low hairline without addressing either, take that difference back to the second surgeon before committing.
Hair Transplant Mentor flags pressure for an immediate deposit, the same graft recommendation for everyone and density promises without discussion of donor limitations. Those concerns call for clarification; the graft total alone can't settle them.
A surgeon may also advise against the treatment you expected. The ISHRS describes declining surgery when it would be inappropriate as ethical medical practice.
One Thai patient on Pantip described a doctor proposing treatment at the front but medication first for thinning through the middle. In the translated account, the patient appreciated being offered a chance to avoid transplanting that area.
When comparing your own plans, record any recommendation to delay surgery or leave an area untreated, along with the reason. Take that reasoning to the next consultation instead of asking only for another graft estimate.
The donor area is a limited resource
The donor area supplies the hair moved during a transplant. The ISHRS includes reserves for future use in its description of a suitable candidate.
Compare how the surgeons account for that reserve. Ask for an explanation if a proposal focuses on covering every thinning area now without discussing future needs.
The smallest estimate still needs a convincing rationale. Choosing fewer grafts without understanding the intended coverage doesn't resolve the decision either.
What patients actually do in Thailand
Shortlisting clinics and completing consultations are different steps. A Thai poster on Pantip considered Hairsmith, Mediren, BEQ and DHT, then asked other patients for their experiences before deciding.
The Bangkok accounts below show what patients learned once they began comparing individual plans.
A patient who consulted three Bangkok surgeons
u/Carl_lfc reported estimates between 2,100 and 2,700 grafts across three Bangkok consultations. The poster described different hairline discussions, communication experiences and quotes, and remained undecided.
That uncertainty came after getting several opinions. For your own shortlist, write down what each consultation helped you understand and what remains unresolved, even when the graft estimates look close.
A patient who compared Bangkok doctors from photos
u/Any-Drawing2671 wrote that some Bangkok doctors estimated 3,000 grafts from photos. The plan the poster chose went from 2,500 to 1,800 after the hairline design discussion.
The poster took that reduction as reassurance that the doctor wasn't selling unnecessary grafts, and also described a video call before sending money.
Use that example to confirm how much of your remote estimate depends on the final design. A reduction needs an explanation just as an increase does.
Judge the surgeon, not the clinic
The ISHRS recommends considering a surgeon's credentials and experience, alongside recommendations and case photographs. Record the individual clinician behind each plan so you can check their experience separately from the clinic's reputation.
Our guide to checking surgeon credentials covers that task. Keep the name attached to the proposed work when you ask for a written quote.
Compare before you fly: virtual consultations
You can begin comparing Thailand plans from home. Before arranging a call, establish whether you will speak with the surgeon and whether the reply will include a preliminary treatment plan and fee estimate.
Make each remote consultation comparable
We recommend sending each shortlisted clinic the same current photos, labeled with the date taken, and the same written goal. If you describe a different goal to each clinic, it becomes harder to tell why the replies differ.
Save the replies using the comparison fields above. Keep the stated areas beside the graft range, and record anything the clinician says can only be confirmed in person.
If the plans differ, return to the areas and goals before comparing prices. Ask the clinics to explain the difference, then seek another opinion if a major uncertainty remains.
Ultima Hair Center advertises video consultations with photo sharing for people outside Bangkok or abroad. Bangkok Health Service describes a pre-travel video consultation followed by a physical consultation in Bangkok to confirm the plan (both consultation offers read 24 October 2026).
That second appointment matters when you are deciding what to book from overseas. Ask what could change after examination, including the quote or proposed procedure, and get the clinic's own terms before paying.
u/Cool-Paper-218 described differing opinions from photos after contacting several Bangkok clinics. The poster then had a video consultation with a surgeon and received a written summary covering timing, guidance and fees.
Keep that kind of summary with the original photos and your stated goal. Bring it back into the discussion when the surgeon examines you in Thailand, so any change can be explained against the earlier plan.
What a Thailand consultation costs
Confirm the appointment fee before arranging each consultation. HairTran advertises a free consultation; ask each clinic what its appointment includes and whether you can speak with the surgeon remotely.
Keep the consultation fee separate from the surgery quote. The prices below describe proposed treatment, so they don't tell you what another clinic charges for an appointment.
Clinic-published prices
We compare what clinics publish and haven't visited them.
| Clinic | Published surgery pricing | What to clarify for your comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Hairsmith | Labels its rates as 2025 pricing: THB 80 per graft for at least 1,000 grafts; below that, THB 90 per graft with a THB 59,000 minimum charge. Non-shaven FUE costs THB 120 per graft. | Which rate and minimum apply to your proposed work |
| HairTran | Starting at THB 102,000 | Your own total, planned graft count and included care |
FUE means follicular unit excision, taking small natural groups of hairs individually for transplantation, as described by the ISHRS. Record the proposed method on your quote so you can compare the price for the same kind of work.
With a per-graft quote, keep the estimate and minimum charge visible beside the rate. With a starting price, request the total for your agreed area and goal rather than treating the advertised figure as your budget.
These clinic prices and the consultation offer above were read 19 October 2026.
Patient-reported quotes
A patient wrote: "Fee was 129,000THB for first 1500 grafts and additional 75THB per graft." u/Cool-Paper-218 reported that Bangkok Hair Clinic quote.
That pricing structure has an initial graft allowance and a rate for additional grafts. So when comparing a quote like it with a single per-graft price, ask for the total at the proposed graft count and confirm what it includes.
Keep the patient's quote separate from the price offered to you. Use it to understand how a fee can be structured, then get your own written estimate.
Other factors that decide it
A patient discussing a Bangkok choice on Hair Restoration Network said recommendations, travel distance and package inclusions mattered alongside price. Put those practical differences beside the treatment plans before deciding which options you can realistically pursue.
u/Cool-Paper-218 described limited work leave, slow replies and some Bangkok clinics booked far ahead when contacted. Establish availability early, then compare the clinical plan before allowing a convenient date to decide for you.
If your preferred surgeon can't fit your dates, decide whether to change the trip or assess another surgeon. Apply the same comparison to that next opinion, including what remains provisional until examination.
How to make the final decision
Return to the goal you sent with your photos. Compare how each surgeon proposes to meet it, what they would leave untreated, and how they explain donor limits and future hair loss.
In the discussion under the three-doctor Bangkok account, u/Lopsided_Pair5727 focused on finding the doctor who fits the patient's requirements. So compare each doctor's proposal with the goal you sent.
If two options remain, identify the difference that still prevents a decision. A discussion about the proposed hairline may resolve it; an unanswered disagreement about donor use is a reason to seek another clinical opinion.
Next step: book the consultations
Contact your shortlisted clinics to ask about photo, phone or video consultations before travel. Bangkok Hair Clinic lists LINE, telephone and email as contact options.
Send your goal and photos, keep the replies, and leave time to clarify differences before committing. Hair Transplant Mentor advises that you shouldn't feel obliged to book surgery during a consultation.
You can share the plans you're comparing with us, including the part that remains unclear. Start with the difference you need explained rather than another request for a general clinic recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
How many doctors should I consult before deciding on a hair transplant?
We recommend starting with two to five Thailand surgeons or clinics. Add another opinion if a material disagreement remains after clarification, and stop expanding the shortlist once you understand the choices. That is our practical recommendation, not a published average of how many consultations patients complete.
Why have two surgeons given me different graft estimates?
They may be proposing different treatment areas or hairline designs. In a Bangkok account, u/Any-Drawing2671 reported that the estimate changed after the hairline discussion. Compare the area and goal behind each estimate, then ask the surgeons to explain any remaining difference.
I've seen three Bangkok surgeons and still can't choose. What next?
Return to the difference you haven't resolved, such as the proposed hairline or donor reasoning. Go back to the relevant clinician for an explanation. If the disagreement would materially change the treatment and remains unanswered, seek another opinion before booking.
Can patient reviews help me choose a Thai clinic?
They can help you identify experiences and concerns to discuss with the surgeon. Read what patients say about consultations and communication alongside the actual plan for your case. A recommendation from someone with a different goal doesn't resolve an unexplained difference between your own quotes.
How do I compare the total cost in US dollars?
Get written quotes in baht for the proposed treatment. Compare the totals using the same exchange rate, adding travel and accommodation separately unless explicitly included. A patient's quoted procedure fee can't tell you the total cost of your own Thailand trip.
