Hair Transplant India vs Thailand: Costs, Doctors and Travel
One second-time patient weighed a hair transplant in Thailand against a clinic in India in March 2026. The pull toward India came down to two lines: "I have family there," and in Thailand "most of the top clinics seem to have waitlists of a year or more" (u/No-Memory4393, r/HairTransplants).
Indian clinics that publish a rate mostly sit under a dollar a graft once converted, while Bangkok patients report paying $1.09 to $3.71 a graft. Neither country wins overall. India can suit a reader with family there who will check the doctor's registration, and Thailand a reader whose route to Bangkok is easier and who wants medication in the price.
This page is for readers in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, including readers of Indian origin weighing a trip home.
Who Does the Work, and What to Ask
India: What the National Medical Commission Says
India's medical regulator, the National Medical Commission (NMC), set out who may do what in a letter of 20 September 2022. A scanned copy of the letter is hosted by the news site Medical Dialogues.
It calls any skin incision "for the purpose of tissue removal from the scalp or body" a surgical procedure, such as "incising the FUE graft" and "creating recipient sites". It says "Such procedures must be performed by a properly trained and licensed Registered Medical Practitioner (RMP) i.e practitioner of Modern Medicine." FUE is follicular unit excision, where grafts come out one at a time.
The word "preferably" covers only training, such as "MCh/DNB Plastic surgery, MD/DNB Dermatology". The license isn't optional.
The letter lists "Donor hair harvesting, Hairline design, Recipient site creation" among the steps that "should only be performed by a RMP". Assistants "should perform tasks only under the supervision of a RMP", and it asks for the "presence of the anesthetist in the operation room area".
A second NMC letter the same day, an advisory on treatment by unqualified people, says "Patient should meet the doctor, who is going to perform hair transplant or aesthetic surgery and know his qualifications, experience."
Clinics describe their own staffing differently. DHI India says "No technicians are involved in the surgical procedure," and Eugenix says its lead surgeon supervises "throughout, taking rounds between active steps". Ask which steps your named doctor will do.
How to Check an Indian Doctor's Registration
India's National Medical Commission Act, 2019 bars anyone not enrolled in the State Register or the National Register from practising medicine "as a qualified medical practitioner". The penalty runs to a year in prison, a fine of up to five lakh rupees (a lakh is 100,000), or both.
You can search the NMC's Indian Medical Register by name, registration number or state medical council. Its own page notes "This data is being updated", so ask for the state council registration too.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Council said only doctors with "valid registration with the state medical Council can perform aesthetic and cosmetology procedures involving skin and hair, including hair transplantation", Medical Dialogues reported in February 2026.
Ask for the doctor's full name, registration number and the council that issued it.
What NABH Accreditation Covers
NABH, the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers, works "under the Quality Council of India (QCI)". On its own site it says: "No, NABH accreditation is voluntary."
Its directory "lists only hospitals with NABH accreditation, certification, or empanelment", and warns some entries "may be temporarily incomplete or inconsistent". So it tells you about the facility, not the surgeon.
DHI India calls itself "India's First & Only NABH-Accredited Hair Transplant Clinic". Eugenix says its Gurugram center is NABH accredited, so check each name in the directory.
Thailand: Ask Which Steps the Doctor Does
Thailand's Medical Profession Act says "No one shall carry out the medical practices or represent that he is ready to carry out the medical practices unless he is a medical practitioner under this Act", with listed exceptions (Medical Council of Thailand). You can look a doctor up by name, in Thai or English, on the Council's register.
The ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) says harvesting should be "physician-driven and performed", with grafts placed "most often by the trained staff." The ABHRS (American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery) calls a doctor's extraction incisions "a non-delegable act" and says "the creation of incisions for placement of grafts is also non-delegable".
Ask every clinic: "Which steps will the surgeon do, and which will staff do?"
Our Thailand safety guide covers the Thai rules in more depth.
What Official Bodies and Studies Say About Safety
We found no peer-reviewed study that compares complication rates for hair transplant procedures in India and Thailand.
A 2008 guideline in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology said "It is preferable, but not mandatory to have a standby anesthetist" (Patwardhan and Mysore). The NMC's 2022 letter, the later of the two, says it is "ideal to have a standby anaesthetist" and, in a later section, asks for the anesthetist to be present in the operation room area.
A 2021 practice guideline describes "a debate as to who can do what, what should be the training for staff, role of technicians" (Mysore and colleagues). Its first author was listed at the Venkat Center, a clinic on this page.
Questions to Send Both Clinics Before You Pay a Deposit
- What is the operating doctor's full name, registration number and issuing council?
- Which steps will the surgeon do, and which will staff do?
- Which technique and how many grafts do you propose, in writing?
- Is the price per graft or per hair, and does it include tax, the anesthetist, PRP (platelet-rich plasma), medicines and blood tests?
- Who answers my messages after I fly home?
- Which visa do your international patients use, and do you write the hospital letter?
Cost Comparison: What Clinics Publish and What Patients Report Paying
What Indian Clinics Publish
Indian clinics price mostly per graft, in rupees, and the spread is wide. These figures were read 17 October 2026 and converted at INR 95.0194 per USD, the FBIL rate the Reserve Bank of India showed for 16 October 2026.
We compare what clinics publish; we haven't visited these clinics or had procedures at them.
| Clinic | Figure as published | In USD | Unit and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care Well Medical Centre, New Delhi | FUE ₹35-₹50; FUT ₹30-₹45; DHI ₹60-₹80 | USD 0.37-0.53; 0.32-0.47; 0.63-0.84 | Per graft; FUE rate "inclusive of all services" |
| Venkat Center, Bengaluru | Gold tier (Dr. Mihir or Dr Deeksha) Rs 35-45; Diamond (Dr. Aniketh) Rs 55-65; Platinum (Dr. Venkat) Rs 70-80 | USD 0.37-0.47; 0.58-0.68; 0.74-0.84 | Per graft, before GST (India's goods and services tax) |
| DHI India | Rs 90 to Rs 150 per hair; its Delhi page says Rs 60 to Rs 100 per hair for FUE | USD 0.95-1.58; 0.63-1.05 per hair | Per hair, not per graft; excludes taxes |
| AK Clinics, Delhi and other cities | India-wide ₹30 to ₹120 per graft; INR 125,000 to INR 350,500 for 2,000-3,000 grafts | USD 0.32-1.26; USD 1,316-3,689 | Ranges on its cost page; AK says "most clinics, including ours, now offer package deals" |
| Eugenix Hair Sciences, Gurugram | No fixed per-graft figure; it says the graft count "depends on hair loss pattern, donor density, and hair characteristics" | none | Says Indian clinics "typically charge between Rs 100 and Rs 500+ per hair graft" (USD 1.05-5.26) |
FUT is the strip method, and direct hair implantation (DHI) places grafts with an implanter pen. Musk Clinic in Ahmedabad and MedLinks in Delhi show no price on their hair pages.
Venkat Center's page prints a second set of rates for the same surgeons in a calculator block, Rs 30, Rs 40-50 and Rs 60-70 per graft. DHI India's two pages disagree with each other too, and neither is dated.
A per-hair price isn't a per-graft price. Venkat Center says "1 graft on average is 2.2 hair follicles," so ask DHI India for a total rather than a rate.
Why an Indian Price Is Hard to Compare
The surgeon changes the rate. At Venkat Center a graft costs about twice as much with Dr. Venkat as in the Gold tier.
Tax may or may not be in the figure. Eugenix says packages "attract 5% GST, included in the overall price quoted at Eugenix", while Darling Buds in Mohali adds "the government tax portion (presently the GST is 18%)", so ask whether GST is in your quote.
Where you live can matter. One Delhi clinic on our cost by country comparison gives one price for Indian patients and another for international patients.
Booking platforms publish their own numbers, and these are listings, not a clinic's price. Pristyn Care, a surgery-booking platform, shows the same ₹50,000 to ₹90,000 (USD 526-947) for Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai, and Bookimed, a medical tourism marketplace, gives an average of "$800 to $1,200".
Price by Technique and City
Technique moves the price, as Care Well's three rows show.
No Bangkok clinic we checked publishes its own per-graft DHI rate. HairTran and Hairsmith include the implanter pen in their FUE price.
Unshaven work costs more at Venkat Center and Hairsmith, the two clinics here that publish both rates. Venkat Center prints Rs 100-120 (USD 1.05-1.26) per graft for long hair FUE, and Hairsmith ฿120 ($3.62) for non-shaven FUE. HairTran publishes ฿100 ($3.02) for non-shaven FUE.
For cities, AK Clinics prints what it calls "only approximate ranges", with no graft count. Across Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad they run from INR 55,000 to INR 150,000 (USD 579-1,579) in Hyderabad up to INR 80,000 to INR 350,000 (USD 842-3,683) in Mumbai.
Thailand Figures
In Bangkok, patients report paying ฿36-123 ($1.09-$3.71) per graft across five clinics, from 31 reports and quotes between 2023 and 2026. Most reports at Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic and Hairsmith fall at ฿65-90 ($1.96-$2.72).
Hairsmith publishes ฿80 ($2.41) per graft as 2025 pricing and HairTran a starting price of ฿102,000 ($3,080), both read 23 September 2026. Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).
Our Thailand cost page has the clinic-by-clinic detail.
What Each Price Includes
| Clinic | In or out, as the clinic states it |
|---|---|
| Venkat Center, Bengaluru | Leaves out "PRP, blood tests, drugs and anesthetist charges, or admission to hospital where needed"; includes "free consultation for one year after surgery" |
| DHI India | "This cost does not include GST, medicines, and postoperative care fees" |
| Eugenix | 5% GST included; PRP sessions "priced separately" |
| Hairsmith, Bangkok | 12 months of hair growth medication; implanter pen at no additional cost |
| HairTran, Bangkok | Implanter pen at no additional cost |
Price the hotel and transfers yourself unless a written package names them.
What Patients Report Paying in India
Each row is one person's figure on the date shown, not a current quote. Rupees are converted at the same INR 95.0194 rate.
| Poster and date | Clinic and city as posted | Figure as posted | In USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| u/Wulfwai, 21 August 2024 | VPlant Hair Clinic, Mumbai; lives in the US | "I paid 900$ USD for 2400 grafts" | As posted |
| u/Ok_Slide_3723, January and February 2026 | "Siddharth clinic, Surat Gujarat."; flies in from the US | "Was some $1200" for 2,500 grafts; "Some $0.65 cents per graft.." | As posted |
| u/Nightcrawler_52, 9 October 2024 | AlloRoots, Delhi | "Cost was $0.76 per graft." | As posted |
| u/anoxy21, 12 November 2024 | Clinique Internationale, Mumbai; Mumbai is home | "INR 30 per graft, includes 4 PRP and monthly follow ups." | USD 0.32 per graft |
| u/BitThin6865, 6 August 2025, and u/Responsible-Set3407, 22 June 2026 | Dr Anchal Shah, Ahmedabad | "Cost is 50 INR for grafts."; "She charged 65rs per grafts." | USD 0.53; USD 0.68 per graft |
All posts are on r/HairTransplants. The two US residents reported $900 and about $1,200.
A 2,500-Graft Example
This is our arithmetic on the published rates, for the procedure alone. It isn't a quote.
| Rate used | Per graft | 2,500 grafts | In USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Care Well FUE, Delhi | ₹35-₹50 | INR 87,500 to INR 125,000 | USD 921-1,316 |
| Venkat Center Platinum tier | Rs 70-80 | INR 175,000 to INR 200,000 | USD 1,842-2,105 |
| Bangkok, three clinics | ฿65-90 | ฿162,500-฿225,000 | $4,900-$6,790 |
| Bangkok, full reported range | ฿36-123 | ฿90,000-฿307,500 | $2,720-$9,280 |
The Venkat figure excludes GST, anesthetist and drug charges. Every Indian figure here sits below the lowest Bangkok figure, so the trip decides whether that gap survives.
What the Whole Trip Costs From Your Home Country
We don't quote flight times or fares. Price a return flight from your own airport to Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore and to Bangkok, on the same dates.
For each country, add the written procedure quote, any tax it leaves out, the return fare, the nights the clinic wants you nearby, transfers and the visa. If the India fare and nights cost more than the procedure gap above, Bangkok comes out cheaper for you. The answer varies by home city.
Ask the clinic how many nights it wants. One US resident treated in Mumbai wrote, "I did go back the next day for a head wash and traveled 3 days after with no issues" (u/Wulfwai, February 2025). Our Thailand stay guide covers Bangkok.
Entry Rules for India and Thailand
US, UK, Canadian and Australian passports are all on India's e-Visa eligibility list. For treatment there is an e-Medical Visa, valid "One year (365 days) from the date of arrival into India", which needs a letter from the Indian hospital on its letterhead.
For an e-Medical Visa, apply at least 4 days before arrival, and note an e-Visa is "non-extendable, non-convertible". The portal doesn't say whether an elective hair transplant counts as "medical treatment", so ask the clinic which visa its international patients use.
For Thailand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says its 30-day visa exemption for tourism has covered passport holders of 60 countries and territories since 15 September 2026. It says the exemptions "apply to travel for tourism purposes only", and that other purposes "must refer to the relevant visa category", so check your passport and purpose before you book.
What Governments Say About Travelling to India
The UK's FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) says "FCDO advises against all travel to parts of India." Those parts are the area within 10 km of the Pakistan border and Jammu and Kashmir, apart from air travel to Jammu city, and it advises against all but essential travel to Manipur.
Canada says "Exercise a high degree of caution in India due to the threat of terrorist attacks throughout the country." Australia's Smartraveller says "Exercise a high degree of caution in India overall due to the threat of terrorism and crime and the risk of civil unrest."
For a US passport, read the State Department's India advisory on travel.state.gov before you book. We don't quote its level here.
United States
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) says "Follow-up care for complications might be expensive." It also says "Get copies of all your medical records from the medical facility at your destination before you return home."
United Kingdom
The FCDO's India health page says to "discuss plans with your UK doctor before going ahead with any medical procedures abroad". Its main India advice page warns "Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)."
Canada
Canada says "Most hospitals require up-front payment or confirmation of insurance coverage before commencing treatment." Ask each clinic how much it wants up front, and when.
Australia
Smartraveller says you must complete the online e-Arrival Card "up to 3 days before travel to India". It also lists "an online health self-declaration form up to 24 hours before arrival in India, for Ebola screening."
If You Are of Indian Origin: Going Home or Flying to Bangkok
What Family Nearby Changes
One patient who flies in from the US combined surgery with a family visit. u/Ok_Slide_3723 "Went to meet family and had it done while being there" (January 2026).
A commenter told an India-bound patient that "having family in India is a real advantage for follow-up" (u/WashDowntown4539, March 2026). The FCDO notes that "Hospitals in India usually ask for a guardian or an attendant to stay in the hospital with the patient," and India grants "Only two e-Medical Attendant Visas" per e-Medical Visa.
OCI Card and Entry
An OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card changes the paperwork. The UK says "If you hold a valid Overseas Citizen of India ( OCI ) card, you can use this, along with your valid British passport, to visit India. You do not need a visa." (FCDO).
Smartraveller says the e-Arrival Card rule "applies to Australian citizens and OCI card holders." For Bangkok, your entry follows the passport you travel on.
Follow-Up and Language When You Live Abroad
u/Wulfwai, treated in Mumbai, wrote "I've been going to a dermatologist in the states for follow up" (r/HairTransplants, August 2024). In a thread started by a US reader weighing clinics abroad, one commenter wrote "no doc will do more than email you and look at photos" (u/hairburner4, April 2026).
So line up a doctor at home before you go, and ask in writing what language the aftercare instructions come in. One enquirer said of a Delhi doctor's assistant, "They speak English." (u/IMightBYourDad, July 2026).
Our Thailand follow-up guide covers what Bangkok clinics say about care after you leave.
What Real Patients Say: India vs Thailand
India Patient Accounts
Price against home is one reason posters give. u/bossmoney187 wrote in December 2021: "But I would never want to pay $30-50k for it in North America."
Who did the work varies by clinic. An Ahmedabad patient wrote that the "entire procedure was done by Dr Anchal only" (u/Responsible-Set3407, June 2026), while several others describe technicians extracting and implanting while the doctor designs the hairline and cuts the recipient sites.
The complaints follow the same lines. A Glasgow patient who flew to Jaipur for a 4,500-graft strip procedure wrote in September 2026 that technicians did most of the work, the result at one year was poor, and aftercare on a return visit was weak.
Others point at the surgeon, not the country. "It depends on the surgeon not the country," wrote u/Original-Alfalfa4406 in July 2025, and another poster wrote that "results depend way more on the surgeon and planning than the clinic brand itself" (u/MiserableOil737, May 2026).
A Cost Comparison Across Countries
A US east coast poster who priced several countries in August 2021 listed an India total of "$3500 - 9100" (u/Autoground). Those prices are five years old. Our Thailand reviews page collects recent posts about HairTran and Absolute.
What a Forum Post Cannot Tell You
A post tells you what one person paid and felt on one date. It can't give you a clinic's complication rate, and a count of happy or angry posts isn't a rate either.

Who Each Option Suits
India May Suit You If
- You have family in an Indian city who can help after surgery, or you're already making the trip.
- Your own fare and nights to India still leave you under the Bangkok total.
- You'll check the doctor's registration and get the steps in writing.
Thailand May Suit You If
- Your route to Bangkok costs less or fits your dates better.
- You want medication named in the price, as Hairsmith lists 12 months of hair growth medication.
- You want to check the doctor by name, in Thai or English, on the Medical Council's register.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a hair transplant cost in India?
Published rates run from Care Well's ₹35-₹50 (USD 0.37-0.53) per graft for FUE in Delhi to Venkat Center's Rs 70-80 (USD 0.74-0.84) with Dr. Venkat in Bengaluru, before GST. At 2,500 grafts that's about USD 921 to 2,105 for the procedure. Ask what tax, anesthetist and medicine charges sit on top.
Is it still cheaper once you add the flight?
Price both routes from your own airport for the same dates. On the published rates above, the Indian procedure costs less than the Bangkok figures across both ranges. Bangkok comes out cheaper only if India's extra fare, nights and visa cost more than that gap.
Who is allowed to perform a hair transplant in India?
The National Medical Commission's 2022 letter says incision steps "must be performed by a properly trained and licensed Registered Medical Practitioner". It prefers plastic surgery or dermatology training. Check the doctor on the NMC's Indian Medical Register or with the state medical council.
Will the doctor do the whole procedure?
Ask each clinic in writing. DHI India says "No technicians are involved in the surgical procedure," while Eugenix says its lead surgeon supervises "throughout, taking rounds between active steps". In Thailand, ask "Which steps will the surgeon do, and which will staff do?"
What happens with follow-up after I fly home?
Settle who answers, how, and what would need a visit before you book. One US resident treated in Mumbai saw a dermatologist at home. The CDC says to "Get copies of all your medical records from the medical facility at your destination before you return home."
