Hair Transplant Follow-Up After You Fly Home From Thailand: What Clinics Say They Offer

One r/HairTransplants thread from 26 September 2026 is titled "how important is aftercare once you fly home?" (thread). For Thai clinics, the answer on their own pages is mixed.

Of 13 Thai clinics we compared, four say on their own pages that patients abroad can follow up online, virtually or by photos: HairTran, Bangkok Hair Clinic, BLS Hair Center and Hairsmith. The other nine list follow-up visits or are silent on doing it from a distance, on the pages we compared. That's what the clinics publish, not a measure of what they do.

This page is part of our guide to hair transplants in Thailand. We compare what clinics publish and haven't visited them, so each statement below is a clinic's, a named source's or a patient's, and says so.

Hair Transplant Follow-Up Schedules and Remote Care at 13 Thai Clinics

Each cell is what the clinic's own page says. Where a cell says Not stated, we didn't find it on the pages linked in that row.

ClinicVisits its page listsFollow-up after you go home
HairTran1 day, 2 weeks, then 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after surgeryOnline follow-up system: photos for the doctors to review, a video call if you have questions, care for a full year
Bangkok Hair Clinic2 weeks, then 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 monthsCheck-ins described as "in-person or virtual"
BLS Hair Center (Thai page)Check-up appointments at the clinicPatients can "follow up online", for foreign patients or people who cannot conveniently travel (our translation)
Hairsmith (Thai article)1 day, 14 days, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, plus 9 and 18 months if hair grows slowly (our translation); its English cost page says "every 3 months for one year"Photos at specified angles, watched by staff through an online system (our translation)
Yanhee International HospitalDay 1, day 3 and one weekNot stated
BHI ClinicThe day after surgery, which it calls "mandatory"Not stated
Absolute Hair ClinicDay 2, after which "you can leave this day"Not stated
DHT ClinicDay 3 for follow-up, or day 4 in mega sessions; its page says you may depart on either day insteadNot stated; email or phone for complications
Thai Hair Clinic (Chiang Mai)A hair wash at the clinic every day until departureNot stated; LINE and WhatsApp listed
CosmoPrime"Follow-up appointments are scheduled"Not stated
Max Hair Thailand (long-hair technique page)"at 14 days, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months"Not stated
DHI ThailandA follow-up care plan, with scheduled transport to appointments and follow-up visitsNot stated
Esthetic Hair Thailand (Phuket)"around 3 nights near the clinic" for the procedure and first follow-upNot stated

A schedule lists when a clinic wants to see you. It isn't a forecast of hair growth. Where a page doesn't say which visits can be remote, the table doesn't either.

What Follow-Up Is For, and the Part You Do Before You Leave

Hair transplant recovery has two parts: the visits in Thailand and the check-ins after you leave.

An international panel of 38 experts in hair transplantation from 17 countries agreed in a 2023 consensus statement that "Close follow-up should be carried out during the first year after transplant." (Vañó-Galván and colleagues). The abstract doesn't say how that should work from another country.

The earliest visits are in person, and clinics give each one a job. BHI Clinic's page on follicular unit excision (FUE) describes "a mandatory follow-up visit the day after surgery" for bandage removal, a professional hair wash and aftercare instruction. Yanhee's hair transplant page says "the day-1 visit is where the dressing comes off, the grafts are inspected and the first wash is done properly."

One patient who used HairTran wrote in March 2026 that they hit their head on a low-hanging beam on day 2, and that at the follow-up visit the doctor planned a fix for the next day.

The doctor "didn't want me to leave Bangkok without getting it fixed", the patient wrote, and their advice to anyone deciding how long to stay was to "stay as long as you can" (u/blackbandana123, 27 Mar 2026). That's one anonymous account about one clinic.

How many days to stay is a separate question, and our page on how long to stay in Thailand covers it. Whatever you decide, ask the clinic for its full appointment schedule before you book flights.

Hair Transplant Aftercare From Abroad: What Clinics Say

Four clinics describe follow-up from a distance on their pages. The other nine don't.

HairTran: Online System, Photos and a Video Call

HairTran's home page says "Through our dedicated online follow-up system for international patients, you can send photos of your transplanted area for our doctors to review and track your progress." It adds that it can arrange a video call with your doctor, and that you'll get "continuous, personalized care for a full year after your hair transplant".

The same page says its 1-year follow-up program is there "to closely monitor your new hair growth and scalp recovery". Its FUE page says "You don't have to worry about follow-ups because all of that can be done online and we have adapted our procedure to suit hair transplant clients that live overseas."

The pages don't say how fast the doctors reply, how many rounds of photos you get or what a video call costs.

Bangkok Hair Clinic: In-Person or Virtual Check-Ins

The clinic's DHI page lists "in-person or virtual check-ins at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months". It doesn't define "virtual check-ins", so photos, a video call or a chat are all possible readings. Its home page lists a LINE account, a messaging app, for contact.

BLS Hair Center: Online Follow-Up for Foreign Patients

BLS Hair Center's pre- and post-care page is in Thai. In our translation it says patients get check-up appointments at the clinic and can also follow up online, "for foreign patients or people who cannot conveniently travel". The page names no format, such as photos or video.

Hairsmith: Photos at Specified Angles

Hairsmith's article on follow-up is in Thai. In our translation it says patients who live in another province or abroad can also follow up: the clinic has them take "photos at specified angles", and staff look after it "closely through an online system". The page doesn't print the angles.

Nine Clinics List Follow-Up but Don't Say How It Works From Abroad

Yanhee, BHI Clinic, Absolute, DHT Clinic, Thai Hair Clinic, CosmoPrime, Max Hair Thailand, DHI Thailand and Esthetic Hair Thailand describe follow-up visits or a care plan. None of the pages linked in the table says follow-up can be done from home.

A page that's silent on remote follow-up leaves the question open, so ask the clinic before you pay. CosmoPrime's home page says "Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and support optimal results". It doesn't say whether that can be done from home.

The Contact Channels Clinics Print

HairTran's FAQ answers "How can I contact Hairtran Clinic after returning home?" with phone, LINE and email for international patients (HairTran). Thai Hair Clinic lists LINE and WhatsApp, with WhatsApp marked "messages only" (Thai Hair Clinic).

DHT Clinic says that if you have complications "you may contact us by email or phone" and that "we will respond immediately". That's a promise, not a response time.

What the Pages Don't Say: Questions to Ask Before You Pay

The same gaps come up across the pages above. Put these questions to your clinic and keep the answers in writing:

Our guide to booking a hair transplant in Thailand covers the steps around the deposit.

How to Send Progress Photos a Clinic Can Use

Photos are how a clinic follows your recovery from a distance. Of the four clinics that describe remote follow-up, two say what they want.

HairTran's page asks for "photos of your transplanted area", and Hairsmith's Thai article asks for "photos at specified angles" (our translation). Neither prints the angles.

One Thai clinic does print a photo list, for consultations. Absolute Hair Clinic's online consultation page lists nine views under "Standard Photo Angles for Hair Transplant Assessment": a front view, a front tilted view, a top (vertex) view, right and left side views, 45-degree angles on the right and left, a back view of the donor area, and close-ups of the hairline and crown and of the donor area.

Its photo rules include consistent framing and angles, a fixed distance of 1-2 feet (about 30 to 60 cm) for standard shots, bright light without shadows or flash glare, and hair that's dry, unstyled and clean. The page is written for assessment before surgery, and it doesn't say these are the angles the clinic wants afterward.

A 2024 study in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Zhang and colleagues) developed a standardized photo guideline for online hair transplantation consultations. The authors report that "all five surgeons rated photographs taken by patients following the photo guideline as higher quality" than photos taken without it. That study covers consultation photos, and its abstract doesn't give the guideline's contents.

One patient-information site, LocalTransplants, advises sending clear images of the recipient and donor areas from the angles the clinic requests. It adds that "consistent photographs taken under similar lighting can provide a more useful comparison over time."

Our reading of these sources, as a short list:

Before You Fly: Records to Bring Home and Questions to Ask

The CDC's medical tourism page, last reviewed on 1 June 2023, tells travelers to "Arrange for follow-up care before you travel" and to "Get copies of all your medical records from the medical facility at your destination before you return home." It adds that you may need to have them translated. It covers medical tourism in general, not hair transplants.

The NHS page on cosmetic surgery abroad, last reviewed on 14 December 2022, says "Aftercare is an important part of treatment. You need to think about where check-ups will take place."

The NHS page also suggests asking what happens if there are complications, where follow-up appointments will be, what happens if you need more surgery after the original procedure ("how easily can you travel back to the destination where you had the surgery?") and "how much it'll cost".

When to Contact the Clinic and When to See a Doctor at Home

This section reports what clinics and health agencies say. It isn't medical advice for your case, and it can't tell you when something is an emergency. If you think it is one, call local emergency services.

What Clinics Tell Patients to Call About

Yanhee International Hospital's page lists these reasons to call the hospital:

That's Yanhee's list for its own patients. Bangkok Hair Clinic's DHI page says "If you experience severe symptoms or if your condition does not improve as expected, please contact the clinic for a follow-up."

Our safety guide for hair transplants in Thailand covers how to check a clinic before you book.

What Sources Say About Seeing a Doctor at Home

Yanhee lists fever as a reason to call. The NHS says "A high temperature is usually considered to be 38C or above. This is sometimes called a fever." (NHS, last reviewed 24 May 2023). That's a general adult definition, not hair transplant advice.

A 2026 narrative review of complications after FUE hair transplantation (Romera de Blas and colleagues, Frontiers in Medicine) says "Crust formation is a normal part of postoperative healing after FUE", and that "Persistent crusts beyond 2 weeks should therefore be evaluated, as they may indicate delayed healing." The review covers FUE hair transplants only.

Photos have limits. LocalTransplants says "photographs cannot replace an examination when findings are unclear."

If you had FUT, the stitches or staples come out later. Yanhee's page says "the sutures or staples come out at seven to fourteen days, so either stay for that or arrange removal at home." It doesn't say who does the removal at home.

A US clinic, Bernstein Medical, says it usually removes staples "10 and 20 days post-op" and that "Patients that travel can have this done in their home town." It says it provides "instructions and a staple remover that is easy for any health care professional to use". The answer is dated 14 January 2008.

Care at home is a cost of its own. The CDC says "Follow-up care for complications might be expensive. Treatment might be prolonged and might not be covered by your health insurance." It adds that supplemental travel health insurance "may also be available to cover follow-up or emergency care from procedures received abroad."

We've found no published figure for what a local dermatologist or hair restoration surgeon charges to see a patient treated in Thailand, and no source on whether they'll take the case. Ask a doctor at home before you book.

Is Follow-Up Free?

Three clinics say something about the cost of check-ups. HairTran's FUE page says "All our consultations and check-ups are free of charge!" and "All the check-ups, including additional check-ups, after a hair transplant with us, will be free of charge."

Absolute's post-op page says "Post op care is free". Hairsmith's English cost page lists "Follow-up visits every 3 months for one year" among what its price includes.

None of the three says how long the free period runs for remote check-ins, or what counts as a check-up. For the other clinics in the table we found no statement on the cost of follow-up. Our guide to hair transplant packages in Thailand shows what clinics bundle into their prices.

Check-Ins and a Results Guarantee

Two clinics tie check-ins to a guarantee. HairTran's FAQ says its 1-year results guarantee applies if the outcome falls short of the treatment plan and "you have attended all scheduled follow-up visits".

Hairsmith's Thai article says some patients never come in or send photos, that this "may put the patient in breach of the terms of the results guarantee" and that "the guarantee is treated as void" (our translation).

Neither page says whether a remote check-in counts as attending. Each statement is that clinic's own wording and doesn't apply to other clinics. Read the guarantee terms before you pay, and ask that question.

What Patients Say About Follow-Up From Abroad

In the Reddit threads we read, no patient describes doing a follow-up with a Thai clinic from home. What we did find is below.

In a March 2023 thread about HairTran, a commenter whose account is now deleted wrote that "They actively reached out to me and wanted me to come in so they could look at my progress." (r/HairTransplants, 16 Mar 2023).

That reads as an invitation to a visit, not a remote check-in, and the comment doesn't say where the commenter lives.

Another commenter in that thread, who had booked with HairTran and lives in East Asia, wrote before surgery of "looking forward to being able to do in-person checkups" (u/Additional_Show5861, 17 Mar 2023). That's a plan, not an experience.

We found one first-person account of remote follow-up, from Turkey rather than Thailand. A patient who lives in Canada and had surgery in Istanbul wrote that the doctor shared a personal WhatsApp number and that "I also send him monthly progress pictures and he responds with feedback right away." (u/SeeHairA1, 27 Sep 2026). It shows what photo-based follow-up looks like to one patient, and says nothing about any Thai clinic.

For accounts of the stay itself, see our Thailand hair transplant reviews.

Dates and Sources

Clinic pages and Reddit threads were read on 10 October 2026. For the two PubMed studies we read the abstracts. The quotes from the Frontiers review come from its full text on PubMed Central.

Translations from Thai are our own, and the NHS and CDC pages are general guidance, not hair transplant rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Thai hair transplant clinics offer follow-up after I fly home?

Four of the 13 clinics we compared say on their own pages that patients abroad can follow up online, virtually or by photos: HairTran, Bangkok Hair Clinic, BLS Hair Center and Hairsmith. The other nine list visits or are silent on doing it from a distance. Get your clinic's answer in writing before you pay a deposit.

What happens at hair transplant follow up appointments?

The earliest visits are in person. BHI Clinic lists bandage removal, a professional hair wash and aftercare instruction, and Yanhee lists dressing removal, an inspection of the hair grafts and the first wash. HairTran's 2-week visit is a "Scalp check and graft evaluation", and its 12-month visit is a final assessment.

How long does hair transplant follow-up last?

The schedules we found run about a year. HairTran and Bangkok Hair Clinic list a check-in at two weeks and visits up to 12 months, and Hairsmith's Thai article adds 9 and 18 months for slow hair growth. An expert panel agreed that close follow-up should happen "during the first year after transplant".

How do I send progress photos to my clinic?

Ask which angles of your scalp the doctor wants, then use the same angles, distance and light every time. Absolute Hair Clinic prints a nine-view photo list for consultations, which isn't a rule for follow-up photos.

When should I contact the clinic, and when should I see a doctor at home?

Yanhee's page lists bleeding that doesn't stop with gentle pressure, spreading redness or pus, fever, pain that gets worse after the first few days and a graft coming out early as reasons to call. Bangkok Hair Clinic asks patients with severe symptoms, or whose condition doesn't improve as expected, to contact it. For an emergency, call local emergency services.

Do I need to stay in Thailand for follow-up?

Clinics list early visits in Thailand: day 1, day 3 and one week at Yanhee, day 2 at Absolute, day 3 at DHT Clinic (which says you may depart that day instead), and daily washes until departure at Thai Hair Clinic. Our page on how long to stay in Thailand covers the decision.

Who pays if I need care at home?

The CDC says follow-up care for complications "might be expensive" and "might not be covered by your health insurance". We found no published figure for a local doctor's fee, so check your own policy before you travel.

Does skipping check-ins affect a guarantee?

HairTran's FAQ ties its 1-year results guarantee to having "attended all scheduled follow-up visits". Hairsmith's Thai article says not attending or not sending photos can make its guarantee void. Neither page says whether remote check-ins count, so ask the clinic and read the terms.
