Hair Transplant Cost Australia: Australia vs Thailand

After a hair transplant in Thailand, EasyRoader stayed four more days for daily clinic care, according to their Hair Restoration Network post of 23 March 2024.

Australian published prices include Gro Clinics' “From AUD $12,000+” and DDHTC's “Up to 2,000 grafts start from $8,500 including GST.” We read DDHTC's dollars as AUD from its Australian GST wording.

At 2,500 grafts, the Bangkok patient-price comparison below is ฿162,500-225,000, or A$6,988 to A$9,676, before travel. Those figures need a matching graft count and written quote before you can compare them with your Australian options.

The choice also changes where you'll have follow-up appointments and how much time you'll spend away. EasyRoader's extra clinic visits belong in that decision alongside the procedure price.

Who does the work and what to ask

Hair Doctors publishes separate prices for nurse-performed FUE under doctor supervision and doctor-performed work. Gro says your procedure is “performed by your treating doctor, never delegated to a technician,” though the same page also says the doctor “performs or oversees the transplant.” So even two Australian quotes can describe different staffing arrangements.

Ask which steps the doctor performs personally.

Ask who conducts the consultation and designs your hairline. Get names for the people making extraction and recipient-site incisions, harvesting and placing grafts.

Include whoever gives your aftercare instructions and answers questions afterward.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) says FUE harvesting should be “physician-driven and performed.” It separately says grafts are placed “most often by the trained staff.”

That distinction gives you a more useful consultation question than asking whether the procedure is simply “doctor-led.” So ask about each step, then compare the answer with the staffing described in your quote.

For Thailand, the Medical Council's English text of the Medical Profession Act says: “No one shall carry out the medical practices or represent that he is ready to carry out the medical practices unless he is a medical practitioner under this Act.” The Act lists exceptions, including certain supervised practice.

Its definition of the medical profession includes “any act of surgical procedure.” You can look up a named doctor on the Medical Council of Thailand register; the Act's wording doesn't tell you who will perform each step at your chosen clinic.

What Australian clinics publish for hair transplant cost

We compare what clinics publish and haven't visited or had a procedure at these clinics. The Australian prices and clinic offers quoted throughout this page were read 18 October 2026.

Gro's starting price and Knudsen's figures carry an explicit AUD label. DDHTC, Hair Doctors, Sydney Hair Transplant and Crown use GST wording, which is how we read their bare dollar signs as Australian dollars.

FUE Clinics, Hair and Skin Science and Gro's costs page use bare dollar signs in Australian business context without an explicit AUD label in the captured price text. We read those as AUD too; confirm the currency in your written quote.

FUE means follicular unit excision. Knudsen labels FUT as a strip procedure.

Keep those technique labels attached when asking another clinic to match a quote.

Gro Clinics: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Gold Coast“From AUD $12,000+”; its costs page says costs “typically range from around $12,000 to $17,000.”Lists a treatment plan with scalp assessment and hairline design by your doctor, and “Free follow-up for up to 18 months,” with out-of-hours support.
Darling Downs Hair Transplant Clinic (DDHTC): Brisbane and Toowoomba“Up to 2,000 grafts start from $8,500 including GST.”No separate procedure inclusion list published.
Hair Doctors: SydneyUp to 3,500 grafts: nurse-performed FUE under doctor supervision from $9,999; doctor-performed from $19,999. Up to 2,500: nurse FUE $7,999; doctor implanter pen $15,999.GST, anesthetic, facility fees and aftercare through to the final result included; consultation booked separately.
Sydney Hair Transplant: Bankstown, SydneyFUE: $4,990 +GST for fewer than 2,000 grafts; $5,500 +GST for 2,000; $8,000 +GST for 3,000; $10,500 +GST for 4,000; $12,000 +GST for 5,000.Written quote reflects procedure, facility and aftercare; published figures are before GST.
The Crown Clinic: Sydney, Campbelltown, MelbourneFrom $4,990 for 1,500 grafts, approximately 3,000 hairs.Includes GST; says no hidden theatre fees or additional surgical costs; aftercare and medication aren't specified in the price line.
The Knudsen Clinic: page identifies Sydney for robot FUEFUT: $1,540 AUD per 200 grafts; manual FUE: $1,980 AUD per 200 grafts.Additional $1,100 AUD theatre fee, inclusive of GST; the NZ-hosted page's Sydney statement concerns robot FUE, so confirm where the manual FUE and FUT figures apply.
FUE Clinics: Perth“Typically, costs start from $7995, with an average cost around $13,000,” subject to graft count.Complimentary medical-team consultations; procedure inclusions aren't itemized.
Hair and Skin Science: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, AdelaideFUE from $9,500.Procedure inclusions aren't itemized on the pricing page.

These are individual clinics' figures. Published FUE hair transplant prices vary by graft count, technique and staffing model. Gro's band and the average stated by FUE Clinics describe their own pricing, not an Australian market average.

Graft count changes which row you can use. Hair Doctors also lists nurse FUE from $5,999 for up to 1,500 grafts and $10,999 for up to 4,000, while its doctor implanter-pen table lists $11,999 and $21,999 for those counts.

A clinic page without its own procedure price

Plastic Surgery Queensland says its ARTAS cost is discussed after assessing individual requirements. Its wider Australian cost guidance isn't a quote for treatment there.

Thailand figures from the site's canonical research

Patients report paying ฿36-123 per graft across five Bangkok clinics, covering 31 reports and quotes from 2023 to 2026. Most reports at Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic and Hairsmith fall at ฿65-90 per graft.

For the 2,500-graft comparison, we multiply that narrower range by the graft count: 2,500 x ฿65 = ฿162,500 and 2,500 x ฿90 = ฿225,000. This is arithmetic on reported prices, so ask each clinic for its current quote.

The amounts are converted at the European Central Bank reference rates of 16 October 2026, rounded to the nearest Australian dollar:

Keep those totals separate from clinic-published starting offers. Hairsmith publishes ฿80 per graft as 2025 pricing, and HairTran publishes a ฿102,000 starting price, both read 23 September 2026.

CosmoPrime's visible Thai price table lists FUE from ฿79,990 for 2,500 grafts, read 17 October 2026. That is a starting package offer, with a different basis from the reported per-graft comparison above.

Our Thailand clinic cost guide gives the wider price detail. For this decision, use the graft count and technique in your Australian assessment to request the Bangkok quote, including any extra charges.

Medicare, private insurance and payment questions

MBS Online item 45560 describes hair transplantation for alopecia of congenital or traumatic origin or disease, “excluding male pattern baldness.” Alopecia means hair loss; this item's exclusion matters if you're considering a transplant for pattern hair loss.

That wording doesn't exclude every possible hair transplantation procedure from Medicare. It also doesn't establish your eligibility under the item, which needs to be checked for your circumstances.

For private cover, PrivateHealth.gov.au says services outside the Medicare Benefits Schedule, including elective cosmetic surgery, “are only covered by private hospital insurance to a limited extent or may not be covered at all, depending on the policy.”

Get your fund's answer before subtracting an insurance payment from the cost.

Ask about the procedure and any separately billed hospital or theatre charges. Our payment and financing guide covers the payment questions to resolve alongside the clinic quote.

What each quoted price includes

Hair Doctors includes anesthetic, facility fees and aftercare, but books consultation separately. Sydney Hair Transplant says its written quote reflects procedure, facility and aftercare, while the figures on its page still need GST added.

Knudsen makes its theatre fee an additional charge. Crown explicitly includes GST and says there are no hidden theatre fees or added surgical costs, but its price line doesn't specify medication or aftercare.

DDHTC and FUE Clinics don't itemize procedure inclusions on the pages above. So ask them to put those details into the quote.

On the Thai side, HairTran and Hairsmith say the implanter pen is included at their FUE price. A pen-based label alone therefore doesn't give you a consistent way to compare a surcharge across clinics.

Keep accommodation, transfers, medication, follow-up and any revision terms as separate quote questions. Don't count an item as paid for just because the clinic uses the word “package.”

A worked Sydney, Melbourne and Perth trip cost to Bangkok

We use the same 2,500-graft Bangkok treatment calculation for all three departures: A$6,988 to A$9,676. The table adds only airfare; accommodation, meals, local transport and insurance still need prices.

The Thai Airways Sydney, Melbourne and Perth route pages publish the round-trip economy fares below, read 18 October 2026. The airline says fares were collected within 24 hours and may no longer be available when booked.

DeparturePublished round-trip economy fareTreatment plus fare, lower endTreatment plus fare, upper end
SydneyFrom A$1,071A$6,988 + A$1,071 = A$8,059A$9,676 + A$1,071 = A$10,747
MelbourneFrom A$1,067A$6,988 + A$1,067 = A$8,055A$9,676 + A$1,067 = A$10,743
PerthFrom A$853A$6,988 + A$853 = A$7,841A$9,676 + A$853 = A$10,529

These are treatment-plus-airfare subtotals.

Our stay assumption is 7-10 days for planning. HairTran's whole-trip figure is two weeks, so leave room for a longer stay and its accommodation costs; neither figure is personal clearance to fly or return to work.

Use the Thailand stay-length guide when discussing dates with the clinic.

Compare the same graft count

At up to 2,500 grafts, Hair Doctors in Sydney publishes $7,999 for nurse FUE and $15,999 for doctor implanter-pen treatment. Those figures include GST, anesthetic, facility fees and aftercare, with consultation booked separately.

The Sydney-to-Bangkok subtotal of A$8,059 to A$10,747 already exceeds the nurse FUE figure. It falls below the doctor implanter-pen figure before you add the remaining travel costs.

That comparison changes with the staff model, even at the same Australian clinic. Ask both clinics to name the procedure and staff in the quote.

For Melbourne and Perth, use the route subtotal alongside your own clinic's 2,500-graft quote. So add domestic travel if you use the Sydney clinic instead.

Your personal break-even line

Start with your Australian same-graft quote and subtract the Bangkok treatment-plus-airfare subtotal. So the amount left must cover accommodation and other trip costs before you have a cash saving.

Then subtract your own value of days away from work, if any. Use the difference in time away between the two options, and keep any unpaid income separate from cash paid to the clinic or airline.

For the Sydney example, the nurse FUE quote leaves no positive difference before lodging. The doctor implanter-pen quote leaves room for additional costs, but that room is only useful once you've priced them and accepted the staffing and follow-up arrangements.

If the remaining amount is zero or negative, the Bangkok option doesn't save money under your inputs. You might still prefer a particular clinician or technique. The budget should show what that choice costs you.

What Australian patients say

Treatment in Australia

Rui, a Melbourne patient treated in Sydney, posted on Hair Restoration Network on 22 May 2021 for readers “especially those based in Australia.” Their account reported a historical $5k quote for 700-1,000 grafts. They said they had expected the doctor to be more involved; the doctor oversaw while technicians did the work.

That account gives you two questions to resolve before paying: what graft count does the quote cover, and who performs the work? Use the clinic's current written figure for your budget.

Australians traveling to Bangkok

EasyRoader wrote on Hair Restoration Network on 23 March 2024: “I stayed on for another 4 days and went back every day for washing and laser treatment.” The poster said forum comments had steered them away from treatment locally in Australia.

EasyRoader used those extra days for return clinic visits. So ask which appointments your clinic expects before booking the flight home.

KC_Aus posted on Hair Restoration Network on 3 February 2024: “I am a medical professional from Australia. This is my second hair transplant procedure in Thailand.” Their thread describes a repeat trip, which is relevant if you're weighing how much travel you're willing to arrange.

defiance79's Hair Restoration Network account, posted 29 September 2023, says they “arrived at 7am and left around 4pm.” They described a four-day stay for checks, so the procedure day and the stay afterward were separate parts of that trip.

Travel, visa and follow-up planning

Smartraveller's Thailand advice says: “Exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand overall due to security and safety risks.” Its medical-tourism advice includes: “Avoid discount and uncertified medical establishments. Their standards can be poor.”

Smartraveller's medical tourism page says: “Before you go, research the destination, doctor, hospital and procedure.” It also says: “Basic travel insurance policies rarely cover medical tourism.”

So ask the insurer about the purpose of your trip and the procedure before buying a policy. A policy name or the fact that it covers Thailand doesn't answer that question.

Tourism exemption and your purpose of travel

Australia is on the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs' 60-country list for the 30-day tourism exemption, effective from 15 September 2026. The ministry says the exemptions “apply to travel for tourism purposes only” and other purposes require the relevant visa category in its briefing.

Confirm the appropriate entry category for your planned treatment. The tourism exemption isn't a medical visa length.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Doha says visitors under the exemption must possess cash equivalent to 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family. It says an extension is at the immigration officer's discretion, with the application made before the permitted stay ends.

Agree on follow-up before paying

Ask the Bangkok clinic to name the visits it expects before departure and the contact for questions after you return to Australia. Get the arrangements for an in-person assessment in writing too, including where it would happen and who would charge for it.

For an Australian clinic, ask the same questions about included appointments and their location. An Australian address only saves travel if the appointments are somewhere you can reasonably reach.

Which option suits which reader

An Australian clinic can suit you if your budget covers a matching quote and you need follow-up close to home. It also deserves consideration when time off work is tight, particularly if travel costs would absorb the difference in treatment prices.

Bangkok can suit you if a named clinic offers the procedure you want and the full trip fits your budget. You also need enough time for the clinic's agreed stay and a follow-up plan that works after you return.

Graft count can change the comparison. A starting offer for 1,500 grafts doesn't answer what 3,000 will cost. So use the count in your assessment for both quotes.

If technique is your priority, compare the clinic's named procedure and staff roles before comparing totals. If in-person follow-up is your priority, work out where you'd attend and how often you'd be willing to travel.

Questions to put beside every quote

Ask each clinic to answer these alongside the price:

ANDYMAL raised the units problem on Hair Restoration Network on 10 January 2022, saying the “hairs rather than grafts” language confused them. Keep the unit beside every figure when comparing your quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hair transplant cost in Australia?

Published examples include Gro's “From AUD $12,000+” and DDHTC's starting price of $8,500 including GST for up to 2,000 grafts. These are named clinic figures; compare the same graft count and inclusions before choosing.

How much is 3,000 grafts of hair in Australia?

Sydney Hair Transplant publishes $8,000 +GST for 3,000 FUE grafts. Ask for a written quote naming grafts, technique and who performs the work.

Does Medicare cover hair transplants?

MBS item 45560 explicitly excludes male pattern baldness. It describes hair transplantation for alopecia of congenital or traumatic origin or disease, so don't treat that exclusion as a statement about every possible transplant. Check the proposed procedure with your clinician and any private health fund before budgeting for a benefit.

Are there hidden fees in a hair transplant procedure?

Knudsen lists an additional $1,100 AUD theatre fee, and Sydney Hair Transplant's listed prices are before GST. Hair Doctors books consultation separately. Ask for a final written total and an itemized list of anything you'll pay separately.

How long should I stay in Bangkok, and who handles follow-up after I fly home?

Our planning assumption is 7-10 days, while HairTran's whole-trip figure is two weeks. Your clinic needs to set the dates for your case and name the follow-up contact after you return. Confirm the pre-departure appointments, remote contact arrangements and where an in-person assessment would happen before booking flights.
