Hair Transplant Cost per Graft vs Per Hair in Thailand
A patient comparing hair transplants in Thailand visited three Bangkok doctors and reported quotes of 116,000, 216,000 and 310,000 baht. Their r/HairTransplants post described estimates of 2,100 to 2,700 grafts and asked why one quote was so much cheaper.
The pricing unit matters. A per-graft price counts groups of hairs; a per-hair price counts each hair separately. To compare either with a package, calculate the total for the assessed graft count and the same included care, then divide by that count.
Quotes also differ because of the clinician's assessment, technique, inclusions and date.
What "per graft" and "per hair" actually mean
What a graft is: a follicular unit of 1 to 4 hairs
A graft is a natural cluster of hairs, also called a follicular unit. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) describes these clusters as containing one to four hairs.
FUE stands for follicular unit excision, where individual follicular units are removed for transplantation. A quote for a number of grafts therefore doesn't describe the same number of individual hairs.
Hairsmith says, "On average, most grafts contain 2 hairs." It also says some clinics count hairs and others count grafts, so ask which unit appears on your quote.
Why a per-hair quote looks cheap but can total far more
A lower per-hair number can be multiplied by many more units. At an average of two hairs per graft, the number of billable hairs is twice the number of grafts.
That means a per-hair rate must be half the per-graft rate to produce the same total at that assumed ratio. If it's more than half, the per-hair quote costs more for the same graft count, before differences in included care.
| What you want to compare | Calculation |
|---|---|
| Per-hair rate as a per-graft equivalent | Per-hair rate x expected hairs per graft |
| Per-graft rate as a per-hair equivalent | Per-graft rate / expected hairs per graft |
| Hair count as a graft estimate | Hair count / expected hairs per graft |
| Total under per-hair billing | Per-hair rate x total billable hairs |
Multiply the rate to get a per-graft equivalent, and divide the hair count to get grafts. The ratio varies by person and by graft.
So ask the clinic for its expected ratio for your case before treating the conversion as a quote.
One Bangkok patient posted an operative report with 3,989 grafts and 9,314 hairs on r/HairTransplants. Their report lists an average of 2.34 hairs per graft.
Those counts describe that patient's procedure. Using two hairs per graft for their bill would have counted fewer hairs than their report recorded.
We found no Thai clinic page that publishes a per-hair rate. For a quote you receive, use the clinic's stated hair count and charging terms.
How per-graft pricing works in practice
The per-graft rate, and why it falls as the graft count rises
Some pricing schedules lower the rate for larger graft counts. Hairsmith publishes 80 baht per graft for 1,000 grafts or more and 90 baht below 1,000 (2025 pricing, read 15 October 2026).
Check whether a new rate applies to the entire procedure or only to grafts above a threshold. Those rules produce different totals, even when the quote prints the same rate beside the higher count.
A minimum charge also changes the calculation. If the clinic sets one, multiplying a small graft count by its advertised rate might produce a figure below the amount it will charge.
Ask for the total at your assessed graft count.
A lower unit rate for a larger session doesn't by itself mean a lower procedure bill. So have the clinic show the calculation, including its minimum and any rate changes.
The two pricing models: per-graft vs a fixed or package price
The ISHRS says most surgeons charge per graft, while a few charge a set amount for the procedure based on a projected graft range. A fixed total needs that range beside it before you can compare it with a per-graft quote.
With a package, ask how many grafts it covers and what happens above the cap. Also ask what happens if the assessed count is below the package allowance.
For a per-session quote, get the number of sessions in the proposed plan. Ask what each session covers and whether another session would carry another fee.
Dividing a package by its maximum allowance can make its effective rate look lower than it would at your assessed count. So use the count proposed for you, and keep the package's total visible beside the calculated rate.
How many grafts you need, and how that sets the total
Graft count by hair-loss stage (Norwood)
Ask the surgeon for the graft estimate for your case, even if you've already discussed your hair loss stage.
Write down the low and high estimates the clinic gives you. A rate needs that count before you can calculate the procedure total, and a package needs it before you know whether the allowance covers the proposed work.
Why two quotes for "the same procedure" carry different graft counts
Keep an estimated count, a final procedure count and a billed count in separate fields. Ask the clinic how it sets the final count and which number determines your bill.
When clinics propose different ranges, retain both plans. You can also ask them to price the same count where they consider it appropriate, so you can see the effect of the charging method without assuming the clinical plans are identical.
How technique changes the per-graft rate
Keep the procedure label and shaving plan beside the price.
Ask each clinic to state which version its quote covers before comparing rates. A price for standard work doesn't tell you the price for keeping your hair unshaven.
What is included in the price (and what is not)
Hidden fees and add-ons that raise the final bill
A Bangkok Hair Clinic patient listed doctor and nurse fees, antibiotics, six months of oral minoxidil, pain relief and vitamins as included. Their r/HairTransplants account also included a list of supplies: shampoo, gel, wound care, a hat, a bandana and pre- and post-operative care booklets.
Another Bangkok patient reported an initial quote including five days of aftercare, washing and red-light therapy. Their r/HairTransplants post also listed one hyperbaric oxygen session and one platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection.
Those inclusion lists give you items to ask about. Get your own clinic's list in writing, including the duration of medication and follow-up care.
Separate optional treatments from the procedure total. Ask the treating clinician which treatments are appropriate for you before adding them just because another package includes them.
For accommodation or transport, record the nights and journeys covered. Our Thailand packages guide helps compare those arrangements with bookings you make yourself.
How to compare quotes without getting misled
Red flags in pricing and promises
A quote needs a billing unit, a graft estimate, inclusions and a rule for calculating the final bill. If any are missing, ask for a written breakdown before treating the figure as your budget.
A low price alone doesn't establish poor work. Ask who removes the grafts, who places them and who oversees the procedure, regardless of the amount quoted.
Keep those answers beside the price when comparing clinics.
How to normalize two quotes to the same basis
We compare the total for the proposed work before calculating an effective price per graft. This keeps a package's fixed fee and a per-hair quote's larger unit count visible.
1. Record each clinic's assessed graft range and procedure label. Keep different clinical estimates separate. 2. Convert a per-hair rate using the clinic's expected hairs-per-graft ratio. Ask for the total hair count if that is what determines the bill. 3. Apply the minimum, rate bands or package cap. For a session fee, include every session in the quoted plan. 4. Match the included care. Add separately priced items you need, and keep elective extras on their own lines. 5. Divide that comparable total by the graft count used to calculate it. Label the result an effective per-graft cost if it came from a package or session fee.
Don't subtract an invented value for bundled medication, aftercare or a hotel. If the clinic won't itemize an inclusion, leave it in the total and note the difference beside the competing quote.
An effective per-graft cost helps compare prices. The separate inclusion list still tells you what that amount buys.
Run the quote-range test before you compare totals
Calculate each quote at both ends of its graft estimate.
Use the low count for one calculation and the high count for the other. If the range crosses a package cap or rate boundary, calculate at that boundary too, because the charging rule changes there.
Copy this field list for each clinic. It keeps the required information together without assuming that both clinics proposed the same graft range.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Procedure and sessions | Exact procedure label, shaving plan and sessions covered |
| Low and high graft counts | Both ends of the clinic's assessed estimate |
| Charging unit | Per graft, per hair, package or session |
| Hair-count assumption | Expected hairs per graft and billable hair count, if relevant |
| Minimum or rate threshold | Minimum fee and where the rate changes |
| Package cap | Included graft allowance and rule above it |
| Price above the cap | Extra-graft rate or additional session fee |
| Low-count total | Full calculation at the lower estimate |
| High-count total | Full calculation at the upper estimate |
| Care included | Medication, aftercare and any accommodation or transport |
| Extras | Required charges and optional treatments, listed separately |
| Final billing rule | How the final count changes the bill and when payment is due |
A Bangkok Hair Clinic patient wrote: "Fee was 129,000THB for first 1500 grafts and additional 75THB per graft." Their r/HairTransplants post gave an estimated total of 226,500 to 264,000 baht and reported 2,725 grafts at the procedure.
The table applies that patient's reported formula at its included-count boundary. This is our calculation, not a reconstruction of the final invoice.
| Count used | Calculation from the patient's quoted formula | Calculated amount |
|---|---|---|
| First 1,500 grafts | Fixed first tier | THB 129,000, about US$3,890 |
Dollars at THB 33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).
The additional-graft rate applies only after the first tier. Multiplying it by the entire graft count would omit part of the quoted fee.
For your own quotes, run each clinic's formula at its stated low and high counts. Ask the clinic to confirm those totals and explain what happens if the final count falls outside the estimate.
What patients report: real quotes and the math they do
When the graft count moves on the day
A Bangkok patient wrote that they had expected 1,800 to 2,200 grafts but received 2,700 after assessment on the day. In their r/HairTransplants post, they said: "after assessing everything properly on the day, we ended up going higher."
The reported count exceeded the earlier high estimate. Ask how the clinic would discuss a revised plan and price with you before proceeding, including whether an extra-graft rate or another band would apply.
A low-to-high calculation helps you budget for the stated range; the written rule covers what happens outside it. So keep the clinic's answer with your original quote.

Our FUE cost guide compares published per-graft rates in Thailand and other countries. Keep flights, accommodation and meals separate from the effective surgical price per graft, so you can see both the procedure comparison and the trip budget.
Planning your budget and payment
Ask when the deposit and balance are due, whether the deposit comes off the procedure total, and how a changed graft count affects the balance. Confirm the accepted payment method and any fee before arranging payment, so you know what you pay.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a graft and a hair?
A graft is a follicular unit containing one to four hairs, as described by the ISHRS. A per-graft quote counts those groups, while a per-hair quote counts the individual hairs within them. Ask which unit the clinic is billing before comparing rates.
How do I compare a per-hair quote with a per-graft quote?
Multiply the per-hair rate by the clinic's expected hairs per graft. That gives an approximate per-graft equivalent, which you can apply to the assessed graft count. Hairsmith says most grafts contain two hairs, but use the clinic's estimate for your case and match the included care.
Why is one quote so much cheaper than the others?
Check the counting unit and assessed graft count, then look for a minimum, package cap or separate charges. The Bangkok patient comparing three consultations raised this question on r/HairTransplants. Ask each clinic to show its total at both ends of its estimate and state who performs each step.
Does a package quote make comparison easier?
Only when you know the included graft count, care and charge above the cap. A Bangkok Hair Clinic patient's quote on r/HairTransplants charged 129,000 baht for the first 1,500 grafts and 75 baht for each graft after that. Divide a package by your assessed count, and label the result an effective rate rather than the clinic's advertised per-graft price.
How can I check whether the quote calculation is right?
Write out the formula using the quoted unit and count, then apply its minimum, tiers and extras. A commenter questioned a clinic's calculation on r/HairTransplants. Ask the clinic to show the arithmetic in its billing currency before converting the total into your own currency.
