eSIM Thailand: Get Internet Before Your Hair Transplant Trip
A traveler arrived in China with no signal and asked Pantip for help. For a hair transplant in Thailand, we'd arrange mobile data before boarding.
Buy and install a Thailand eSIM, a digital SIM that needs no physical card, before departure. On landing, turn it on, select it for mobile data and follow its roaming instructions. For a stay of about a week, compare plans that run for seven days.
The traveler wrote on Pantip, translated from Thai: "I am now in China and have no signal at all, and I believe International Roaming has not been turned on."
Clinics cannot pay to be listed or ranked higher on AsiaPatient.
The short answer: buy a Thailand eSIM before you fly
Install your eSIM while you still have a stable internet connection.
Airalo says you can install and connect its eSIM in advance outside the coverage area, ready to use on arrival. So you can handle installation before the flight instead of starting it after landing.
Buying, installing and turning on the plan are separate steps. Holafly says its Thailand plan begins when you reach the destination and turn on the eSIM, so follow the activation instructions for the plan you buy.
We'd make the phone check before paying. Then choose a plan that covers your arrival through departure, using the itinerary you've agreed with the clinic.
What an eSIM is (and the airport SIM alternative)
An eSIM is an embedded SIM: it works without a removable physical card. Nomad describes it as working like a traditional SIM, with a compatible device required.
For getting connected on arrival, its advantage is the preparation you can finish at home. You can install the travel eSIM before flying and keep the arrival instructions with your travel documents.
| Choice | What you arrange | What to check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| eSIM installed before departure | A digital SIM on a compatible phone | Phone compatibility, activation timing and which line will carry data |
| Physical tourist SIM bought after landing | A physical SIM card for the phone | Whether the phone accepts the card, what the plan includes and its setup instructions |
If you're considering an airport SIM, check the operator's purchase and registration requirements before travel. Ask for the full plan terms so you can compare the same duration and data allowance with an eSIM.
Will it work on my phone?
Check the exact phone model before choosing a plan. Holafly lists recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones among compatible devices, but a brand name alone doesn't settle whether yours supports eSIM.
So look up your model's specification and check it against the eSIM company's compatibility information. If you want to keep your home line active too, check that arrangement as well.
Dual eSIM: keep your home eSIM and add the travel one
Check how many eSIMs your phone can have active at once. Your home line might already use an eSIM.
Apple lists support for two active eSIMs on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Use your own model's specification to confirm whether you can keep the home eSIM active while using the Thailand eSIM for data.
Before you fly: buy and install the eSIM
Choose Thailand coverage and a service period that fits your travel dates. Read when the plan starts before installing it, especially if you're buying well before departure.
Holafly says it emails the eSIM after purchase and allows installation before the trip. Airalo tells travelers to install with a stable internet connection.
So we'd do this at home, with the order email open and time to follow the instructions. Keep those instructions accessible for arrival, including which settings need changing then.
Install it on your phone (iPhone and Android steps)
Nomad publishes these routes into the phone's SIM settings. Follow the installation instructions supplied with the plan you bought.
| Phone | Published settings path |
|---|---|
| iPhone | Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Add Cellular Plan or Add Data Plan |
| Google Pixel | Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs |
| Samsung | Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager |
For a plan delivered with a QR code, use that scannable code during installation. Keep the instructions beside you so you can distinguish adding the eSIM from activating its data service.
Print the QR code as a backup
Holafly recommends carrying a printed QR code and says installation needs internet access. Save an offline copy or print it before you leave.
A saved code gives you access to the installation details if you can't open the original email. You'll still need an internet connection to complete installation.
The moment you land: turn it on
Airalo says the eSIM must be switched on and selected for data when you're in its coverage area. Check both settings before assuming the plan has failed.
1. Turn on the travel eSIM. 2. Select it as the mobile-data line. 3. Follow the plan's instructions for data roaming on that line.
Then try opening a page or sending a message over mobile data. We'd check the connection before relying on it to access travel details away from Wi-Fi.
Turn on data roaming
Holafly and Nomad tell customers to enable data roaming for their travel eSIMs. Apply that instruction to the travel line, keeping track of which SIM you're changing.
One traveler described separate settings on Pantip, translated from Thai: data roaming off on their main AIS line and on for their travel eSIM. They also kept Wi-Fi Calling on for the AIS line.
Use your purchased plan's instructions for your setup. Check the home carrier's terms before relying on calls or texts from that line abroad.
Keep your home SIM for calls and texts (dual SIM)
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can keep the home SIM while using the travel eSIM for data. Holafly describes retaining the physical SIM for calls and text messages, with its eSIM selected for internet use.
If you need your usual number during the trip, check how that line will work in Thailand before leaving. Ask the home carrier about calls and text messages as well as data.
Don't get a surprise roaming bill
Select the travel eSIM as your mobile-data line.
Nomad warns customers to change that setting to avoid home-line roaming costs. Check the selected line after setup, even if both SIMs remain active.
Keep the home carrier's charges separate from the travel plan's price when budgeting. Buying an eSIM doesn't establish what your home carrier charges for services you continue using.
Your contact plan for the trip
Save the clinic's published contact details and your travel arrangements offline. Keep them somewhere you can open without loading a website or searching your inbox.
Before you board
Save your booking record and hotel address, plus any transfer instructions you've received. Our Thailand booking guide covers the separate steps for arranging the procedure.
Confirm which contact details the clinic wants you to use during the trip. Keep that answer with your booking record so you don't have to find it after landing.
After you land
Check mobile data before relying on an online map or opening your booking messages. Keep the saved hotel address and arrival instructions accessible while you get connected.
Another traveler on Pantip reported that a roaming package failed, leaving them unable to use maps or make payments. That account, translated from Thai, is a reason to keep arrival details available offline too.
During the recovery stay
Keep the agreed clinic contact route available throughout your stay. For questions about communicating in English, use our guide to English-speaking hair transplant clinics.
For the arrangements after the procedure and once you're home, see follow-up care from Thailand. Keep the clinic's instructions with your contact details, including how it wants you to raise questions.
How much data do you need for a hair-transplant trip?
For a stay of about a week, we'd start by comparing 7-day plans. Airalo and Holafly list Thailand packages labeled unlimited, including 7-day and 10-day options.
Choose the service period around the full itinerary. Count from when you need data on arrival through the day you leave Thailand.
A one-week stay: 7-day or 10-day packages
If your itinerary runs longer than seven days, compare 10-day options. Confirm when the service period starts and ends against your flight dates before paying.
Duration tells you how long the plan lasts. So read the data terms separately, including any speed conditions and the allowance for sharing a connection with another device.
Before choosing a fixed allowance, consider whether you expect to use mobile data mainly on your phone or also share it with a laptop. Check the plan's limits for that use rather than assuming its unlimited label covers everything.
What it costs in Thailand
Compare the checkout price for the duration you need on the operator's own page. The Thailand plan pages from Airalo and Holafly let you review the available durations and data terms before buying.
Check the currency beside the amount and whether ordinary calls or text messages are included. If you're also considering an airport SIM, compare those same features for your full stay.
Top-ups and add-ons if you run out
Airalo says that, in many cases, you can top up your eSIM instead of buying a new one. Nomad describes buying an add-on to increase data volume.
So check what your chosen plan allows before relying on a top-up. If your trip gets longer, confirm that the purchase covers the extra dates as well as any extra data you need.
Good to know
Local phone numbers and WhatsApp
Holafly says its Thailand eSIM is data-only, without a local number for ordinary calls or text messages. It says internet-based apps such as WhatsApp can still work through the data connection.
Check the plan description if you need a local number. A working internet connection doesn't tell you whether the plan includes ordinary phone service.
Hotspot / share the connection
A personal hotspot shares your phone's data connection with another device. An AIS support reply on Pantip, translated from Thai, says hotspot sharing is allowed for personal use, such as sharing with a friend or connecting your own computer. That answer is about AIS's own plans, not a travel eSIM.
Check your travel plan's own hotspot terms before relying on it for a laptop or companion's phone. Look for both permission to share and any separate allowance.
The checklist (short version)
- Confirm that your phone supports the eSIM and SIM arrangement you want.
- Buy and install the Thailand plan before departure on a stable internet connection.
- Keep the installation QR code accessible offline.
- On landing, turn on the travel eSIM and select it for mobile data.
- Follow the plan's data-roaming instructions for the travel line.
- Check that the home line isn't selected for mobile data.
Frequently asked questions
My eSIM has no signal abroad. Should data roaming be on?
Follow the plan's instructions. Holafly and Nomad tell customers to enable data roaming on their travel eSIMs; also check that the eSIM is on and selected for data. If it still won't connect, contact the company you bought it from with the plan details and the message shown on your phone.
My eSIM says no service. Will it receive bank verification texts?
Check which number should receive the code and whether that line has service. A one-time password, or OTP, sent by text needs a plan that receives text messages; Holafly says its Thailand data-only plan has no local number for ordinary calls or texts. Ask your home carrier how your existing number will receive messages in Thailand.
I registered my eSIM but got no confirmation text. What should I do?
Check the delivery method in your order instructions. Holafly, for example, says it sends the eSIM by email after purchase. If your order says a confirmation text should arrive and it hasn't, contact the company with the order details before assuming installation is complete.
Should I use roaming, an eSIM or buy a SIM on arrival?
For a compatible phone, we'd buy and install an eSIM before departure so setup is done before landing. Compare your home carrier's roaming terms or a physical SIM if those better fit your phone and calling needs. Check the full duration, data allowance and activation instructions for whichever option you choose.
