Sun Exposure After Hair Transplant: How Long to Avoid It and When Sunscreen Can Go On
Twelve days after a 5,400-graft transplant, one r/HairTransplants poster was carrying a black umbrella for shade. "Does that actually help protect the grafts? And is it really necessary?" they asked.
Our hair transplant guide covers the whole process, and this page covers the sun. HairTran, a Bangkok clinic, tells patients to keep direct sun off the scalp for the first 14 days and to put no hair products on it for two weeks.
So for the first two weeks, your sun protection is shade and a loose cover your clinic approves, not sunscreen. Sunscreen comes later, once your own clinic says the skin has healed, and HairTran asks patients to avoid sunburn for three months.
Why Sun Is Harmful to a Healing Scalp
After surgery, the recipient area is covered in tiny scabs while the skin underneath closes. The ISHRS says those scabs usually stay one to two weeks, and that surgeons set different aftercare policies.
HairTran's home page tells patients: "Protect your scalp from direct sunlight for the first 14 days to prevent irritation and discoloration."
Its FUE page puts it a little differently: "Limit direct sun exposure on the scalp for 14 days to reduce irritation and risk of damage."
Discoloration means the skin on the treated area changes color. HairTran doesn't say how often that happens or how long it lasts.
CosmoPrime, another Bangkok clinic, lists what to keep away from the transplanted area early on in its Thai-language aftercare article. The list includes heat, heavy sweating, rubbing, scratching and products that irritate the skin (our translation).
How Long Should You Avoid Direct Sun After a Hair Transplant?
HairTran gives two windows, and they cover different things.
The first is 14 days with no direct sun. HairTran's Thai home page says to avoid contact with direct sunlight during the first 14 days (our translation).
Its Thai FUE page adds that you shouldn't stay in bright sun for long periods during that time (our translation).
The second window is three months. HairTran's post-operative care page says: "You should avoid sunburn for 3 months and wear a cap or a Hat when you go outdoor."
So the rule changes after two weeks, but it doesn't end. For the first 14 days you keep direct sun off the scalp, and through month three you make sure it doesn't burn.
The ISHRS says different surgeons have different policies. It tells patients to follow their own surgeon's instructions rather than what they read on websites, so if your clinic's sheet gives a longer window, follow your clinic.
Sun is one part of a longer recovery. Our recovery timeline covers how the transplanted hair sheds and regrows after that.
The Timeline in Three Windows
| When | What the clinic material says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 14 | No direct sun. No hair products on the treated area | HairTran |
| Days 4 to 14 | Scabs gradually flake off (one to two weeks per the ISHRS) | Bangkok Hair Clinic, Thai page; ISHRS |
| After two weeks | Ask your clinic when the recipient skin has healed enough | ISHRS: aftercare policies vary by surgeon |
| Up to three months | Avoid sunburn. Wear a cap or hat outdoors | HairTran |
Hat vs Sunscreen: Which Protects Better?
For the first two weeks, there's nothing to choose between. HairTran rules out hair products in that period, so cover and shade are the protection you have.
Both clinics give patients something to wear. HairTran says it provides a bandana for when you go outdoors.
CosmoPrime says it gives patients a breathable cloth hat to protect against dust and sunlight, and recommends wearing it before leaving home (our translation).
What matters is pressure. CosmoPrime's Thai 10 rules page says not to wear a motorcycle helmet or a cap that presses on the wound for two weeks.
A wide-brimmed or cloth hat is fine on that page only if it doesn't touch or press the transplanted area. The English version says the same in short: loose, soft hats that don't touch the transplanted area.
Which hats work and when a fitted cap is allowed are covered in our guide to wearing a hat after a hair transplant.
After two weeks, sunscreen becomes an option only once your clinic clears it. HairTran still asks for a cap or hat outdoors until month three, so the cover stays in the plan either way.
When Is It Safe to Start Using Sunscreen on Your Scalp?
HairTran's post-operative instruction is direct: "No hair products during this 2 weeks, including topical minoxidil, it could irritate your skin."
Sunscreen goes on the treated skin like any other product. For those two weeks it stays off, unless your surgeon tells you otherwise.
After two weeks, the answer belongs to your clinic.
Avoiding Sun Until the Incisions Heal
Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai home page describes days 1 to 14 as the scab stage. It says the scabs gradually flake off from day 4 to day 14 (our translation).
Until then, the plan is shade and a loose cover. Keep the sun off and keep products off.
Scabs coming away shows the skin is healing. Whether sunscreen can go on is still your clinic's call, and our guide to hair transplant scabs covers how to wash them off safely.
Which Sunscreen, and How Strong
One r/HairTransplants poster asked: "How long after HT can I wear sun cream/sunscreen and is there a type I should use to not cause issues with my scalp?"
No Thai clinic page we read names sunscreens, gives an SPF number or describes an application method for a healing transplant scalp. So we don't recommend one.
Ask your clinic these before you fly home, while you can still ask in person:
- When can sunscreen go on the recipient area?
- Which product do you approve, and is there an SPF you want me to use?
- How do I apply it without rubbing the grafts?
- Does the donor area need anything different?
- What should I do if my scalp burns?
What Happens If You Get a Sunburn on Your Transplant Area?
HairTran's home page warning about early sun names irritation and discoloration. No clinic page or study we read says what a burn does to the grafts themselves, the hair follicles that were moved.
Patient accounts show what people notice. A Bald Truth Talk member wrote that they could still see a slight difference in tone between the recipient area and their forehead.
In the umbrella thread, a commenter described the concern as UV-induced hyperpigmentation, meaning darker patches of skin, or a sunburn on delicate new skin.
If your scalp burns, or you see redness, peeling, pain or a color change, contact the clinic that did your surgery.
Tell them when it happened and how long you were out. A forum thread can't tell you whether your grafts are fine.
Practical Sun Protection Tips for the First Few Weeks
Plan the first 14 days around shade.
HairTran's rule is no direct sun in that period.
Wear what the clinic gives you.
HairTran provides a bandana, and CosmoPrime gives patients a breathable cloth hat.
Nothing that presses.
CosmoPrime says no motorcycle helmet or pressing cap for two weeks.
No products on the grafts for two weeks.
HairTran's rule covers all hair products, minoxidil included.
Keep heat and sweating to a minimum.
CosmoPrime lists both among the things to keep away early on.
Don't rub or scratch the area.
CosmoPrime lists both.
Avoid sunburn through month three.
HairTran asks for a cap or hat outdoors until then.
Swimming and beach trips aren't settled by the sun rules above. Ask your clinic directly before you plan either.
The full daily routine, from washing to sleeping, is in our hair transplant aftercare guide.
What Thai Clinics Tell Patients About Sun Protection
These are three Bangkok clinics' published pages. We compare what clinics publish and have not visited them.
| Clinic | Direct sun | Products on the scalp | What you wear | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HairTran | None for the first 14 days. Avoid sunburn for 3 months | No hair products for 2 weeks | Bandana provided. Cap or hat outdoors to month 3 | Home, FUE, Post-op care |
| CosmoPrime | No day count given | Keep irritating products away early on | Breathable cloth hat provided. Nothing that presses for 2 weeks | 10 rules (Thai), Aftercare (Thai) |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Not covered on the page we read | Not covered on the page we read | Not covered on the page we read | Home (Thai): scabs flake off days 4 to 14 |
HairTran is the only one of the three that publishes day counts for sun. CosmoPrime's rules focus on what touches the scalp.
Three clinics aren't all of Thailand. The aftercare sheet your clinic gives you on the day is the one to follow.
Patient Reports: What People Did and What Happened
A HairLossTalk poster, two weeks after FUE, wrote: "I was under intense sunlight for about 45 minutes before realising what I had done."
A RealSelf question from another patient was shorter: "Sunburn on scalp 14 days post FUE. What can I do? Help!"
The r/HairTransplants poster with the umbrella was asking a similar question at day 12: is what I'm doing enough?
Each of these posts is a question for strangers. Getting your clinic's sun rules in writing before you leave saves you that thread.
Bottom Line: A Simple Sun Protection Plan for Your Healing Scalp
1. First 14 days: keep direct sun off the scalp. Put no hair products on the graft area, under HairTran's protocol. 2. During that early period: protect the scalp with shade or the loose, non-pressing cover your clinic approves. 3. After two weeks: ask your clinic when sunscreen can touch the recipient area and which product it approves. 4. For three months: HairTran says to avoid sunburn and wear a cap or hat when outdoors. 5. Burn or color change: if the scalp burns or changes color, contact the clinic that did your surgery.

Frequently asked questions
When can I put sunscreen on my scalp after a hair transplant?
HairTran says no hair products for the first two weeks, and sunscreen goes on the treated skin like any other product. The ISHRS says aftercare policies vary between surgeons, so ask your clinic when the recipient skin is ready and which product it approves.
How long should I stay out of direct sun?
HairTran says no direct sun for the first 14 days. Its post-operative care page also says to avoid sunburn for three months and wear a cap or hat outdoors. Your own clinic may set different dates, and its sheet is the one to follow.
Can I wear a hat to keep the sun off?
Yes, if it doesn't press on the grafts. HairTran provides a bandana and CosmoPrime gives patients a breathable cloth hat.
CosmoPrime says no motorcycle helmet or cap that presses on the wound for two weeks. Our hat guide covers which hats work and when.
What should I do if my scalp gets sunburned?
Contact the clinic that did your surgery, and tell them when it happened and how long you were out. HairTran warns that direct sun in the first 14 days can cause irritation and discoloration.
Patients report redness and tone changes after sun.
When do the scabs come off?
The ISHRS says the tiny scabs usually stay one to two weeks. Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai page says they gradually flake off between day 4 and day 14. Scabs coming away is a sign of healing, but sunscreen still waits for your clinic to clear it.
