Stem Cell Hair Restoration in Thailand: What It Actually Is, What It Costs, and Whether It Works
A Reddit commenter on a Bangkok FUE patient's thread, asking whether the stem cell add-on had helped, summed it up in five words: "hope it wasn't wasted money."
Yes, Thai clinics sell treatments under the stem cell label. They are injections or add-ons to surgery, and none of them moves a new supply of follicles into a bald area the way a transplant does. Our hair transplant guide covers the surgery itself.
The poster who started that r/HairTransplants thread had FUE, PRP and stem cells and wrote, "I think the prp and stems helped." So there's no way to tell which part did what.
This page covers what is sold under the label, what the studies show, where the FDA stands, and what Thai clinics publish as prices.
What "Stem Cell Hair Restoration" Actually Means
"Stem cell" on a hair clinic menu is a label for several different treatments. The name alone won't tell you what goes into your scalp.
The treatments grouped under the stem cell label
Four different things show up under or next to this name.
- Scalp-cell micrografting. Absolute Hair Clinic calls its Rigenera Activa treatment a "stem cell injection for hair" (its Thai page, our translation), in which hair roots taken from the back of the head are processed in a Rigenera device and injected into thinning scalp. Bangkok Hair Clinic sells Cell Plus, which uses the same device on live cells taken from the scalp.
- Fat-derived cells. In a 2025 trial, fat was drawn out by lipoaspiration, the cells were grown in a lab and then injected into the scalp. None of the Thai clinic pages below describes this protocol.
- Exosomes. These are tiny vesicles that cells release. Absolute describes exosomes as secreted by stem cells and presents the injection as an add-on to an FUE hair transplant.
- PRP or GFC. Bangkok Hair Clinic says GFC is another name for PRP, made from growth factors concentrated from your own blood. CosmoPrime describes PRP as platelets from your own blood.
The FDA names stem cells, stromal vascular fraction (SVF) from fat and exosomes among the regenerative-medicine products that are sold without approval.
How a follicle transplant differs
A transplant moves hair you already have. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says hair transplant surgery moves healthy hairs on your scalp to areas with thinning hair.
HairTran describes FUE, in Thai, as taking hair roots from the stronger back or sides of the scalp and planting them where hair is thin or lost. Our FUE hair transplant guide walks through that procedure.
The injections aim at something else. They try to get existing follicles to produce thicker hair. Growing brand new follicles is still laboratory work.
How Stem Cell Therapy Is Supposed to Work
Every version rests on the same idea. Cells, or the substances cells release, are meant to send signals that push weakened follicles back toward growth.
The proposed biology
Absolute's exosome page says the treatment targets cell signaling and the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway. That is the clinic's explanation of how it should work.
A mechanism on a clinic page tells you the theory. It doesn't tell you how much hair a patient grows.
The procedure depends on the product
The steps differ a lot between treatments. So a quote that just says "stem cell" leaves out most of what you need to know.
- Rigenera at Absolute and Bangkok Hair Clinic: a small scalp harvest from the back of the head, processing in the device, then injection of the suspension into thinning areas.
- Fat-derived cells in the 2025 trial: fat harvest by lipoaspiration, lab culture of the cells, then injection into the front and top of the scalp.
- PRP or GFC: a blood draw, concentration of platelets and growth factors, then injection.
- Exosomes: Absolute presents the injection as an FUE add-on. Ask where the exosomes come from, because a harvest from you isn't part of the description.
Ask which of these you are being quoted before you compare prices.
What the Research Actually Shows (and What Is Still Experimental)
Most of the exosome work below used mouse models and cell assays. The human studies are few and small.
The small controlled trial of fat-derived cells
Moneib and colleagues ran a randomized controlled trial with 33 patients who had female pattern hair loss. They injected cultured fat-derived stem cells and reported better hair thickness and hair count at weeks 12 and 24.
That is one small study in one group of patients. It didn't show new follicles forming, and it tested a fat-harvest protocol, not the scalp-cell treatments sold in Bangkok.
The 2026 exosome reviews
A 2026 systematic review of exosome therapy for pattern hair loss screened 352 records and included 16 studies. Most of them used mouse models and cell assays.
A second 2026 review says regenerative medicine based on stem cells faces challenges related to standardization and safety.
One more 2026 review reports density changes of 8% to 20% in early human exosome studies. The same review warns that those studies had small samples, retrospective designs, no control groups and inconsistent ways of measuring results.
A Dermatologic Clinics review from April 2026 calls the early clinical data encouraging. It also says more trials are needed to settle dosing and protocols.
Follicle regeneration in the laboratory
A RIKEN paper from February 2026 reports fully functional hair follicles grown in an artificial-skin system and after transplantation into mouse skin.
That is lab and animal work. No clinic can sell it to you.
What the Mahidol review says
A 2026 narrative review from Mahidol University in Thailand covers three cell types under investigation: hair follicle stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.
It presents them as possible future treatments. Its abstract gives no date for when they might reach patients.
Who Is a Good Candidate (and Who Is Not)
For a transplant, the AAD names two requirements. You need enough healthy hair to move, and the thinning area has to be able to grow hair.
No study above sets a rule for who should have stem cell treatments for hair. The controlled trial above covered female pattern hair loss only, so its result can't tell a man with male pattern baldness whether the same fat-derived cell injection will help him.
The useful step is an assessment against the exact product and your diagnosis. Ask the doctor what kind of hair loss you have and why this particular treatment fits it.
An injection doesn't add donor hair. If your donor supply is the limit on a transplant, a stem cell add-on won't change that.
Benefits and Realistic Results
Three outcomes get mixed together in clinic copy. Thicker hair shafts, more hairs counted and brand new follicles are different results, and the human evidence above covers only the first two.
The trial's weeks 12 and 24 were measurement points. They aren't a timetable for when your hair changes.
Clinics publish their own schedules. Bangkok Hair Clinic says Cell Plus results usually show within 90 to 120 days and suggests a repeat every one to two years.
Its English GFC page recommends maintenance injections every four to six months. CosmoPrime says PRP usually takes three to six sessions several weeks apart.
Treat those as questions for the consultation. A repeat schedule tells you what you will pay over time, not how long a result lasts.
Agree with the clinic how progress will be measured before the first session.
Risks and Side Effects
The FDA says unapproved regenerative products, including stem cells, fat-derived cells and exosomes, carry risks. It also says they may be marketed as safe and effective without adequate study.
No source we read gives a complication rate for stem cell hair treatments in Thailand. If a protocol includes a harvest, ask about the risks of the harvest and of the injection separately.
Stem Cell vs PRP vs Minoxidil vs Hair Transplant
The options differ first in what goes into your scalp.
| Option | What it is | What to ask before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Follicle transplant (FUE or FUT) | Surgery that moves healthy existing hairs to thinning areas (AAD) | How many grafts your donor area can supply |
| Rigenera or Cell Plus | Your own scalp cells, processed in a device and injected into thinning scalp | What human evidence supports this protocol |
| Exosomes | Vesicles that cells release, presented in Bangkok as an FUE add-on and sold as a scalp treatment | Where the product comes from and its regulatory category |
| PRP or GFC | Platelets and growth factors concentrated from your own blood | How many sessions, and the total price |
| Minoxidil | A hair-loss medication | How it fits with, or compares to, the injection you're quoted |
Our page on PRP with a hair transplant covers PRP in more detail.
The Regulatory Reality: FDA and What "Investigational" Means
The FDA consumer alert says the only FDA-approved stem cell products are blood-forming cells from umbilical cord blood. It also says there are no FDA-approved exosome products.
The FDA's list of approved cellular and gene therapy products has no product for hair loss, baldness or androgenetic alopecia on it.
The FDA goes further. It says people charged for these products outside a clinical trial are "likely being deceived" and offered a product illegally. That is a statement about US rules, and it doesn't decide what is legal in Thailand.
We found no statement from Thailand's FDA on stem cell or exosome hair treatments. A clinic saying a product is approved isn't the same as seeing the approval.
One Bangkok clinic is open about this. Healthi Life labels its exosome hair therapy "Investigational; outcomes vary by individual."
Ask the clinic for the exact product name, the category it says applies in Thailand, and the official document behind it.
What "Stem Cell" Actually Means on a Thai Clinic Menu
We compare what clinics publish and haven't visited any of them. The offers below were read on each clinic's own page on 17 and 20 October 2026.
| Clinic | Offer | How the clinic describes it |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute Hair Clinic, Bangkok | Rigenera Activa | A "stem cell injection for hair" from your own hair roots, processed in a device and injected |
| Absolute Hair Clinic, Bangkok | Exosome injection with FUE | Vesicles secreted by stem cells, used as an FUE add-on |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Cell Plus Stem Cell Therapy | Live cells from your scalp, processed with the Rigenera device and injected |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | GFC program | Another name for PRP, made from growth factors in your own blood |
| CosmoPrime, Bangkok | PRP | Platelets from your own blood |
Two of the five are PRP. On Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai menu, GFC sits next to Cell Plus, so a reader scanning the menu could take them for the same kind of treatment.
What Stem Cell Hair Restoration Costs in Thailand
Absolute Hair Clinic prices a treatment it calls a stem cell injection. The other rows are related injections Thai clinics price on their own pages.
| Clinic | Treatment | Published price | In dollars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absolute Hair Clinic, Bangkok | Rigenera Activa, which it calls a stem cell injection for hair | ฿75,000 per session (read 20 October 2026) | $2,260 |
| Healthi Life, Bangkok | Exosome Hair Therapy, labelled "Investigational; outcomes vary by individual." | ฿35,000 per session (read 20 October 2026) | $1,060 |
| Absolute Hair Clinic, Bangkok | PRP | ฿20,000 per injection, or ฿50,000 for three monthly injections | $600 / $1,510 |
| Bangkok Hospital Phuket | PRP hair package, no session count stated | ฿19,550 (read 20 October 2026) | $590 |
The Absolute PRP prices were read on 9 October 2026. Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).
Bangkok Hair Clinic's Cell Plus page and CosmoPrime's PRP page show no price. We found no published Thai price for a fat-derived cell treatment.
The Rigenera price is per session. So ask how many sessions the clinic plans for you before you compare it with anything else.
Before You Book a Flight: Identify the Protocol
The Thai clinic pages we read don't publish flight advice, an observation period or a remote follow-up process for these treatments. So the protocol, and what happens after you fly home, has to come from the clinic in writing.
Injection-only quote: what to get in writing before travel
Ask what is injected or applied, and where it comes from. Ask whether it contains living cells.
Ask which doctor will assess your scalp in person, and when. Ask how the clinic plans to review you before you fly home.
Fat or tissue harvesting quote: what the clinician must explain
A harvest adds a second procedure to the trip. Absolute's and Bangkok Hair Clinic's Rigenera treatments take tissue from the back of your scalp. Fat harvest appears in the published trial, not on the Thai clinic pages we read.
Ask where the harvest site is, and whether the harvest is done under local anesthesia. Ask which doctor is responsible for the harvest and which for the injections.
Ask for the aftercare for the harvest site. Ask the treating doctor when you can fly, based on your own procedure.
The records and follow-up plan to take home
Ask for these in writing before you pay:
- The product name and source, and whether it came from you or a donor
- What was done, including where it was injected
- Medicines and aftercare instructions
- A named contact if something goes wrong after you leave
- How follow-up works once you are back home
These are questions for the clinic.
What Patients Say: The "Gimmick or Worth It?" Question
A patient on r/HairTransplants was offered two FUE quotes, one with "stem cell" added at extra cost. They asked, "Is this a gimmick? Or is this worth it?"
One reply said, "Not really worth it if its a giant percentage of the HT cost." Another called it a gimmick.
A poster in New Zealand described their proposed add-on as "potentially an adipose-derived stem cell treatment, where cells are harvested from abdominal fat and injected into the scalp." A commenter who opted out wrote, "the science really isn't there in my opinion to determine it's true effectiveness."
On RealSelf, a patient asked whether fat-derived cells injected into the scalp help hair regrowth "or is this a waste of time?"
The Thailand version of the question is the same.
On r/Bangkok, a poster wrote, "I'm looking to do regenera activa... Not sure if its legit though.." Nobody in the thread reported having had it.
The positive account comes from the poster who started the r/HairTransplants thread at the top of this page: "I think the prp and stems helped." Their stem cell add-on came with FUE and PRP. So their result can't show what the injection added on its own.
Red Flags and Questions to Ask a Clinic
Three things should slow you down. A quote that says "stem cell" without naming the product is one.
Evidence for a different treatment is another. A fat-derived cell trial says nothing about a scalp-cell injection, and a mouse study says nothing about your scalp.
The third is approval language with no document behind it.
Ask these before you pay:
1. What is the product: PRP or GFC, exosomes, a scalp-cell micrograft, fat-derived cells, or something else? 2. Does it contain living cells? Does it come from me or from a donor? 3. If there is a harvest, where is it taken from, and who does the harvest and the injections? 4. Is this an add-on to my FUE, or a separate treatment? 5. What published human studies support this exact product and protocol? 6. Which regulator and product category apply in Thailand, and can I see the document? 7. What is the full price including repeat sessions, and what follow-up and records do I get after I fly home?
Our consultation questions page covers what to ask about the transplant itself.
The Future: Hair Cloning and What Is Coming
A RealSelf patient wrote that some clinic sites were "promising some kind of stem cell hair multiplication" that would give an unlimited supply of follicles from the patient's own skin cells.
The RIKEN work above reports follicles grown from stem cells. It is still at the lab and animal stage, and no source above gives a date for when it might reach patients.
A clinic selling follicle multiplication today is selling something the research hasn't reached.
Conclusion: What To Do Next
Thai clinics do sell treatments under the stem cell label. They are injections and add-ons, and none of them moves a new supply of follicles into a bald area the way a transplant does.
Before you pay for one, get its exact name, the evidence for that protocol and a written quote.
If you are planning a transplant, plan it around the donor hair you have. An add-on doesn't change how many grafts your donor area can give.
If a Thai clinic's quote doesn't tell you what is being injected, you can send us the wording and your questions through our contact page.
Frequently asked questions
Is a stem cell hair transplant real, or a gimmick?
The treatments are real services. In Bangkok, Absolute Hair Clinic and Bangkok Hair Clinic sell Rigenera scalp-cell injections, and Absolute presents exosomes as an FUE add-on.
None of them moves a new supply of follicles into a bald area the way FUE or FUT does. The human evidence is early and small, and the FDA has approved no stem cell or exosome product for hair loss.
Does injecting cells from fat help hair grow?
One randomized controlled trial of 33 patients with female pattern hair loss injected cultured fat-derived cells into the scalp. It reported better hair thickness and count at weeks 12 and 24.
That is one small study in one group of patients. It didn't show new follicles forming, and none of the Thai clinic pages we read describes this fat-harvest protocol.
Is Regenera Activa in Bangkok legitimate?
Rigenera Activa, often spelled Regenera by patients, is a named device-based treatment. Absolute Hair Clinic and Bangkok Hair Clinic both use it to process your own scalp cells for injection.
Being a real product doesn't settle whether it works for your hair loss. Ask the clinic for the human studies behind this exact protocol and the regulatory document it relies on in Thailand.
Are PRP, exosomes, and stem cell injections the same thing?
No. PRP, which Bangkok Hair Clinic also calls GFC, is platelets and growth factors concentrated from your own blood.
Exosomes are tiny vesicles that cells release, and Absolute describes exosomes as secreted by stem cells. Rigenera-type injections use a suspension made from your own scalp tissue.
Each has a different preparation and price. So a quote should name which one it is.
Should I add stem cells to my FUE transplant?
Only once you have the exact product, the evidence for that protocol and the full price in writing. One Bangkok patient had FUE, PRP and stem cells together, so their result can't show what the injection added on its own. If it is a large share of the bill, one r/HairTransplants reply sums up the trade: "Not really worth it if its a giant percentage of the HT cost."
Can stem cells give me an unlimited supply of hair follicles?
Not today. A RIKEN paper reported fully functional follicles grown in an artificial-skin system and in mouse skin, which is lab and animal work.
A 2026 Mahidol University review describes follicle stem cells and related cell types as possible future treatments. A clinic offering unlimited follicles now is selling something the research hasn't reached.
