FUT Stitches Removal in Thailand: Who Does It, When, and How to Plan It

Varun Sinai Priolkar had a combined FUT and FUE procedure at Absolute Hair Clinic in Bangkok and wrote it up in January 2025. He was told "half the FUT stutures should come off at day 7 and rest at 10-14 day mark, just before I leave Bangkok." He stayed at an Airbnb near the clinic, which "turned out to be a very good decision."

At the Thai clinics we compared, the stitches at the back of your head after a FUT hair transplant are removed by the clinic that did your surgery. That happens at a visit the clinic schedules, between 7 and 14 days after surgery.

Our hair transplant guide covers the whole procedure. This page covers who removes the stitches, when, and how to plan it before you book.

The planning matters because the removal day can land after a short Bangkok stay has ended.

Who Removes FUT Stitches

Hairsmith and DHT arrange the removal themselves.

Hairsmith Clinic's FUT page says: "Your surgeon will schedule an appointment to remove the sutures at the donor site 7 days after the procedure."

Its Thai-language FUT page says the same thing. In our translation, the doctor schedules a visit to remove the stitches at the back of the scalp 7 days after the transplant.

DHT Clinic told us by email on 15 October 2026 that its price includes "Post-operative care, change of Dressing or removal of stitches if needed."

The two clinics don't say who physically cuts the stitches. MyHairline, a patient-education site, describes the general pattern: "A nurse or physician assistant usually does the removal."

So ask your clinic directly: who will remove my stitches, and at which address?

It Is Your Clinic's Appointment

The ISHRS says the surgeon closes the donor incision "using either sutures (stitches) or staples." It also tells patients to follow what their own surgeon recommends "and not general guidelines posted on this website or even on the websites of other surgeons who have not operated on you."

DHT's Thai-language FAQ says the clinic schedules a visit to wash your hair, check the surgical wound and give you post-op care advice. The clinic books that follow-up.

Our view: if the removal has to happen somewhere other than the clinic, the clinic should be the one that sets it up. The section on leaving Thailand early below covers how to ask for that.

When FUT Stitches Come Out

Clinics publish different days, and one clinic publishes two.

ClinicWhat its page saysPage
Hairsmith"7 days after the procedure"English FUT page
Hairsmith7 days after the transplant (our translation)Thai FUT page
Hairsmith"you're required to get stitches off 10 days after surgery"English FAQ
DHT Clinic"the stitches are removed in 10-14 days"FUT page

All four pages were read 20 October 2026, and they don't show dates of their own. We compare what clinics publish and haven't visited these clinics.

Hairsmith's FUT pages say 7 days and its FAQ says 10. So ask the clinic which applies to your case.

Get the removal day in writing before you book your flights.

Why the Day Matters

MyHairline's guide says: "Leave them much past 14 days and you risk a tissue reaction or track marks alongside the main scar."

That's the reason to fix the day early, instead of fitting the removal in wherever it lands.

The Thailand Catch: The Removal Day Can Fall After Your Flight

DHT Clinic's English FAQ answers "How many days do I need to stay in Bangkok, Thailand?" with "You need to stay in Thailand at least 3-4 days." Day 1 is the consultation, day 2 is surgery, and day 3 is a follow-up "or you may depart back to your country."

The same FAQ says "It is safe to fly back home the next day after surgery." DHT's FUT page says the stitches come out in 10 to 14 days.

Put those two DHT pages side by side and a FUT patient on the minimum stay flies home one or two days after surgery. That's more than a week before the stitches are due out.

Hairsmith's 7 days is shorter, but ask any clinic how its shortest stay lines up with its removal day.

Varun planned his stay to run to the 10-to-14-day mark, at an Airbnb close to the clinic. So book a recovery stay that reaches the removal day, whatever the clinic's minimum is.

Is Stitch Removal Included in the Price?

At DHT, yes, per its written price. It lists "Doctor's fee", "All medications involved in the Surgery" and "Post-operative care, change of Dressing or removal of stitches if needed."

Confirmed by DHT Clinic in writing, 15 October 2026.

The same email excludes transport and accommodation. So the removal is included, but staying in Bangkok until the removal day is a cost you carry.

The other clinics we read don't say whether removal is in their price. So ask, and get the answer in writing.

If You Have Already Left Thailand

DHT's FAQ says: "Should you have any complications you may contact us by email or phone as our patients have done in the past and we will respond immediately."

MyHairline suggests one route for patients far from their clinic: "call the clinic and ask whether a local GP or dermatologist can do the removal and send photos back to your transplant surgeon."

That's a question for your own clinic. It isn't a plan to set up on your own.

Our suggestion: before you fly, ask the clinic what it will give you in writing for a doctor at home, and how that doctor should reach your surgeon.

What the Removal Appointment Is Like

MyHairline's general description of the process: "They part the hair, clean the area with an antiseptic solution, cut each suture loop with fine-pointed scissors, then pull the thread through with forceps."

It adds that a FUT closure "might involve 20 to 40 individual suture passes depending on strip length, and the whole thing is done in 10 to 20 minutes."

On how it feels, the same guide says: "Most patients describe mild pulling or a brief pinch, not real pain."

How to Avoid a Botched Removal

The part you control is the plan. Settle who removes the stitches, where, and on which day before you pay a deposit.

What Can Go Wrong

MyHairline describes two problems a removal can turn up: "a minor wound dehiscence (gap in the closure) or an embedded suture." Its point is that "you want to be in a clinical setting where it gets handled on the spot."

That's the case for having the removal done by your clinic, or by a doctor your clinic has agreed to.

Questions to Settle Before You Book

Put these to the clinic in writing:

Stitches or Staples, and Whether Any Dissolve

The ISHRS says a FUT donor incision is closed with sutures or staples. So ask which your surgeon plans to use.

Also ask whether anything in the closure is meant to dissolve, or whether all of it must be removed. The answer changes what your removal appointment involves.

Do Not Remove Them Yourself

Book the removal with your clinic or a doctor your clinic agrees to, and never cut or pull out FUT stitches yourself.

MyHairline calls a local doctor arranged through the clinic "a reasonable workaround" and adds: "Drugstore scissors at your bathroom mirror is not."

The ISHRS line above applies here too. Follow the surgeon who operated on you.

What a Thailand Patient Reports

Varun Sinai Priolkar's account (January 2025) covers a combined FUT and FUE of 6,715 grafts with Dr Ratchathorn Panchaprateep at Absolute Hair Clinic in Bangkok.

His removal plan came in two stages: "I was told half the FUT stutures should come off at day 7 and rest at 10-14 day mark, just before I leave Bangkok."

He wrote that he went to the clinic every day. "My wound is then cleaned up, the doctor examines me and we have a brief chat about how things are going."

What carries over: he knew both removal days and stayed near the clinic.

What FUT Is and Why It Has Stitches

FUT stands for follicular unit transplantation. The ISHRS describes FUT as "removing a strip of tissue 0.5 to 1.5 cm in width and from 5 to 30 cm long from the back of the head, which after having been removed, is closed with sutures or staples."

Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai-language FAQ puts it this way, in our translation: because a piece of skin is cut from the scalp, FUT must involve suturing the skin, which may cause a small horizontal scar.

Our FUE vs FUT comparison covers how the two techniques differ beyond the stitches.

The Procedure in Brief

Per the ISHRS, the removed strip goes to "the dissection team that supports the surgeon who then dissects the grafts while the surgeon closes the donor incision using either sutures (stitches) or staples."

The American Academy of Dermatology says that once all the hairs are transplanted, "your scalp will be bandaged and you will be given instructions for at-home care."

Does FUE Have Stitches?

FUE (follicular unit excision) takes individual follicular units with "micro punches that span from 0.7 to 1.2 mm in size," according to the ISHRS. There isn't a strip incision to close.

The AAD says removing individual hairs "avoids leaving a long, narrow scar on your scalp." Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai FAQ says its DHI puncture wounds are only 0.6 to 0.8 mm, so they don't need suturing (our translation).

So the stitch-removal question is a FUT question. If you're still choosing a technique, ask the clinic how either option fits your travel dates.

Will the Donor Scar Show?

DHT's FUT page says it closes the wound with a "double trichophytic technique." It adds that most patients can go back to work a few days after surgery "without the donor wound being noticed when the hair length are kept at least 3 cm."

Hairsmith says its trichophytic closure "allows hair to grow directly through the scar line, making the linear scar significantly thinner and more discreet."

Its Thai-language page lists the limits, in our translation: a long scar at the back of the scalp, so avoid cutting your hair short, a longer recovery than FUE, and possible pain where the strip was cut. Our hair transplant scars guide covers scar visibility and repair.

Care While the Stitches Are In

Care rules come from your own surgeon. The ISHRS says "Use of bandages, sprays, etc., and water and exercise restriction instructions truly differ by the surgeon."

Here is what two Thai clinics publish. Hairsmith's Thai FUT page says, in our translation: avoid touching or rubbing the transplanted area for 2 weeks, avoid heavy exercise, take your medicine as the doctor prescribes, and see the doctor at the scheduled appointment.

That list is about the transplanted area. It isn't specific to the strip wound. Hairsmith's English FUT page adds: "Attend all scheduled appointments to monitor growth and ensure optimal results."

DHT's Thai FAQ says, in our translation, that strenuous exercise that makes you sweat a lot is best avoided for 1 month. Hairsmith's FAQ notes that with FUT "you might feel more pain after surgery and it will stay there for many days."

Our aftercare guide covers the wider day-by-day routine.

Follow your own surgeon's instructions, and ask your own doctor before changing any step.

What FUT Hair Transplants Cost in Thailand

DHT Clinic gave us Dr. Path's price for FUT or shaven FUE: ฿123 ($3.71) per graft above 600 grafts, with a ฿78,000 ($2,350) minimum for 1 to 600 grafts. The price includes removal of stitches if needed.

Confirmed by DHT Clinic in writing, 15 October 2026.

For Dr. Moo at the same clinic, one prospective patient wrote in a r/HairTransplants thread on 23 January 2026: "Moo is cheaper (80 thb vs 120 thb per graft)."

That's ฿80 ($2.41) per graft, patient-reported. For Dr. Path, the clinic's own written ฿123 is the newer figure.

Thai Hair Clinic, which is in Chiang Mai, not Bangkok, publishes US$2.25 per graft for smaller FUT sessions, falling to US$1.89 to 2.20 for larger ones (read 23 September 2026). Its page doesn't say whether stitch removal is included. So ask.

Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).

Signs to Contact Your Surgeon

DHT's English FAQ says "most of its complications are self limited eg., redness, swelling, folliculitis, numbness etc." and says to contact the clinic by email or phone.

Its Thai FAQ says, in our translation, that if a complication is found you can contact the clinic immediately.

A 2026 review of hair transplant complications in Frontiers in Medicine lists signs of infection as "pustules or honey-colored crusts, increasing pain, swelling, erythema, purulent drainage, and tenderness or enlargement of regional lymph nodes." The review covers FUE, not FUT wounds.

MyHairline adds the two removal problems above: a gap in the closure or an embedded suture.

If you see any of these, contact the clinic that operated on you, and see your own doctor if you can't reach them. Our infection guide covers warning signs in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Who removes FUT stitches in Thailand?

At the Thai clinics we compared, it's the clinic that did your surgery. Hairsmith says the surgeon schedules the removal appointment, and DHT's written price includes "removal of stitches if needed" as post-operative care.

The two clinics don't say whether the doctor, a nurse or an assistant cuts the stitches. MyHairline says a nurse or physician assistant usually does it. So ask your clinic who will do it and at which address.

When do FUT stitches come out?

It depends on the clinic. Hairsmith's FUT pages say 7 days after the procedure, and its FAQ says 10 days.

DHT Clinic's FUT page says 10 to 14 days. Ask your clinic which day applies to you, and get it in writing before you book flights.

Is stitch removal included in the price?

At DHT Clinic, yes. Its written price, confirmed by email on 15 October 2026, includes "Post-operative care, change of Dressing or removal of stitches if needed."

Transport and accommodation are excluded. The other clinics we read don't state it either way, so ask yours in writing.

What if I fly home before the removal day?

Then someone else has to remove them. In our view, the clinic should arrange who. DHT's minimum stay is 3 to 4 days, while its stitches come out at 10 to 14 days. Before booking, ask your clinic who will remove them if you've left, what it will give you in writing for a doctor at home, and how that doctor reaches your surgeon.

Can I remove FUT stitches myself?

No. Book the removal with your clinic or a doctor your clinic agrees to.

MyHairline says a local GP or dermatologist arranged through the clinic is a reasonable workaround, and "Drugstore scissors at your bathroom mirror is not." The ISHRS tells patients to follow the surgeon who operated on them.

Does FUE leave stitches?

FUE doesn't leave a strip incision to close. The ISHRS describes FUE punches of 0.7 to 1.2 mm, and Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai FAQ says its DHI puncture wounds don't need suturing. The removal appointment on this page is a FUT step.
