Going Back to Work After a Hair Transplant: How Many Days Off You Need
Part of our hair transplant guide. If hair loss has you weighing a trip abroad, one early question is how soon you can go back to work after a hair transplant. The answers run from the next day to a month.
The Aesthetic Society, the NHS, a Bangkok hospital and a Reddit commenter each give a different number. This page puts them side by side, shows why they differ, and splits the answer by job. If you're flying to Thailand for the operation, it also covers the days you'll spend near the clinic.
How Many Days Off Work Do You Need After a Hair Transplant?
Quick answer. The NHS says you may need 1 to 2 weeks off. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) gives one week as the minimum after FUE and two weeks after FUT.
Thai clinics on their own pages give anything from the next day to about five days for office work. Your job, your technique and how visible the healing is decide which number fits, and your own surgeon's instructions come first.
| Source | What it says about going back to work |
|---|---|
| ISHRS | No single answer; at least one week after FUE and two weeks after FUT, and possibly sooner if the recipient area isn't shaved |
| NHS (England) | You may need 1 to 2 weeks off work, and the grafts aren't secure for the first 2 weeks |
| Aesthetic Society | You can return to work within one to two days, though some patients take more time; it depends on the type of work |
| ASPS | You may feel well enough for work and light activity after several days |
| Hairsmith, Bangkok | After FUE, most patients can return to work the next day |
| HairTran, Bangkok | Almost immediately on its FAQ page, and 1 to 3 days on its FUE page |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Normal activities within 1 to 3 days, for its partial-shave DHI option |
| Yanhee Hospital, Bangkok | Desk work is realistic within a few days, and sooner after a non-shaven harvest |
| The Skin Clinic (Hair), Bangkok | Office work about 2 to 5 days; customer-facing or physical work 5 to 14 days |
| Wimpole, London | Most patients within 1 to 2 weeks, and all FUE patients at least a week off |
| Capital Hair Restoration, London | 5 to 10 days in most cases, and at least 10 to 14 days for physically demanding work |
| Treatment Rooms London | At least 10 days off if you have to go into the office |
The NHS page is written for England and says hair transplants aren't available on the NHS because they're cosmetic. The ISHRS figure is a minimum, and its page doesn't say what counts as being back at work.
Clinic figures are what each clinic says about itself on its own pages, and nobody at AsiaPatient has visited these clinics. The ranges don't match, and averaging them would hide the reason, which the next section explains.
Why the Numbers Differ: Three Clocks
"Back at work" means different things to different sources. We split it into three clocks, and each source above is mostly watching one of them.
Clock One Is When the Grafts Can Be Knocked Out
A 2006 study in Dermatologic Surgery tested how firmly grafts hold after hair transplant surgery, by pulling on a hair or a scab in 42 patients (Bernstein and Rassman). For the first 2 days, pulling on a hair always lost the graft. By day 6 it no longer did, and by 9 days grafts were no longer at risk of being dislodged.
Scabs matter too. Pulling on an adherent scab always lost a graft through day 5, and the authors say crusting extends the time grafts are at risk. The study's abstract says nothing about work.
Yanhee puts it in plain words: for the first few days a thin natural clot holds the grafts until they take root. The NHS says to be very careful with the grafts for the first 2 weeks. Our aftercare guide has the daily rules.
Clock Two Is When Swelling Goes Down
A 2026 review in Frontiers in Medicine (Romera de Blas and colleagues) says forehead and eye-area swelling after FUE peaks around days 2 to 3 and goes away on its own within 5 to 7 days. Mild bruising can occasionally last up to 10 to 15 days.
Clock Three Is When Scabs and Redness Stop Showing
The same review says crusts clear by 7 to 10 days. It calls redness around the transplanted follicles common and expected, and says it resolves within 2 to 4 weeks in most patients. For a subset it may last several weeks or months, and the review gives no share.
This is the clock that keeps people home. Yanhee says that for most people the timing is set not by pain but by how visible the recipient area is while the crusts are still there. The Skin Clinic (Hair) says the same in Thai: what usually makes people take leave is the red hairline, small scabs or forehead swelling (our translation).
Our reading is that a job where people look at your hairline runs mostly on clock three, and a physical job runs mostly on clocks one and two.
Days Off by Type of Job
These are clinic recommendations, not measurements of patients. Where two pages from one clinic differ, we show both.
| Job | What named clinics say |
|---|---|
| Desk or remote work | The Skin Clinic (Hair): 2 to 5 days for office work; Wimpole: 3 to 4 days from home, 1 week in an office; Capital Hair Restoration: 3 to 5 days from home |
| Customer-facing work | The Skin Clinic (Hair): 5 to 10 days; Treatment Rooms London: at least 10 days if you have to go into the office; Wimpole: 1 week for sales and marketing office roles |
| Physical, manual or outdoor work | The Skin Clinic (Hair): 7 to 14 days; Capital Hair Restoration: 10 to 14 days; Wimpole: 2 weeks for warehouse, delivery, construction, farm and factory roles |
| Helmet or hard hat | The Skin Clinic (Hair): 10 to 14 days for work in a safety helmet; Hairsmith: avoid a helmet for the first two weeks |
The Skin Clinic (Hair) publishes its own table in Thai. Here it is beside our translation.
| Type of work (Thai) | Our translation | Days off | Reason given (our translation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| งานหน้าคอม | Computer work | 3 days | Allows for swelling on days 2 to 3 |
| งานพบลูกค้า | Customer meetings | 5-7 days | Fewer scabs and less redness |
| งานใช้แรง | Physical work | 7-10 days | Avoids pressure and sweat |
| ใส่หมวกนิรภัย | Wearing a safety helmet | 10-14 days | Reduces friction |
The summary at the end of that page gives wider ranges (office work 2 to 5 days, customer meetings 5 to 10, physical work 7 to 14) and says to plan 3 to 7 days of leave depending on the job.
Desk and Remote Work
The Skin Clinic (Hair) says sitting and working doesn't directly affect the wounds, but advises a break every 1 to 2 hours and not keeping your head bent down for more than 30 to 60 minutes (our translation). Wimpole calls an early return possible but risky, and generally only from home.
On video calls, the Skin Clinic (Hair) says the hairline is still red with small scabs for the first 3 to 7 days, and suggests light from the front and a camera angle that doesn't emphasize it (our translation).
Customer-Facing Jobs
The reason here is looks, not pain. The Skin Clinic (Hair) says the main reason is image: small scabs at the hairline, possible forehead swelling in days 2 to 4, and clear redness in some people (our translation). Treatment Rooms London gives at least 10 days in the office, so you show no redness or scabbing.
Physical, Manual and Outdoor Work
The concerns are sweat, pressure and lifting. The Skin Clinic (Hair) says the grafts are still attaching in the first 5 to 7 days, and that heavy lifting, fast running or often bending the head down may raise pressure in the scalp. It adds that this doesn't mean grafts will come out at once, and says to consult the doctor before returning to physical, outdoor or helmet work (our translation).
Capital Hair Restoration advises at least 10 to 14 days before physically demanding work, and Wimpole says people in physically demanding jobs may be told to wait 2 weeks after FUT.
Exercise limits run in the same range: MedPark Hospital says at least 1 week without heavy exercise or lifting (our translation), HairTran says to avoid strenuous activity for 2 to 3 weeks and heavy-sweat activities for 14 days, and the ASPS says you may be told to avoid vigorous exercise and contact sports for at least three weeks. Use these if your job is physical.
Jobs With a Helmet or Hard Hat
The Skin Clinic (Hair) gives 10 to 14 days for work in a safety helmet, to reduce friction. Hairsmith says to avoid a helmet for the first two weeks, then wear it with caution to avoid excessive pressure on the scalp.
What Shows at Work in the First Two Weeks
Dressings come first. The Aesthetic Society says you'll likely wear them for at least two days, and the NHS says bandages can usually come off after 2 to 5 days.
For the full schedule, see our recovery timeline. Here's what colleagues might see, by source.
| What shows | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Swelling | MedPark: may appear on day 2, gone by day 5 (our translation); Yanhee: days 2 to 4; Natural Hair Transplant Medical Center, a US clinic: mild swelling typically settles within 3 to 5 days |
| Scabs | Bangkok Hair Clinic: shed on their own between days 4 and 14; CosmoPrime: 7 to 14 days; HairTran: fall out naturally after 2 weeks; Hairsmith: fall off after 15 days |
| Redness | Natural Hair Transplant Medical Center: 3 to 5 days on its post-op page and 2 to 3 weeks on its FAQ page; Bangkok Hair Clinic: 7 to 10 days; Masterpiece Hospital: 1 to 2 weeks (our translation); Treatment Rooms London: 10 to 14 days |
Scab timing splits the sources most. The Frontiers review says crusts clear by 7 to 10 days, Hairsmith says they fall off after 15 days, and the US clinic above says on its FAQ page that scabs fall off after 2 to 3 weeks.
None of these pages explains the gap. Whichever number you plan around, the review says crusts lasting beyond 2 weeks should be checked, because they may mean delayed healing.
Redness Can Outlast the Scabs
Treatment Rooms London says redness tends to last 10 to 14 days but can rarely last 6 to 8 weeks, especially with lighter-colored skin. Wimpole says it can linger for a few weeks even after the scabs have gone. If people at work see your hairline every day, plan for the longer end.
The Donor Area
With FUT, Yanhee says stitches or staples come out at about 7 to 14 days, Hairsmith says 10 days, and the NHS says non-dissolvable stitches can usually come out after 10 to 14 days.
With shaven FUE, Yanhee says you leave with a visibly shaved back and sides, and if donor density is low the area can look patchy for the weeks it takes to grow back. Our FUE vs FUT guide and donor area page cover the details.
Hats, Helmets and Sun at Work
Clinics disagree on hats, but less than it looks.
| Source | Hat advice |
|---|---|
| Yanhee | A loose hat is fine from the start |
| HairTran | No tight or heavy caps, hats or helmets for the first 2 weeks; the clinic provides a bandana for outdoors |
| CosmoPrime | No tight hats or helmets for at least 2 weeks; loose, soft hats that don't touch the transplanted area |
| Capital Hair Restoration | A loose-fitting hat may be worn after 7 to 10 days; tight hats are avoided early |
| Wimpole | No hat until at least 10 days; if you return sooner, avoid tasks that need a hat or helmet |
| Treatment Rooms London | A tight hat risks the newly transplanted hairs; if you must wear one, take 2 weeks off |
The word that settles most of it is loose. Bangkok Hair Clinic says to wear only approved, loose headwear, and Masterpiece Hospital says to bring a loose hat and avoid a tight one (our translation). Wimpole is the strictest on hats.
An r/HairTransplants commenter wrote in March 2025 that they took 3 days off plus the weekend and wore a ball cap. A reply called a ball cap at day 6 risky, and the first commenter answered that their surgeon said it was fine and the cap is pretty loose.
Sun and Heat at Work
Sun advice runs from 14 days to 3 months, depending on the clinic page. Yanhee says a month out of direct sun, HairTran's FUE page says 14 days, and HairTran's post-op page and Hairsmith say 3 months, with a hat or cap outdoors.
Bangkok Hair Clinic says intense heat can irritate the healing scalp, so avoid prolonged outdoor activities early on. CosmoPrime says the protective cap a clinic is likely to give you is for going outside, to shield the scalp from sun and dust. If your job is outdoors, ask your clinic which of these applies, and see our aftercare guide for the general rules.
Hiding It at Work
How much shows depends first on whether the clinic shaves.
Shaving Is the Biggest Choice
The ISHRS says many clinics require the head to be shaved, in part or completely, for FUE, and that the recipient area may be shaved too. For FUT, usually only the strip area is shaved, so longer donor hair above it can cover the stitches or staples.
The ISHRS also says that if the recipient region isn't shaved, you might return to work even sooner than one week because nothing visible shows you had surgery. If it is shaved, styling problems can delay your return.
- Yanhee. Non-shaven FUE leaves no visible change to the hairstyle, so most patients get back to ordinary life faster "because there is nothing to explain". The trade-off is time and volume, with a practical ceiling of roughly 1,500 to 2,000 grafts for a non-shaven case.
- HairTran. Existing hair can hide the donor area from the first day, which it calls a practical option for patients who want to return to work.
- Hairsmith. It names a job that needs a polished appearance as one reason people hesitate to shave, and says non-shaven FUE takes longer and is generally more expensive.
- Bangkok Hair Clinic. Its partial-shave DHI trims only selected spots, hidden under existing hair.
- Treatment Rooms London. After a grade 0 shave, it can take 7 to 10 days for hair to grow to a length that isn't seen as too short for work.
Our no-shave hair transplant page covers who it suits, and the long hair transplant page covers the long-hair version. The basics of the method are on our FUE hair transplant page.
Clothing
Three Bangkok sources suggest front-button shirts. Hairsmith recommends a dark one for ease of putting it on afterward, MedPark says a front-button shirt on the day and no round-neck T-shirt for the first 2 to 3 days (our translation), and Bangkok Hair Clinic says clothing that doesn't need pulling over your head, to avoid friction with the transplant site.
Covering Redness and Scabs
Clinics split on products. The Skin Clinic (Hair) says to wait until the scabs come off, about 10 to 14 days, before using hair-concealing spray or fibers (our translation).
Wimpole suggests tinted moisturizer for redness, and spray-on hair fibers, a temporary way to boost density that can also cover redness and small scabs (especially on darker hair). It adds a work-appropriate hat from day 10. These are clinic suggestions, not tested methods, so ask your surgeon first.
Planning Your Leave Around a Trip to Thailand
If you're flying in for hair transplant surgery, time off work includes the days you must stay near the clinic. These are the stay lengths two Bangkok clinics publish.
| Clinic and technique | Minimum stay | Longer stay it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Yanhee, shaven FUE | 48 hours, for the day-1 review, dressing removal and first professional wash | About one week |
| Yanhee, non-shaven or long-hair FUE | 3 days | 3 to 7 days |
| Yanhee, FUT | 48 hours for the first wash | Long enough to have the stitches or staples out at 7 to 14 days, or arrange removal at home |
| HairTran | 3 days, if time is limited and you rest before traveling home | 2 weeks, covering consultation, the procedure and recovery with follow-up |
None of this tells you when to fly home. Ask your hair transplant clinic for that date, and get it in writing.
The Day-1 Visit and Follow-Up
Yanhee says the day-1 visit isn't skippable: the dressing comes off, the grafts are inspected and the first wash is done. It books visits for day 1, day 3 and one week.
HairTran's day-1 visit is wound cleaning, a basic check-up and aftercare instructions, and its 2-week check may include an olive oil treatment if scabs remain.
On Pantip, a Thai forum, a Hairsmith patient wrote in May 2026 that they were back in Thailand at the 2-week mark and had the clinic remove the scabs. The same post says they flew back to work abroad and sent update photos to the clinic on LINE, a messaging app (our translation).
Our consultation questions page lists what to ask about stay length and follow-up.
No Driving on the Day
MedPark says not to drive yourself on the day of surgery, because the sedative can cause dizziness and drowsiness (our translation). The American Academy of Dermatology says most patients stay awake with numbing anesthesia only, and some also take a mild sedative. The Skin Clinic (Hair) says to avoid drives of 3 to 4 hours in the first 2 days (our translation).
Friday Procedure, Monday Return
The Skin Clinic (Hair) says some people may be back at work on Monday after a Friday procedure, but to expect scabs and redness that are still clearly visible in the first week (our translation).
What Patients Reported
These are forum posts about hair transplants, and they're unverified. They show what individuals say, not what most patients do.
One Pantip poster asked in July 2022 whether they could live normally, work, or had to stay in and do only light work (our translation). Here's what people answered.
What People Say They Did
- A remote worker on r/HairTransplants, March 2025, had the operation on a Friday and wore a very loose bucket hat on Monday.
- A commenter on the same thread, March 2025, took 7 days off and has worn a hat since.
- Another commenter, March 2025, took three weeks: one to get to Turkey and have the procedure, two to recover, then a fourth week working from home. It was Turkey, not Thailand, but it shows leave planned around travel.
- A fourth commenter, March 2025, took 2 weeks off because they couldn't wear a helmet.
- A Pantip commenter, May 2026, said they had it done at Hairsmith in Bangkok, took 3 days off work and then went back. They wrote that the first 3 to 5 days need care, with no sun and no sweating (our translation).
- Another Pantip commenter, March 2025, said they had FUE at HairTran's Sukhumvit 42 clinic and didn't need many days off, because they could return to normal life the next day. They advised no exercise for the first 2 weeks (our translation).
What People Advise
Advice isn't the same as what someone did, and it runs wide. In the two r/HairTransplants threads linked here, it ran from working from home with the camera off after 2 to 3 days to taking a month off.
- Working from home with the camera off: 2 to 3 days, maximum 5. Face to face, 2 weeks, because a transplant is very apparent, or around day 10 if you don't care (February 2024).
- In person: take the whole week after because of swelling, March 2025.
- Day 3 is possible, so Friday to Monday can work, but expect to be groggy, swollen and tired from poor sleep. The commenter suggested a holiday weekend or a few days of paid time off to stretch it (February 2024).
- 2 weeks minimum, or it's quite noticeable, March 2025.
- 3 to 10 days, with 10 ideal because of scabs and day 1 possible for a desk job, March 2025.
- A month off, if you can take it, then a hat at work or a short cut if you had FUE, March 2025.
When to Call the Clinic Instead of Going to Work
Yanhee says to call the hospital for bleeding that doesn't stop with gentle pressure, spreading redness or pus at the donor or recipient site, fever, pain that gets worse rather than better after the first few days, or a graft coming out in the first days.
The Skin Clinic (Hair) lists signs to rest longer: clear swelling around the eyes, a lot of pain at the back of the head after FUT, blood seeping or scabs coming off too early, and dizziness from the medicine. It says to contact the clinic at once if anything is abnormal (our translation).
The Aesthetic Society says to contact your surgeon for extreme or long-lasting pain, or for redness and swelling. The NHS fever page says a high temperature is usually 38C or above.
Infection after FUE is rare, and the Frontiers review says most studies report an incidence below 1%, although rates vary. Typical signs are pustules or honey-colored crusts, increasing pain, swelling, redness, pus-like drainage, and tender or enlarged lymph nodes nearby.

A Way to Plan Your Time Off
This is our reading of the sources, not a medical rule.
- Technique: A shaved recipient area can delay your return, according to the ISHRS. A non-shaven or partial-shave option lets existing hair cover more, according to HairTran and Bangkok Hair Clinic.
- Job: Desk and remote work start at a few days. Customer-facing work runs 5 to 10 days at the Skin Clinic (Hair), and physical and helmet work 7 to 14.
- Days it shows: Swelling by about day 5, scabs by about day 7 to 14 on several pages and later on others, and redness from several days to about 4 weeks for most patients.
- Days near the clinic: Yanhee and HairTran give different minimums, so ask your clinic for its own.
- The clinic's number: Ask your hair transplant clinic for its figure for your job and technique. Our consultation questions page has the rest of the list.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days off do I need after a hair transplant?
The sources give anything from the next day to two weeks. The ISHRS says at least one week after FUE and two after FUT, the NHS says 1 to 2 weeks, and Thai clinics say the next day to about five days for office work. Your job and how visible the healing is decide which fits.
Can I go to work the day after a hair transplant?
Hairsmith says most FUE patients can return to work the next day, and HairTran says you can live your normal life the day after. The Aesthetic Society says typically within one to two days. Wimpole calls returning early possible but risky, and generally only from home.
Can I wear a hat or helmet at work?
Yanhee says a loose hat is fine from the start. HairTran and CosmoPrime say no tight hats or helmets for at least 2 weeks, Hairsmith says to avoid a helmet for the first two weeks, and Wimpole says no hat until at least 10 days. Most of these clinics single out tight hats and helmets.
Will my colleagues notice?
It all depends on the technique and the day. Wimpole says lingering signs of surgery show 1 week after the operation, and advises at least 2 weeks off if you don't want people to know. The ISHRS says an unshaved recipient area may let you return sooner than a week.
Should I choose a no-shave transplant if I have to be at work?
HairTran calls non-shaven FUE a practical option for patients who want to return to work. Yanhee puts the trade-off at time and volume, and Hairsmith says it takes longer and is generally more expensive. See our no-shave hair transplant page for who it suits.
How many days should I stay in Thailand?
Yanhee gives a minimum of 48 hours for shaven FUE, with about one week as the comfortable stay. For non-shaven and long-hair FUE it gives 3 days minimum and 3 to 7 days comfortable. HairTran recommends two weeks for the whole trip, and three days as the minimum if time is limited.
What if I work outdoors in the heat or in dusty work environments?
Among the clinic pages above, the guidance covers sweat, heat and sun. Bangkok Hair Clinic says intense heat can irritate the healing scalp, CosmoPrime says the protective cap a clinic is likely to give you shields the scalp from sun and dust, and the Skin Clinic (Hair) says to consult the doctor before returning to outdoor work (our translation).
