Getting Around Bangkok After a Hair Transplant (2026)

After a hair transplant in Bangkok, Reddit user u/blackfoxed left Absolute Hair and took a Grab taxi back to the hotel to avoid heat and sweat. The patient described that ride on r/HairTransplants.

For getting around Bangkok after surgery, we'd plan a car back on procedure day. Walk only when the route won't make you sweat; consider BTS or MRT when the station walk and crowds are manageable, following your clinic's instructions. In a taxi, enter slowly and keep your scalp clear of the door frame and headrest.

Clinics cannot pay to be listed or ranked higher on AsiaPatient.

The First Two Weeks Are the Sensitive Window

HairTran tells patients to avoid strenuous activity, excessive sweating, and direct sunlight for the first two weeks. Those instructions affect the walk to a station and the wait outside for a car, as well as the journey itself.

Build your transport plan around your treating clinic's written instructions. Our Bangkok recovery guide covers recovery day by day; here, the decision is how to reach the hotel and follow-up appointments without an unnecessary hot walk or contact with your scalp.

The Three Rules That Shape Every Trip

A short journey can still involve sweating or scalp contact. Check the route from the building entrance to the vehicle, then from the drop-off point to the next entrance.

What to avoidWhat the clinic saysWhat to check before leaving
Heavy sweatingHairTran: "Avoid activities that cause heavy sweating (e.g., intense exercise, sauna) for the first 14 days."The walk and outdoor wait, including the return trip
Direct sunHairTran says to protect the scalp from direct sunlight during that period.Shade between the entrance and pickup point
Rubbing or pressureBangkok Hair Clinic, translated from Thai: "Avoid scratching, rubbing, or pressing on the transplanted area."Door-frame clearance, your position against the headrest, and space around you

We compare published clinic guidance with patient reports; nobody at AsiaPatient has visited or had a procedure at these clinics.

The transplanted area is the part of your scalp where the new grafts were placed. Ask your clinic to show you how to sit comfortably in a car while keeping pressure off the areas it wants protected.

Before You Set Off: The Two-Way Trip Check

Decide how you'll get back before you leave. Your return trip might need a different mode.

Walking to a follow-up doesn't commit you to walking home. Taking a train out doesn't mean you have to use it again if the station is crowded.

For procedure day, settle the clinic-to-hotel ride in advance. Ask the clinic for its discharge and driving instructions, and where a driver should meet you after the procedure.

One HairTran patient described the clinic calling a taxi after bandaging, followed by dinner and a return to the hotel (r/HairTransplants). Ask whether your clinic can help arrange your ride, and have your own car-booking plan if it can't.

For a follow-up, save the clinic entrance and hotel destination before setting off. Check the pickup point again before leaving the appointment, especially if you walked there and now want a car.

For an optional outing, choose the return pickup before going inside. If reaching it would mean a hot walk, choose somewhere else or postpone the outing.

The Sweat Threshold: When a Walk Becomes a Problem

On r/HairTransplants, u/Sassy-Silly-Salmon described their limit: "Im walking 14 min and thats the max for me. Im a healthy individual but i sweat immediately. So since i had the surgery i do grab."

That March 2025 comment appears in a r/HairTransplants discussion where another commenter warned that a 24-minute walk in Bangkok humidity could be a lot after surgery. Both comments describe the difficulty of a particular walk; neither gives you a safe number of minutes.

Bangkok Hair Clinic allows light walking that doesn't cause sweating in its Thai aftercare instructions. It also tells patients to avoid hot places to prevent sweat and dampness around the transplanted area.

Choose a car if you expect the walk to make you sweat.

Use what you already know about yourself. If you start sweating as soon as you walk outdoors, a nearby destination can still justify a ride.

A short walk to a pickup point followed by a hot wait can defeat the reason you booked a car. So include the time spent waiting outside in that decision.

If you start getting hot on the way, stop somewhere cool and arrange the rest of the journey by car. Don't keep walking simply because the map says you're almost there.

Grab Car vs Short Walk vs BTS: Picking Your Mode

We'd start with a car for the ride after surgery and for follow-ups that involve heat or tiring walks. A short walk or rail trip can work when the route and your clinic's instructions allow it.

ModeWhen we'd choose itWhat could change the decision
Grab car or taxiProcedure-day hotel ride; a trip likely to cause sweating; a return when you're tiredA distant pickup point, outdoor waiting, or awkward head clearance
Short walkA cool or shaded, uncrowded route that won't make you sweatHeat, direct sun, crowds, or feeling less comfortable on the way back
BTS or MRTManageable station access, room around your head, and no long outdoor walk at either endStairs, crowding, or a final walk that makes the journey harder than a car ride

Grab car: the default

One patient, u/NoTalentPeaBrain, wrote: "I used grab app for all my transportation and i chose the car option because i did not want extra risk using motorcycles." The comment is on r/HairTransplants.

We'd also choose a car over a motorcycle while following conservative scalp-protection instructions. Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai guidance tells patients to avoid a helmet or small hat during its early aftercare period.

Before booking, check that you've selected a car. Arrange an air-conditioned ride and a pickup you can reach without a long outdoor walk.

The Absolute patient in the opening described pickup zones, a driver photo, and a license plate in the app. Use those details to find the ride, and check the pickup location before heading outside (r/HairTransplants).

Short walk: when it works

A walk is an option when it stays cool enough, leaves space around your head, and fits your clinic's instructions. Check the actual entrance-to-entrance route before relying on the distance shown on a map.

Patient choices vary. One patient reported walking back to an Airbnb on procedure day and going out for food that evening (r/HairTransplants).

The Absolute patient described a nine-to-ten-minute walk but recommended a taxi after surgery that night in case of dizziness. If you're considering walking back, ask your own clinic before leaving and keep a car as the alternative.

BTS and MRT: check the station walk and crowds

One commenter described getting around Bangkok without a taxi: "I personally never used a taxi, tuktuk or such in Bangkok. It was all metros/subways and busses." That account appears on r/HairTransplants.

For a post-transplant trip, check both station walks before choosing BTS or MRT. Include getting through the station itself and any stairs you would need to manage comfortably.

Look at the space available around you before boarding. If the platform or train is packed and you can't avoid close contact, change the plan rather than squeeze through.

A station near your hotel only solves one end of the journey. So if the clinic end still leaves you with a hot walk, we'd choose a car to the entrance instead.

Taxi and the airport transfer

The HairTran patient's taxi after bandaging is an example of a clinic arranging the hotel ride. Confirm who will book yours and where you should wait before the appointment ends.

Grab Thailand publishes Suvarnabhumi Airport pickup arrangements. Confirm the pickup for your own booking with the operator rather than assuming the car meets you at whichever exit you use.

If a clinic offers to arrange an airport ride, ask whether it covers arrival, departure, or both. Get the pickup instructions and any charge in writing, and apply the same door-frame and headrest precautions to that ride.

Where to Stay: The Sukhumvit Corridor and the Hotel Next to the Clinic

Choose a hotel by the route you'll repeat for follow-ups. If you're looking along Sukhumvit, start with your clinic's address and work out the final walk or car pickup before choosing a hotel.

The Absolute patient advised: "Stay at a close hotel within walking distance, you do not want to be constantly driving to and from the clinic." That advice came from their own stay (r/HairTransplants).

HairTran describes its location as a short walk from BTS Asok and MRT Sukhumvit. If that's your clinic, use its directions to check the approach from a prospective hotel; our HairTran clinic page covers its published care and patient accounts.

Being close gives you the option of walking when conditions suit you, but the same route can be too hot after surgery. So allow for a car even when you've booked nearby.

Head Protection in the City: Keeping the Grafts Safe

One commenter gave a warning that applies even after you've booked the car: "Be careful rubbing your head within the taxi." It appears in the same r/HairTransplants discussion about getting around after Absolute Hair.

Bangkok Hair Clinic states: "No rubbing, scrubbing, scratching or the transplanted area for 2 weeks." Its Thai instructions also warn against pressure on the transplanted area.

Ask the driver to wait while you get seated.

Pause at the open door and check the frame above your head. Enter slowly, using any posture your clinic has shown you, then settle into the seat without rubbing your scalp against the roof or headrest.

Fasten your seatbelt and check that you can sit comfortably without pressing the treated area against the seat. If you can't, ask the clinic staff for help before the car leaves.

Take the same care getting out. Wait until the car has stopped, look at the door opening, and leave yourself enough room to clear it.

In a crowded station or entrance, leave space ahead of you and avoid pushing through. A patient leaving a Bangkok clinic described being "extremely careful not to accidentally hit my head" (r/HairTransplants).

For sun protection, follow your treating clinic's instructions on head coverings. HairTran tells patients to use its protective cap as instructed, while Bangkok Hair Clinic warns against tight headwear in its Thai guidance.

Ask before using a hat, bandana, or hoodie that could press or rub the transplanted area. If you don't have an approved covering, choose a route that avoids direct sun rather than improvising one.

Bangkok Hair Clinic also says: "Wear a buttoned shirt on the day of the procedure." Wear it to the clinic so you don't have to pull a tight shirt over your head afterward.

What You Can Actually Do While You Heal

One patient who stayed in Bangkok after surgery described spending time in malls and other indoor areas, taking cabs between indoor places (r/HairTransplants). Another patient praised the air conditioning in Bangkok malls (r/HairTransplants).

For an outing your clinic allows, we'd choose somewhere indoors where you can sit and stay cool. Check how you'll get from the car into the building, and where you'll meet the return ride.

Keep the outing easy to end. If getting back means a long outdoor walk or a crowded station, change the transport plan before you leave the hotel.

How Many Days to Stay in Bangkok

Ask your clinic which follow-up visits need to happen in person before booking your departure. Put each appointment into your transport plan, including a car back if you don't feel up to walking afterward.

A reviewer on RealSelf described having the procedure done at the end of a Thailand trip. Your own departure date needs to fit the treating clinic's instructions and appointment schedule.

Once those dates are settled, choose a hotel that makes the repeated clinic trips easy. Recheck the route if the clinic gives you a different address for a follow-up.

Costs: From a Grab Ride to the Whole Trip

Budget for getting back as well as getting there. Include the procedure-day hotel ride and each follow-up, with room to replace a planned walk or rail journey with a car.

Check the price for the trip you're booking, and ask about any charge before accepting a clinic-arranged ride. Don't build a transport budget that only works if you walk every time.

Keep the treatment quote separate from those travel costs. Our Bangkok hair transplant cost guide covers treatment prices and what the clinics say they include.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grab a practical choice after a hair transplant?

Patients report using it for the ride back to the hotel and later trips. We'd choose a car and settle the pickup point before walking outside. Ask your clinic where to wait after surgery, then take your time entering so your scalp clears the door frame and doesn't rub against the headrest.

How far can I walk if I sweat easily?

Use whether you'll sweat as the decision rule. One patient called 14 minutes their maximum and switched to Grab because they sweated immediately. Bangkok Hair Clinic allows light walking that doesn't cause sweating; if even a short walk would make you sweat, choose a car and minimize outdoor waiting.

Should I choose a car or a motorcycle?

We'd choose a car while following early scalp-protection instructions. One patient made that choice to avoid the extra risk they associated with motorcycles, and Bangkok Hair Clinic advises against helmets during its early aftercare period. Check that you've selected a car when booking.

Can I wear a hat when I go out?

Use only a covering your treating clinic has approved, worn the way it shows you. HairTran tells patients to use its protective cap as instructed, and Bangkok Hair Clinic warns against tight headwear. Don't assume a familiar hat or bandana will avoid pressure and friction on the transplanted area.

What can I do besides stay in the hotel?

One patient described spending time in indoor places and taking cabs between them. Choose an outing your clinic allows, somewhere you can sit, and plan the return pickup before leaving. Avoid adding a hot walk or crowded train journey just to reach an indoor destination.
