When to Arrive Before a Hair Transplant in Thailand
In May 2024, someone planning a hair transplant in Thailand asked Reddit's hair transplant forum how many days early to arrive. u/PaceComprehensive830 added: "I'm from the East Coast of the United States so it certainly isn't a short flight, give or take about 26 hours including layovers."
Our planning advice is to land at least one full day before surgery, and two days or more if the trip runs close to a day door to door. The Thai clinic pages we read don't set a fixed arrival rule. So this is our judgment from what clinics publish and what patients report.
Our guide to hair transplants in Thailand covers the clinics and what they charge.
Two of the replies in that thread pulled in different directions. A commenter, u/theopilk, wrote: "You should at least get there 2-3 days early." u/eipotttatsch, who had a transplant at HairTran, wrote: "for me arriving a day early (from Europe) was totally fine."
Flight length may explain the gap between those two answers.
This page covers the days before surgery. The length of the whole trip is in our guide on how long to stay in Thailand.
How Many Days Before Surgery to Arrive
The clinic pages we read don't tell patients to land a set number of days early. Absolute Hair Clinic's pre-op instructions run on three timeline headings, "One week before surgery", "One day before surgery" and "On surgery day", with no line on when to fly in.
Bangkok Hair Clinic's FAQ covers recovery and session length. It doesn't give arrival advice.
What clinics do publish is a schedule. Those schedules run from surgery on the morning you land to a consultation the day before, and that consultation day is the smallest buffer we'd plan around.
| Your trip | Days to land before surgery | What it's built on |
|---|---|---|
| Short regional flight, small time difference | 1 day, used for the consultation | Clinic schedules with a consultation the day before surgery (Dr Wunny, Health Tours Thailand) |
| From Europe | 1 to 2 days | u/eipotttatsch found one day enough; the NHS says jet lag usually improves within a few days |
| 20 hours or more door to door | 2 to 3 days | u/theopilk's advice to someone facing about 26 hours; a traveler with 20+ hours of travel planned two days free |
This table is our own planning aid. Your clinic's schedule and your surgeon decide the real dates.
The first step: ask your clinic which day it wants you in for the consultation, then book a flight that lands by the night before.
Why a Buffer Helps After a Long-Haul Flight
The reasons in that thread come down to getting there on time and walking in able to handle a long day. The second part has some backing from a health body and from what clinics say about session length.
Flight Delays and Getting There
u/theopilk's first reason was the schedule. You need to "account for any flight delays", they wrote.
On a plan that lands the morning of surgery, any delay cuts into the procedure day itself. So a day in hand turns a late connection into an inconvenience.
Jet Lag and Being Rested on Surgery Day
The NHS says: "Jet lag is when your normal sleep pattern is disturbed after a long flight. It usually improves within a few days as your body adjusts to the new time zone."
The NHS page doesn't give a rule for how many days each time zone adds. So the flight-length advice on this page is our reading of patient and traveler accounts.
u/theopilk's second reason was rest. It "would be good to try and not go into the surgery just basically crashed from the travel," they wrote, and to "have a day or two to just sleep".
u/eipotttatsch saw it the other way: "You'll be on pain meds and with your eyes closed for most of the surgery anyway. No reason to be well rested."
The Procedure Is Long and Most Patients Are Awake
The American Academy of Dermatology says: "Most patients remain awake during the entire surgery and need only an anesthesia that makes the scalp numb. Some patients also take a mild sedative to help them relax."
So most patients are awake for the whole session. Here is how long Thai clinics and patients say that session runs.
| Source | What it says about session length |
|---|---|
| Bangkok Hair Clinic, shaven FUE | "typically takes 6-8 hours, depending on scalp condition, individual difficulty, and the number of grafts", with a 15 to 30 minute lunch break |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic, Thai homepage (our translation) | DHI about 4 to 8 hours, FUT about 3 to 6 hours, depending on the graft count |
| Dr Wunny | "The surgery usually takes 8-12 hours counting from your arrival time at the clinic." |
| Health Tours Thailand, package with Hair Restore by DHT Clinic | Around 6 to 10 hours, depending on the number of grafts |
| u/Any-Drawing2671, HairTran, August 2024 | "The entire procedure took 5 hours, not 7-8 as expected." |
| u/soi23, Bangkok, February 2024 | "About 12 hours!" |
Each figure is that source's own, for its own work, so they don't average into one number. We compare what clinics publish; we haven't visited these clinics or had a procedure at them, and we read the clinic pages quoted here between 27 September and 20 October 2026.
A day that long is the practical case for landing rested.
What the Days Before Surgery Usually Hold
The days before surgery aren't empty. Clinic schedules fill at least one of them with the consultation.
The In-Person Pre-Op Consultation
Dr Wunny writes: "If you are worried about the procedure, I highly recommend an in-person pre-operative consultation at least 1 day prior to the surgery so you are able to ask me questions without a rush." The same page offers an online consultation as the alternative.
Health Tours Thailand, a medical travel company that sells packages with Hair Restore by DHT Clinic, puts this on Day 1. Its package page says you visit the clinic "for an assessment and to discuss and agree upon the surgical plan, including the final number of grafts required."
The Medvoyal guide lists the same kind of Day 1: "Arrival, scalp assessment, graft-count estimate, and hairline planning".
The graft count and the hairline plan get discussed at this visit. That's a conversation to have with a clear head.
DHT Clinic told us in its email of 15 October 2026 that its fee includes the "Preoperative Consultation fee if sign in for the surgery".
Pre-Op Medical Checks and Blood Tests
HairTran's English site tells patients to "Complete an HIV test, which is required before every procedure."
DHT Clinic's quoted price excludes "HIV/hepatitis C blood tests and Covid ATK (฿1,300)", about $39, per the same email of 15 October 2026.
Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).
Health Tours says preoperative instructions and medication are handed over at the Day 1 assessment. Ask your clinic which tests it runs, on which day, and whether they're in your quote.
The Day Before at Absolute Hair Clinic
Absolute's "One day before surgery" list includes "No Alcohol and stop smoking", "Confirm your appointment" and "Clear the payment". It also asks you to have the consultation or collect antiseptic shampoo at the clinic that day.
It adds: "Make arrangements for someone to take you to and from the clinic because you have to take oral sedation in addition to local anesthetics."
A list like that is easier to work through on a day with nothing else in it.
Staying Close to the Clinic
u/eipotttatsch's other tip: "Just try to stay somewhere close to the clinic, as you might be a bit groggy post-op. And you might want to avoid extra stress."
A Bangkok Hair Clinic patient, u/Cool-Paper-218, wrote: "I stayed within walking distance from clinic (~750m /10mins)." Another, u/Elver_Galarga_82, wrote: "I stayed in a hotel 150 mt to the clinic, so I walked to it the day of the procedure."
u/L_Br_LN_07, a DHT Clinic patient, stayed about 30 minutes away with family. They wrote that "it was super easy though to just order a grab, they can even do this for you and pay cash."
Absolute's pre-op page also says: "Do not drive to the clinic on the day of surgery."
A buffer day lets you walk or ride the route to the clinic once before the morning it counts.
Prep That Starts Before You Fly
Some of the preparation starts well before you land. HairTran says: "Stop alcohol consumption and smoking at least 14 days prior to surgery to promote better healing and graft survival."
Thailand Hair Transplant Center, in Chiang Mai, writes: "Do not take any aspirin, vitamins, herbs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents or beta-blockers for 7-10 days before the surgery." Its instructions also say to avoid alcohol "for 1-2 days before the surgery", and they are that center's own rules, not a general standard.
Our Chiang Mai guide covers the clinics in that city.
At these two clinics the prep window opens 7 to 14 days before surgery. So most of it happens at home, before the flight.
Follow your own clinic's written list, and ask the doctor who prescribed a medicine before you stop taking it.
The Range: From Surgery on Landing Day to a Week Before
Here are the plans we found for the days before surgery, from clinics and from patients.
| Plan | Days before surgery | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fly in and go straight to surgery | 0 | Dr Wunny's "Quick Trip" |
| Consultation on the same day as surgery | 0 | Absolute's post-op instructions page |
| Arrive and consult, surgery the next day | 1 | Health Tours Thailand, Medvoyal |
| One day early from Europe | 1 | u/eipotttatsch |
| Two days to explore and settle in | 2 | u/Cool-Paper-218 |
| "at least" 2 to 3 days | 2 to 3 | u/theopilk |
| Met the doctor in the clinic about a week before (meeting date; landing date not given) | about 7 | u/soi23 |
The Zero-Buffer "Quick Trip"
Dr Wunny's stay guide lays out "The Quick Trip: 3 Days, 2 Nights". Its Day 1 reads: "Fly in and head straight to the clinic for surgery."
Dr Wunny's own take: "This is a bit intense. You'll be juggling travel, surgery, and recovery with very little downtime."
The two longer plans, 4 days and 8 days, both put "consultation and prep for surgery" on Day 1. The plans on that page don't put more than one day before surgery.
Absolute's post-op instructions page shows a same-day option too: "surgery (Or can wrap up the consultation in this day then followed with surgery)".
When One Day Is Enough
u/eipotttatsch flew from Europe, arrived a day early and found it "totally fine". One day also matches the clinic schedules that put the consultation on Day 1 and surgery on Day 2.
One day leaves little slack if a connection runs late. We'd pick it for a shorter route, or when the clinic has already done your consultation online.
How Flight Length Changes the Buffer
Travelers to Thailand describe the same pattern. In a r/ThailandTourism thread, u/zoe9620 wrote about "20+ hours of travel".
u/zoe9620 planned the trip so "the day we arrive and the next day have 0 plans, just in case we find ourselves in a vegetative state."
In the same thread, u/animateus said traveling west takes them about two days to get over. Their next line: "Travelling east is a completely different topic. It takes me, on average, a whole week to get back the usual self."
Another commenter wrote: "It's not about going there, you'll deal with it pretty easy. It's coming back, that's the real struggle." For the trip home, see our guide to flying after a hair transplant.
These travelers aren't transplant patients. With the NHS's "within a few days", they're why our planning table adds days as the trip gets longer.
Using the Buffer Days Against Jet Lag
The NHS says: "Get plenty of rest before you travel." It suggests going to bed and getting up "more like the time zone of the place you're travelling to" in the days before the flight.
After landing, the NHS advice is to "change your sleep schedule to the new time zone as quickly as possible" and "do not sleep during the day - only sleep at night time".
For the flight, it also says: "do not drink too much caffeine or alcohol - they can make jet lag worse". That fits the alcohol limits on clinic pre-op lists.
u/KoreanB_B_Q's advice in the travel thread: "Stay awake as late as you can, ideally so you're going to sleep when it's dark outside. It'll take a couple days to acclimate, but that's always helped me."
A Day-by-Day Plan for a Two-Day Buffer
This plan is our judgment. It combines the NHS advice, traveler accounts and the clinic schedules above, and your clinic's own times come first.
| Day | What happens | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1: land | Check in near the clinic, stay up to local bedtime, no plans | NHS, u/KoreanB_B_Q, u/zoe9620 |
| Day 2: consultation | Consultation, graft count and hairline discussed, pre-op tests and instructions, payment | Dr Wunny, Health Tours Thailand, Medvoyal, Absolute, HairTran |
| Day 3: surgery | Arrive at the appointed time for a long session, awake | Dr Wunny, Absolute, the session lengths above |
| Day 4: first check | Return for a wash and a check | Dr Wunny, HairTran |
Arrival and the Pre-Op Assessment
Day 1 is for getting to the hotel and getting onto local time. Day 2 is the consultation, the tests and the paperwork, with a full night of sleep before the operation.
If your flight lands late on Day 1, the consultation still has a day to fall back on. That slack is the point of the second day.
Surgery Day
Dr Wunny's guide says: "On the scheduled day, arrive by 8:30 AM or your appointed time." Absolute says: "Please report to the clinic on time." Thailand Hair Transplant Center says: "Arrive at the clinic at the time specified."
HairTran says: "Have a light breakfast on the day of surgery, but avoid tea or coffee, which can increase bleeding risk."
It also says: "Wear a button-down shirt to avoid disturbing the transplanted area when changing clothes after surgery."
The Day After: First Wash and Check
Dr Wunny's guide says: "The day after surgery, you'll return for a first hair wash and low-level light therapy (LLLT) to aid healing."
HairTran's Thai homepage says the same in its own terms (our translation): one day after the transplant, the patient comes back for a wound wash, a first check and advice on self-care.
After Surgery: The Days That Follow
This page stops at surgery, before hair transplant recovery begins. What comes after, and when you can fly, is covered in the stay guide linked at the top and the flying guide above.
Minimum Post-Op Stay
BHI Clinic's FUE page says: "We recommend our patients to stay in Bangkok, Thailand for at least 48 hours after FUE hair transplant because the grafts are still sensitive during this period."
So count those days after surgery on top of your arrival buffer when you book the flights.
What Thai Clinics Say About the Days Before Surgery
These clinics don't set a number of days to land early. Here is what each one does publish about the run-up to surgery.
| Clinic | What it publishes about the days before surgery |
|---|---|
| Dr Wunny | An in-person consultation "at least 1 day prior" if you're worried, or online; calls the same-day plan "a bit intense" |
| Absolute Hair Clinic | A one-day-before checklist; the consultation can also be on surgery day |
| HairTran | An HIV test before every procedure; no alcohol or smoking for 14 days; whole-trip guidance with no split before and after surgery |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Session length and recovery in its FAQ; no arrival advice |
| Thailand Hair Transplant Center (Chiang Mai) | No aspirin, vitamins, herbs, NSAIDs or beta-blockers for 7 to 10 days; "Arrive at the clinic at the time specified." |
| DHT Clinic | Its fee includes the pre-op consultation; blood tests and a Covid antigen test cost extra (email, 15 October 2026) |
When you book, ask for the consultation date and the surgery date in writing. Our booking guide covers deposits and the steps before you pay.
What Patients Say About Arriving Early
The 2 to 3 Day Answer
The 26-hour question drew three replies. The 2 to 3 day figure comes from one of them, and the thread doesn't say whether u/theopilk has had a transplant.
Their case rests on delays and long-haul fatigue: "If you've never done long haul travel before, it's very exhausting."
The Counterpoint: One Day From Europe
u/eipotttatsch had the transplant at HairTran and saw no reason to arrive earlier. Their view rests on the session itself: pain medication and eyes closed for most of it.
That's a patient flying from Europe. The person who asked was facing about 26 hours.
Real Trip Reports
u/Cool-Paper-218, who had a transplant at Bangkok Hair Clinic in July 2026, wrote: "I arrived in Bangkok 2 days prior to my procedure to explore and settle in."
u/Any-Drawing2671 had a session at HairTran in 2024 and wrote: "After the surgery I felt really good and walked to my Airbnb and actually worked for the rest of the day. I didn't feel dull or done or drained."
Some people see doctors in Bangkok before booking. u/Carl_lfc wrote: "I went to see 3 doctors in Bangkok about hair transplants they was all very similar with the amount of hair needed 2100-2700 plantations FUE."

Frequently asked questions
How many days before surgery should I land in Thailand?
The clinic pages we read don't set a rule. Our planning range is one day for a short regional flight, one to two days from Europe, and two to three days for trips of 20 hours or more.
One day matches clinic schedules with a consultation the day before surgery. The longer buffers follow forum advice and the NHS line that jet lag usually improves within a few days.
Should I arrive before the day of surgery?
We'd plan on it. Dr Wunny offers a same-day "Quick Trip" but calls it "a bit intense".
Arriving earlier gives you room for a late flight and a consultation without a rush. Absolute also allows the consultation on surgery day, so ask your clinic which schedule it expects.
Can I have the consultation on surgery day?
At some clinics, yes. Absolute's schedule allows the consultation on the day of surgery.
Dr Wunny recommends an in-person consultation at least a day before if you're worried, or an online one. The graft count and hairline plan get discussed at that visit, so decide whether you want that conversation on the morning of a long session.
Do I need blood tests before a hair transplant in Thailand?
HairTran requires an HIV test before every procedure. DHT Clinic's price excludes HIV and hepatitis C blood tests and a Covid antigen test, ฿1,300 (about $39), per its email to us of 15 October 2026. Ask your clinic which tests it runs, on which day, and whether they're in your quote.
Did patients stay within walking distance of the clinic?
Two did. One Bangkok Hair Clinic patient stayed about 750 meters away and another about 150 meters away.
A DHT Clinic patient stayed 30 minutes away and said it was super easy to just order a Grab. Absolute says not to drive on surgery day and to arrange someone to take you, because of the oral sedation.
Is a 3-day trip enough?
It can be done, but it leaves little or no buffer before surgery. Dr Wunny's three-day plan flies in on surgery morning.
HairTran says that for patients short on time, "a minimum of three days is advised to ensure adequate rest before traveling back home." Our stay guide covers the days after surgery.
