Body Hair Transplant: Who It Suits, Which Areas Work and What It Costs in Thailand
In April 2026, a patient on r/HairTransplants wrote up three consultations in Bangkok. "Context: I already had one transplant before and my scalp donor is quite limited at this point," they wrote. Only one of the three surgeons "directly addressed my limited donor and suggested a mixed approach (scalp + beard)."
It is covered here in our hair transplant guide. Yes, beard and body hair can be moved to the scalp, in what surgeons call a body hair transplant (BHT).
Beard hair is the most reliable source. Other body hair is much less predictable. Surgeons use body hair alone or alongside scalp grafts, and patients on Reddit report it mostly goes to the crown and mid-scalp for density.
What a Body Hair Transplant Is, and Who It Is For
An article on the ISHRS website (the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) says sources for body hair run "anywhere from the nape of the neck down to the top of the toes." It then splits them into two groups: "beard hair and the rest of the body."
That split matters more than anything else on this page. Beard hair behaves close enough to scalp hair to be planned with. The rest of the body is a gamble that surgeons test before they commit to it.
The reader this page is for has a thin or used-up donor area at the back of the head. The American Academy of Dermatology says a transplant needs "Enough healthy hair on your scalp that can be transplanted to the area that needs hair."
When that supply runs short, body hair is the next place surgeons look. The ISHRS article puts it simply: "If one has sufficient scalp resources, it is best to use these resources first."
How much your scalp can give, and how surgeons judge it, is covered in our donor area guide.
How It Differs From a Standard Scalp Transplant
The move is the same: follicles come out of a donor area and go into thinning scalp. What changes is the hair itself.
A 2017 review by Saxena and Savant in the Indian Dermatology Online Journal says "Body hair characteristics such as thickness, length, and hair cycle may not completely match to that of the scalp hair."
The ISHRS article gives the reason surgeons still reach for the scalp first. "Scalp hair is still most preferred because it grows consistently and resembles scalp hair since it is scalp hair."
Not every body hair qualifies, either. A 2021 paper by True in the Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery says "Not all body hair is suitable for transplantation."
One surgeon's 2016 report in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, by S. Umar, covers body hair transplantation by follicular unit extraction (FUE) in 122 patients.
Which Body Areas Can Be Used as Donor Sites
Beard: The Most Reliable Donor
The ISHRS article says "Beard hair is rarely in the telogen (resting) phase whereas other parts of the body may exhibit up to 60% of the hairs in the telogen phase."
The same article says "Beard hair transplants are far more consistent and will produce a yield typically between 60% and 100%."
Patients and clinic accounts on Reddit describe harvests from under the chin and below the jawline. One patient in India wrote that their surgeon "extracted beard below jawline and side locks."
Chest, Back and Abdomen
This hair is less dependable. A clinic account on Reddit, u/NimClinicOfficial, wrote that "beard hair is relatively reliable, but I can't really say the same about chest hair. Chest hair doesn't have the same structure as your scalp hair."
One patient in India who had three surgeries reported "800 from chest 70% of which failed." In the same post, they said beard hair "gave me 80% of the density over 3 surgeries." Those are one person's own figures, not rates you should plan around.
Arms and Legs
Arm hair is often finer, which is occasionally the point. The ISHRS article says "In the temple points, one might try arm hair because it is often finer than other sources of body hair."
One Patient's Mix
One Reddit post comes from u/jack6758, a patient in India with Norwood 7 hair loss. "So far, I've had two BHT procedures, using a total of 4,800 grafts (Norwood 7)," they wrote. Their breakdown also listed some scalp grafts. The body areas were:
| Area | Grafts reported |
|---|---|
| Chest | 2,300 |
| Beard | 1,000 |
| Back | 500 |
| Abdomen | 400 |
| Thigh | 200 |
Chest supplied the most grafts in that case. It says nothing about how chest grafts compare with beard grafts once they grow.
Who Is a Good Candidate: The Limited Scalp Donor Test
The ISHRS article lists "a lack of sufficient sources of hair on the scalp" as something that improves candidacy. It adds that "Ideal candidates for body hair transplants include those whose body hair most closely resembles the other hair in the recipient area."
It also says "Coverage, in general, is easier to achieve with scalp hair so this should be the first line of treatment for hair loss." So surgeons who follow that order hold body hair back until scalp grafts run short.
One patient on r/HairTransplants described that order. Their surgeon "refused to transplant beard hair until I run out of grafts from the scalp."
Bangkok Hair Clinic's Thai-language FAQ says that when the hair at the nape is thin, which it calls "Donor depletion," the doctor "may estimate the treatment at a lower density, so that the treatment is effective and appropriate" (our translation from Thai).
Hairsmith's Thai FUE page lists as suitable "People who have enough hair in the nape area to drill out roots for transplanting" (our translation). Its facial hair transplant page warns that forcing extraction when the back hair is already thin will "make the back hair thin to the point where it is clearly noticeable" (our translation).
Body hair only helps if you have it. One patient who had a large transplant in Turkey wrote: "I'm not a naturally hairy guy in general, so I don't think body hair was an option."
The scalp tests that decide whether surgery makes sense at all are in our guide to hair transplant candidacy.
How Much Beard Hair You Can Use Before It Shows
We found no published number for this, only forum talk. One r/HairTransplants poster wrote: "I have no experience but I've heard you can take roughly 1500 beard grafts from most guys without compromising the beard."
Another in the same thread wrote: "Heard you can take anywhere from 1500-3000grafts from beard (under chin or neck) I do believe they say it's mainly single graft so you use it for density." Both say they heard it. So treat it as a starting question for a surgeon, not a figure.
A clinic account on Reddit was more cautious. It wrote that "the number of grafts that can be harvested from the beard is quite limited, so they usually make only a small contribution to the overall hair transplant."
The same account added: "every beard graft taken is one you'll lose from your face. This can affect your facial appearance by leaving small gaps in your beard, especially on your cheeks and under your chin."
When a user on r/tressless asked whether a patient "won't be able to grow beard hair in the 2000 places that the follicles were removed," the answer was one word: "Yes."
A clinic account, u/Elithair_uk, wrote: "The good news is under the chin is about the safest place you could take them from. It's picked exactly because it stays hidden."
One poster warned against going too far. "I'd really recommend you don't over harvest. I've seen some really bad results of such," they wrote.
For some men the beard isn't spare hair. "My beard is extremely important to me. It's parts of my looks and identity since at least 10 years now," a patient wrote while weighing a beard-to-crown plan.
Decide how much beard you are willing to lose before the consultation.
Where Body Hair Goes: Crown and Mid-Scalp, Usually Not the Hairline
Patients on Reddit repeat the same placement rule. "Usually BHT gets placed in crown/mid-scalp rather than hairline for that reason," one wrote, after explaining that "chest/back hair is more limited since growth cycles differ."
The reason given is texture. The clinic account u/Elithair_uk wrote: "Beard hair is a bit coarser than scalp hair, so it blends best in the crown rather than up front at the hairline."
Another poster put the limit more firmly: "Beard hair is your next best option if donor is weak, but only for the crown/mid scalp for density."
It is a tendency, not a fixed rule. The ISHRS article suggests fine arm hair at the temples. One patient in India had a first session, mostly beard grafts, that "covered my conservative hairline and mid scalp."
Density has a ceiling with body hair. The ISHRS article says "densities beyond 36 grafts per square centimeter can result in near zero yield with body hair," and its author recommends transplanting body hair "at densities below 30 grafts per square centimeter."
How density is planned and measured on the scalp is in our density guide.
How the Procedure Works
The 122-patient series above took body hair by FUE, the method used on the scalp. The ISHRS describes FUE as "removing individual follicular units (natural clusters of hairs grouped in 1-4 hairs each)" using "micro punches that span from 0.7 to 1.2 mm in size."
It also says the procedure "varies from surgeon to surgeon in terms of setup, execution, sequence, instrumentation, staffing, anesthesia, etc." So ask how your surgeon runs a combined scalp and body session rather than assuming.
The ethics standard of the ABHRS, the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, says creating the extraction incisions "is a non-delegable act." So ask the clinic which steps the surgeon will do, and which staff will do.
Start With a Test Procedure
The ISHRS article advises a trial before a large body hair session. "The test procedure will evaluate the yield and the appearance of the body hair," it says.
It adds that "Growth is fairly predictable at three months so patients and their physician will know if desired results are attainable." For chest, back or leg hair, the test will evaluate the yield and the appearance of your own body hair.
Success Rates and What Success Looks Like
The figures below measure different things, so read them side by side rather than as one rate.
| Source | What it describes | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| ISHRS article | Beard hair yield | "typically between 60% and 100%" |
| ISHRS article | Non-beard body hair | "1 out of 4 individuals ... get a cosmetically improved result" |
| One patient, India | Beard over three surgeries | "gave me 80% of the density" |
| One patient, India | Chest grafts | "800 from chest 70% of which failed" |
The ISHRS article is blunt about non-beard body hair: "Failures include yields of zero %, very fine hair and sparse growth."
So set the goal accordingly. The AAD says "A full head of hair may be unrealistic, but a fuller head of hair can be the goal."
For u/jack6758, the Norwood 7 patient, success meant coverage. "I used it to cover the whole head including crown and lower crown," they wrote.
Others judge these results hard. Under one high-grade case on r/tressless, a commenter wrote: "Despite all that effort, you can still see the original outline of his NW7."
The True 2021 paper summarizes it this way: "Harvesting of beard and body hair follicles for transplantation can be an effective form of treatment for appropriate patients."
Body Hair vs Scalp Hair: The Trade-Offs
Texture and Curl
The ISHRS article says "some patients do not like the coarse, curly nature of the hair." It adds that the "contrast in appearance can be quite striking when the scalp hair is fine and straight and beard hair is coarse and curly."
It depends on the person. u/jack6758 wrote: "I think my body hair was straight to begin with and was not curly. So I don't think it changed."
How Long It Grows
The ISHRS article says non-beard body hair is "usually shorter in length and grow at a slower rate than scalp hair so typically growth is not much longer than 3 to 6 cm in length."
So it shapes the hairstyle you can wear. One poster, writing about beard grafts, said "not everyone will be a perfect candidate for this type of extraction, especially if their beard doesn't grow long and they want a longer hairstyle, but for a short hairstyle like a buzzcut, i can see it looking fine."
u/jack6758 wrote: "It grows at the same speed as the sides of my hair. But I never tried growing it out since it doesn't look good since it's thin."
The Hair Cycle
Outside the beard, the ISHRS article says up to 60% of hairs can be in the resting phase.
The ISHRS author recommends "that patients have anagen hairs transplanted." Anagen is the growing phase.
How Long It Lasts on the Scalp
We found no study that measures how long transplanted body hair lasts on the scalp. Hairsmith describes the usual scalp donor as "the area of permanent, strong hair that is not affected by the DHT hormone" (our translation from Thai), and we found no comparable claim for body hair placed on the scalp.
One poster summed up the trade: "It's a great supplement but not a direct replacement for scalp donor hairs."
When You See Results
For body hair, the ISHRS article says growth "is fairly predictable at three months." That is the checkpoint for a test procedure.
For hair transplants in general, the AAD says "between two and eight weeks after the surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out. This is normal." It adds that "By the third month, the hair may look thinner than before you had the transplant."
The AAD also says "Most patients see results between six and nine months after surgery. For some patients, it takes 12 months."
Pain and Recovery
The AAD says "Most patients remain awake during the entire surgery and need only an anesthesia that makes the scalp numb."
One patient had 6,400 grafts over two days in Turkey, taken from the scalp donor and the area under the chin. "While the surgery wasn't that bad (anesthesia shot pain is overblown imo), the recovery period is really rough," they wrote.
"Those first 10 days, with the swelling, and pressure build up in the donor area, it was hard to sleep," the same patient added.
A 2026 review of FUE complications in Frontiers in Medicine describes swelling "peaking around 2-3 days after surgery and resolving spontaneously within 5-7 days." That figure comes from scalp FUE series.
Complications and What Can Go Wrong
The main failure in body hair transplants is poor growth. The ISHRS article lists "yields of zero %, very fine hair and sparse growth," and warns that packing body hair too densely "can result in near zero yield."
The chest result from the patient in India, "800 from chest 70% of which failed," is that risk in practice. The same patient reported "virtually no visible scar" after three rounds of extraction from the cheek, sideburns and below the neck.
The other risk is to your face. As the clinic account above put it, beard harvesting can leave "small gaps in your beard, especially on your cheeks and under your chin."
The Frontiers in Medicine review says "Risk factors include a personal or family history of abnormal scarring, darker skin phototypes, and previous keloid formation." That review covers scalp FUE and doesn't study body sites.
Combining Scalp and Body Hair in One Plan
A 2020 paper by Garg and Garg on "combination grafting" of scalp and body hair says "The body hair follicles can be used to cover up the deficit."
Patients describe the same split. "I want to use my donor hair from the back of my head for the front and then body hair for crown/middle part of scalp simultaneously because I have a large portion to cover," one wrote in August 2026.
Another was offered a two-day plan. The surgeon "will cover my crown with the help from 1000 grafts from my beard, from the part under the chin ... and the rest with around 4500 grafts from my donor area at minimum."
The patient in India started with "3300 grafts- 1300 from scalp ( very thin donor ), 2000 from beard." So in that case the beard supplied most of the first session.
Large combined sessions raise their own questions about one long day against several shorter ones. As one poster put it: "It's different than 5k in one shot."
How Much a Body Hair Transplant Costs in Thailand
None of the Thai clinic websites we checked publishes a price for body hair. We found no body hair page at Bangkok Hair Clinic, Hairsmith or DHI Thailand, and HairTran's 2026 cost guide doesn't mention body hair.
One clinic gave us a figure in writing.
Confirmed by DHT Clinic in writing, 15 October 2026.
DHT Clinic in Bangkok told us by email that beard-to-scalp FUE costs ฿150 ($4.53) per graft. Shaven scalp FUE or FUT costs ฿123 ($3.71) per graft above 600 grafts, with a ฿78,000 ($2,350) minimum for 1 to 600 grafts. The clinic doesn't publish these rates on its website.
On that rate, 1,000 beard grafts would come to ฿150,000 ($4,530) (our arithmetic). Beard grafts cost ฿27 more each than shaven scalp grafts above 600 grafts, about 22 percent.
The clinic says the price includes the doctor's fee, the preoperative consultation if you book the surgery, the medications used in surgery, and post-operative care, including dressing changes or stitch removal. HIV and hepatitis C blood tests and a Covid ATK test cost ฿1,300 extra, and transport, accommodation and other medication aren't included.
That is one clinic's rate, not a Thailand average. For scalp grafts, patients report paying ฿36-123 ($1.09-$3.71) per graft across five Bangkok clinics (31 reports and quotes, 2023 to 2026).
Most reports at Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic and Hairsmith fall at ฿65-90 ($1.96-$2.72). Hairsmith publishes ฿80 ($2.41) per graft for standard FUE for 1,000 grafts or more, labeled 2025 pricing.
Ask every clinic for its body hair rate in writing, as a separate line from the scalp rate.
Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026).
Which Thai Clinics Do Body Hair Work
We compare what clinics publish and what they tell us in writing. We haven't visited these clinics.
Several Thai clinics publish beard transplant pages, but most of them describe moving scalp hair into the beard, which is the opposite procedure. The table separates the two.
| Clinic | What its own material says about body hair | Body hair price |
|---|---|---|
| DHT Clinic, Bangkok | Its services page lists "Body hair transplantation"; its only body page found covers moving scalp hair to the chest | ฿150 per graft beard-to-scalp, by email |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | Its Thai FAQ, answering whether another person's hair can be used, says your own cells can be taken "from hair in other parts of the body" for use on various parts of the body (our translation); no body hair page found | None published |
| Hairsmith | No body hair page found; its beard page covers moving hair into the beard | None published |
| Absolute Hair Clinic | Its beard page covers moving hair into the beard | None published |
| HairTran | Its 2026 cost guide doesn't mention body hair | None published |
| DHI Thailand | No body hair page found; its beard post covers moving hair into the beard | None published |
Patients run into the same gap. "I wanted to go to absolute hair clinic but don't think they do beard to head," one wrote in August 2026. That is a patient's belief, so ask the clinic directly.
What Patients in Thailand Report
The fullest Thailand account is the three-consultation thread from the opening. The poster summed up their position as "Limited scalp donor" with a "risk of overharvesting," and noted that "Beard can increase total available grafts."
They were also clear about the catch: "I know beard hair is different, so placement matters." Their notes put Dr. Laorwong at "~90 THB/graft" ($2.72) and Dr. Prima at "~100 THB/graft" ($3.02), without saying whether beard grafts would cost the same.
Varun Priolkar, who had a transplant at Absolute in Bangkok, wrote that his first plan kept the beard in reserve. "We decided on FUT/FUE combo procedure 4500-5000 initially and then around 2000 grafts using FUE/beard later," he wrote.
He added: "Not to mention that you could tap into the beard for even more grafts." He hadn't had beard grafts when he wrote the post.
We haven't found a first-hand account of a completed body-to-scalp transplant in Thailand. The detailed BHT results above come from patients in India and Turkey.
Finding a Surgeon Who Does Body Hair
Patients give similar advice. "Find a doctor who is capable of scalp and body hair transplant," wrote the patient in India with poor donor and high-grade hair loss.
"Worth finding a surgeon who specifically has BHT experience though," another poster wrote. A third said: "I also searched extensively for a doctor who specializes in beard-to-crown hair transplantation."
The ABHRS keeps a Physician Directory and the ISHRS has a Find a Doctor page. Our guide on how to check a surgeon's credentials covers what those listings show.
Questions to ask at consultation:
- Have you done beard-to-scalp or body-to-scalp cases, and can I see them at 12 months or later?
- Will you do a test procedure first?
- Which areas would you take from, and how many grafts, without leaving visible gaps?
- Where will the body grafts go, and where will the scalp grafts go?
- What is your rate per graft for body hair, separate from scalp hair, in writing?
- Which steps will the surgeon do, and which will staff do?

Frequently asked questions
Can a surgeon use my beard or body hair if I have little hair left at the back?
It can. Beard hair is the most reliable body source, and an article on the ISHRS website puts beard yield "typically between 60% and 100%."
Other body hair is far less predictable: the same article says only "1 out of 4" non-beard cases get a cosmetically improved result. Surgeons use body hair alone or alongside whatever scalp donor remains, and patients on Reddit report it mostly goes to the crown and mid-scalp.
How many grafts can I take from my beard?
No published figure settles this for one person's beard. Forum posters repeat that "roughly 1500" or "1500-3000" grafts can come from the beard, but they say they heard it. A clinic account on Reddit called beard harvests "quite limited" and warned of gaps on the cheeks and under the chin, so ask the surgeon to assess your beard density and give you a number.
Will my beard grow back where the grafts were taken?
No. When a Reddit user asked whether a patient "won't be able to grow beard hair in the 2000 places that the follicles were removed," the reply was "Yes."
A clinic account on Reddit wrote that the area under the chin is "picked exactly because it stays hidden."
Can chest hair be used, or only beard?
Chest hair can be used, but it is less reliable. A clinic account on Reddit wrote that chest hair "doesn't have the same structure as your scalp hair."
One patient in India reported "800 from chest 70% of which failed," while beard gave them most of their density. A test procedure, as the ISHRS article advises, shows how your chest hair grows before a large session.
How much does a body hair transplant cost in Thailand?
None of the Thai clinic websites we checked publishes a body hair price. DHT Clinic in Bangkok told us in writing on 15 October 2026 that beard-to-scalp FUE costs ฿150 ($4.53) per graft, against ฿123 ($3.71) for shaven scalp FUE above 600 grafts. That is one clinic's rate, so ask every clinic for its body hair rate in writing.
Where does beard hair go, the hairline or the crown?
Mostly the crown and mid-scalp. A clinic account on Reddit says beard hair is a bit coarser than scalp hair, so it "blends best in the crown rather than up front at the hairline."
It is a tendency, not a fixed rule. The ISHRS article suggests finer arm hair at the temples, and one patient's first session, mostly beard grafts, covered a conservative hairline and mid-scalp.
