FUT Hair Transplant Bangkok: Clinics, Costs, Scars and Recovery

If you're weighing a hair transplant in Bangkok and FUT is on the list, start with one r/HairTransplants poster who had it done there. The account is a generally satisfied one, and it still says this about the haircut: "I have my hair pretty short on the back and sides and you can see where the scar is."

That one line is most of the FUT decision. FUT means follicular unit transplantation: the surgeon takes a strip of scalp from the back of your head, divides it into grafts under magnification and closes the wound with stitches or staples. FUE takes the grafts out one at a time and leaves small scattered scars. FUT leaves one line, and how well it hides depends on how short you wear your hair (ISHRS FUT guide and scar page, from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery).

And yes, you can get it in Bangkok. Eight clinics and hospitals, from Hairsmith and DHT Clinic to MedPark, list FUT on their own sites. Hairsmith publishes a per-graft rate, MedPark publishes packages with a catch on who qualifies, and the rest show no FUT price on the pages linked below.

Which Bangkok Clinics Offer FUT?

Everything in the table comes from the clinics' own sites. We haven't visited them or had a procedure at any of them. The order isn't a ranking, and a service page doesn't mean a particular surgeon will take your case.

A FUT Listing Is Not a Confirmed Booking

Ask the clinic to name the surgeon, the branch and the method in its reply. That matters at BHI, which lists both a Bangkok and a Nakhon Pathom location (BHI service page).

Don't pick a clinic from a directory tag or an old case gallery. Get a current assessment from the clinic that would do the operation.

What Does FUT Cost in Bangkok?

Two of the eight publish numbers you can plan against. Hairsmith publishes a FUT rate per graft. MedPark publishes package prices, for Thai patients and foreign residents of Thailand only. There is no Bangkok FUT average, and we're not going to build one out of two clinics.

Dollars at THB 33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026). Totals are rounded to the nearest $10, per-graft amounts to the cent. Prices on this page, the patient quote included, were read from their sources on 25 September 2026.

One patient's DHT quotes. DHT's FUT page carries no price, but one r/HairTransplants poster comparing consultations there reported $2.41 (THB 80) per graft with Dr. Moo and $3.62 (THB 120) with Dr. Path. That's one person's quote, not a clinic rate (patient's comparison; the comments showed "7mo ago").

CosmoPrime's general table. It lists FUT at $0.91 to $1.51 (THB 30-50) per graft. Treat it as a guide, not a quote: the page title says 2025, and the clinic's service menu lists FUE, DHI and long-hair transplants, so confirm it books FUT at all before you count on that number (clinic cost guide).

Per-Graft Rates, Minimum Charges and Restricted Packages

Worked example: 2,000 grafts at Hairsmith's published THB 80 rate is $4,830 (THB 160,000). That's the per-graft fee only, before anything charged separately and before flights. The 2,000 is an example, not a recommendation.

Under 1,000 grafts at Hairsmith the $1,780 (THB 59,000) minimum applies, so price a small session from the minimum. With a package like MedPark's, compare the total and its terms. Dividing the price by the graft ceiling doesn't give you a rate the hospital has agreed to.

What the Written Quote Should Include

Get these in writing from each clinic:

• The operating surgeon, facility, method and proposed graft count.
• Whether the quote counts grafts or individual hairs.
• The minimum charge, and what happens to the bill if the graft count changes on the day.
• Which tests, anesthesia and medications are included.
• Whether the fee covers washing visits and donor checks, including any stitch removal.
• Whether platelet-rich plasma (PRP), supplements or other extras are optional and charged separately.
• The cancellation terms, and how assessment works after you return home.

MedPark's package, for example, covers doctor, nursing and hospital service fees, and excludes treatment for underlying conditions or complications (MedPark package). Another clinic's quote may not match that list, which is why you ask.

Keep flights, accommodation and local transport separate unless the written offer includes them. If a clinic proposes an extra treatment, ask what evidence it has before you agree to pay for it.

When FUT Suits You Better Than FUE

FUE means follicular unit excision: one unit at a time, with a punch. FUT takes them as a strip. The ISHRS lays out the difference (method guide and scar page):

Price doesn't settle the choice. Hairsmith charges the same per graft for FUT and FUE (Hairsmith FUT page). Other clinics might not. Ask for both rates.

Donor Hair, Scalp Flexibility and Future Hair Loss

FUT is worth considering when your scalp is loose enough for a strip, the donor area is good and you can live with a linear scar. A tight scalp or a history of bad scars or poor healing counts against it. Thinning across the donor area can rule out a transplant of either kind, and where your hair loss is heading belongs in the plan (ISHRS FUT guidelines).

Ask the surgeon why FUT suits your donor area, how any previous surgery changes the options, and what's still possible if your hair loss keeps going. Ask whether FUE, a combination, or no surgery at all would make more sense.

One r/HairTransplants poster put their reason simply: "I went FUT mainly for donor preservation." That's one person's reason, not proof that FUT saves more usable donor hair for everyone. Ask what it means for your donor area.

Your Haircut and Your Time for Follow-Up

The poster in the opening can see the scar with short back and sides. Another FUT patient on the same subreddit, at nine months, says the opposite: "Only my hairdresser knows" (second patient account). Neither tells you how often a scar shows. Both tell you your haircut belongs in the consultation.

So bring a photo of your usual haircut. Ask exactly which areas would be trimmed and which follow-up visits you'd need. The word FUT doesn't promise an unshaven procedure or a hidden recovery.

The FUT Scar: What to Settle Before Surgery

The strip wound is stitched closed and heals into a line. The line stays. That belongs in the decision before surgery.

Ask about it as directly as you ask about price. Where will the incision sit? What does the surgeon consider a bad scar? What happens if you're unhappy with it later?

Closure Technique Doesn't Make the Scar Invisible

Trichophytic closure adjusts the wound edge so hair can grow through the scar line. It's meant to hide the scar better. It doesn't remove it.

A wound closed under too much tension can widen the scar, which is one reason scalp flexibility and healing history come up in the assessment.

Ask which closure the surgeon proposes and why. A technique name doesn't tell you what your own scar will look like.

Ask to See Healed Donor Scars

Ask for donor photos from the proposed surgeon's own FUT cases. Ask when they were taken, how long the hair was, and whether the lighting matches. Look for cases close to your haircut and your surgical history.

A natural-looking hairline in the clinic's photos doesn't show you the back of the head. Ask for both. If scar revision comes up, ask what the surgeon would assess first and what it can't fix.

What Happens During FUT Surgery

Assessment and Planning Before You Travel

Send the clinic the photos it asks for, and describe your goals, your medical history and any previous procedures. Photos start the conversation. Scalp flexibility and the final donor plan need an examination in person (ISHRS FUT guidelines and WIH assessment information).

Ask who confirms the final plan and what happens if it differs from the photo estimate. Would you be offered another method? Could you take more time? What happens to your payment?

One r/tressless poster asked it bluntly: "do u actually get a say or do u just have to trust their call and go with it??" So settle that before you pay for flights.

Strip Removal, Closure, Graft Preparation and Placement

The scalp is numbed. The surgeon removes the donor strip and closes the wound. The strip is divided under magnification into grafts, small pieces of tissue containing hair follicles. Recipient sites are made and the grafts go in. Some of the graft preparation can run while the wound is being closed.

Ask which member of the team does each part. The name on your consultation reply doesn't tell you who will close the wound or place the grafts.

Planning Recovery When You're Flying In

Settle Stitch Removal Before You Book the Flight Home

Each clinic publishes its own schedule, and they don't match:

Ask about wound checks even if the stitches dissolve. Confirm when the first wash and the donor review happen, and book the stitch-removal appointment if there is one. If removal will happen at home, arrange it before you leave.

None of that is clearance to fly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says flying after surgery can raise the risk of blood clots, and it sets no FUT-specific day (CDC medical-tourism guidance). Ask your surgeon when you can fly.

Arrange Care for After You Leave Thailand

An Australian on r/HairTransplants planning FUT in Thailand asked the practical question: "who to go to in regards to the stitches being taken out (I was going to check with my GP)". Don't assume your GP will do it. Ask before you fly, and have a name.

Before you leave Bangkok, take your treatment records and written aftercare instructions with you, and know who will examine the wound in person at home if something isn't right.

Ask the operating clinic how to reach it, what to do about an urgent concern, what happens out of hours, and what an extra review costs. If it can't assess a problem remotely, who can see you locally?

Wound Recovery and Hair Growth Are Different Timelines

Stitch follow-up is about the donor wound. Hair growth takes longer. The American Academy of Dermatology says: "Most patients see results between six and nine months after surgery. For some patients, it takes 12 months." (AAD transplant information)

That's general guidance for any transplant, not a promise about yours.

How to Choose a Bangkok FUT Surgeon

Look for Relevant Cases and Check the Evidence

Ask for the proposed surgeon's own FUT cases, healed donor scars included, with follow-up timing and cases close to your donor area and goals. Check any claimed qualification with the body that issues it. The ISHRS surgeon-selection checklist has the questions on training and experience.

Read independent patient accounts alongside the clinic's material. A glowing early review tells you about communication and the visit. It can't show the outcome, so look for follow-up posts from the same patient.

Read the mixed ones too. One FUT patient's one-year update says they feel better and adds: "Sometimes I feel a little bit disappointed with the density". That's more useful than a star rating, and it doesn't tell you a failure rate or a cause.

Confirm Who Does Each Step and Where Follow-Up Happens

Ask who evaluates your donor area, removes the strip, closes the wound, prepares the grafts, makes the recipient sites and places the grafts. Then ask who handles your reviews afterwards. The ISHRS checklist puts it as one question: "Who will be involved in performing my surgery?"

Get the facility and the named surgeon into the written plan. How clearly a clinic answers these questions tells you as much as its price does.

Get a FUT-Specific Clinic Assessment

If you want to ask about a FUT clinic assessment, share your goals, your travel dates and whether a clinician has already recommended FUT. Include your usual haircut and any previous transplant.

Ask for a written donor plan, an itemized quote and the follow-up schedule before you arrange the trip. Whether FUT suits you is a surgeon's call after an examination.
