Hair Transplant in Vietnam vs Thailand: Costs, Clinics and Travel for Western Patients
When Hair Restoration Network poster Wingtsun chose a hair transplant in Thailand, the search centered on the doctor. In a post dated 26 October 2023, they wrote that the "decision wasn't based just on price" (Hair Restoration Network).
For a hair transplant in Vietnam versus Thailand, we'd compare the named surgeon, written price and follow-up plan before choosing the destination. Huan MD in Ho Chi Minh City publishes a DHI price; Bangkok offers several named clinic comparisons, but neither country wins for every budget or travel plan.
Who Does the Work, and What to Ask
Vietnam: what the clinic says and what to ask
Huan MD Clinic's own pages describe Dr. Huan Nguyen's role differently: one says "implantation supervision," while others say "Every graft placed by Dr. Huan Nguyen" and "performed exclusively by Dr. Huan - no technicians." Ask the clinic in writing who performs extraction and who places the grafts in your procedure.
Vietnam's government law index identifies Law No. 15/2023/QH15 as the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, effective 1 January 2024. That page identifies the law; it doesn't verify an individual clinic or doctor.
Ask for the doctor's practicing-license details and the facility's operating-license details, including the issuing authority.
Get both sets of license details before paying a deposit.
Thailand: compare the same questions
HairTran says Dr. Pukpinya Jangjetriew personally performs its critical procedural steps. Ask the clinic to name those steps in your treatment plan, including what the rest of the team will do.
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, or ISHRS, says graft harvesting should be "physician-driven and performed." It also says graft placement is done "most often by the trained staff."
Questions to send before paying a deposit
Send the same questions to each clinic so you can compare the answers directly:
1. Which doctor will treat me, and what are the doctor's and facility's license details? 2. Who extracts the grafts, makes the recipient-site incisions and places the grafts? Which steps does the doctor supervise? 3. What technique and graft count are you quoting, and will any part of my head be shaved? 4. What does the written price include, and what are the deposit, refund and rescheduling terms? 5. When are my first wash and local reviews, and who handles questions after I return home?
So ask the doctor to explain any difference between two proposed graft counts. Buying the larger number doesn't resolve why the plans differ.
Cost Comparison: What Clinics Publish and Patients Report Paying
We compare published clinic information and patient accounts; we haven't visited these clinics. Clinic prices read 17 October 2026 at Huan MD.
Vietnam clinic-published prices
Huan MD Clinic publishes the following figures for Ho Chi Minh City. It uses DHI, short for direct hair implantation.
| Huan MD's published figure | USD as published | Source |
|---|---|---|
| DHI rate | $1.50 per graft | Huan MD Clinic |
| Overall hair-transplant range | $2,800 to $6,800, depending on technique, graft count and shaven or unshaven treatment | Same clinic page |
These are Huan MD's own dollar figures, so no currency conversion has been applied.
The per-graft line and the overall range answer different questions. So ask which figure applies to your procedure and whether the unshaven option changes the rate.
For someone comparing Hanoi with Bangkok, these figures belong to a Ho Chi Minh City clinic. They aren't a Hanoi quote.
Thailand: Published Clinic Rates and Patient Reports
DHI Thailand publishes these Bangkok bands, labeled as its 2025 data. They are broad graft-count bands, so ask for the total at your own count.
| DHI Thailand graft band | Published THB figure | Converted USD |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 to 2,000 grafts | About THB 50,000 to 100,000 | About $1,510 to $3,020 |
| 2,000 to 4,000 grafts | About THB 100,000 to 200,000 | About $3,020 to $6,035 |
Dollars at THB 33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026); converted totals are rounded.
The broader Bangkok patient-reported range is THB 36 to 123 per graft, or $1.09 to $3.71, across five clinics. That covers 31 reports and quotes from 2023 to 2026, rather than a current price offered by every clinic.
Most reports at Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic and Hairsmith fall at THB 65 to 90 per graft, or $1.96 to $2.72. Our Thailand cost guide separates the clinic figures and patient reports in more detail.
Dated patient reports: Vietnam and Thailand
A dated account can tell you what one person paid and what their bill covered. Keep that separate from the clinic's present offer.
| Country and source | Procedure described | Amount reported |
|---|---|---|
| Thailand: gemini, Hair Restoration Network, 13 April 2025 | Absolute Hair Clinic, 2,000 grafts, fully shaven | Compare with the THB 65 to 90 patient-reported band above |
| Vietnam | The linked Vietnam thread is a prospective inquiry, not a completed-treatment account | No patient-paid figure reported in that thread |
In the Hair Restoration Network post, gemini described 2,000 grafts, fully shaven, and reported five days of LLLT, cleaning and bandage care included; LLLT means low-level laser therapy.
That account gives you a useful question for another quote: how many local care visits does the total cover? It doesn't give you a current Absolute price or an inclusion list for another Bangkok clinic.
What each price includes
Huan MD Clinic names a post-operative kit containing medications, shampoo and ointments. Its scheduled check-ins are at one week and at one, three, six and 12 months.
| Item | Huan MD's published offer | gemini's Absolute account, posted 13 April 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Care supplies | Medication, shampoo and ointments named | Bandage care named |
| Local care | Scheduled check-ins named; confirm which require attendance | Five days of laser treatment, cleaning and bandage care reported included |
| Longer follow-up | Check-ins through 12 months | Not stated in the cited price passage |
| Hotel, flights and airport transfers | Not stated in the cited inclusions | Not stated in the cited price passage |
| Translation | Not stated in the cited inclusions | Not stated in the cited price passage |
So treat anything not stated as a question for the quote. A care kit doesn't tell you how many hotel nights are covered, and a follow-up schedule doesn't tell you whether every appointment can happen online.
Before You Book Flights: Make the Clinical Plan and Travel Plan Match
Confirm these four details before buying non-refundable travel.
> 1. The clinic names your doctor and says who performs each step. > 2. Your written quote states the technique, graft estimate, inclusions and deposit terms. > 3. The clinic schedules your first wash and local reviews, and names your contact after you fly home. > 4. Your entry permission, arrival date, hotel booking and return flight fit those appointments.
Use the clinic's schedule to choose your departure date. Huan MD's stated stay and HairTran's stated stay differ. Ask each clinic for written care instructions before you decide whether your own plan needs a longer stay.
If you're already traveling in Southeast Asia, send the clinic your onward itinerary before committing. Ask what needs to change if your local review falls after your planned departure.
Pricing the Trip From the US, UK, Australia or Canada
For a procedure-only comparison at 2,500 grafts, ask Huan MD to confirm how its published $1.50 per-graft rate applies to your procedure. The Bangkok patient-report band above gives THB 65 to 90 x 2,500 = THB 162,500 to 225,000.
Build the total as the written procedure quote plus return flights, accommodation for the agreed nights, transfers and any separately charged care. So keep each charge in its original currency until you convert the whole comparison at one dated rate.
| Home country | How to build your Vietnam versus Bangkok total |
|---|---|
| United States | Start with your actual departure airport and compare return itineraries for the clinic dates. Add the hotel nights required by each treatment plan before comparing totals in USD. |
| United Kingdom | Price both trips from the same departure airport. Keep any GBP airfare and hotel quote separate from the procedure's USD or THB amount until conversion. |
| Australia | Price the Vietnamese city where your clinic operates. A Sydney-Hanoi fare cannot stand in for travel to a Ho Chi Minh City appointment; compare the matching Bangkok itinerary. |
| Canada | Use your Canadian departure airport and agreed return date for both quotes. Keep CAD travel charges separate from USD clinic prices until conversion. |
If your trip starts elsewhere in Southeast Asia, calculate from there, even if your passport is American, British, Australian or Canadian. Use our cost-by-country comparison for broader procedure prices, then add your own itinerary.
Travel, Visa, Language and Follow-up
Entry rules by passport
Vietnam's Immigration Department says its e-visa can be valid for up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry. Its published nationality list includes the US, UK, Australia and Canada.
That establishes an application option for all four passports, not a requirement that every traveler use it. The official portal directs applicants to its current application sites; follow that route and check the conditions for your passport and visit.
Thailand's Department of Consular Affairs lists revised visa-exemption measures effective 15 September 2026. Don't plan against a blanket stay allowance for all four passports.
For full British citizen passports, GOV.UK states up to 30 days under the tourism exemption. That tourism wording doesn't answer which entry category covers your planned treatment, so confirm the purpose of the trip with the Thai authorities.
For US, Australian and Canadian passports, confirm the current Thai entry category and permitted stay with the relevant Thai embassy before booking.
Flights, arrival timing and the stay the clinic asks for
Vietnam Airlines lists Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City at 8 hours 45 minutes and Sydney to Hanoi at 9 hours 55 minutes. It warns that journey times vary, so use your selected itinerary when fixing arrival and appointment times.
The British Airways FAQ gives approximately 11 hours 45 minutes from London to Thailand. These airline examples cover different origins and can't establish which destination is faster from your home airport.
Huan MD Clinic says most patients stay five to seven days. Ask where the first wash and medical review fall within your own booking.
Appointment timing varies.
HairTran recommends two weeks for the entire trip. That covers the consultation and procedure, plus initial recovery. It describes three days as a minimum for patients with limited time, rather than its main recommendation.
Ask the treating doctor to confirm your return-flight timing.
A minimum stay doesn't tell you whether your own review is complete. Avoid treating a three-day minimum as the right stay for your surgery. Book the hotel against the agreed appointment dates, including any nights before surgery.
Language and remote follow-up
HairTran says its team communicates in Thai and English. Its homepage describes sending photos for doctors to review and arranging a video call with a doctor.
Huan MD states that remote follow-up continues for 12 months. Confirm who will speak English during the consultation and aftercare, since an English website alone doesn't identify your clinical contact.
Ask both clinics who answers after you return home, how to reach the doctor, and what happens if photos aren't enough. ISHRS's virtual-consultation guidance recognizes phone, text, email and video consultations but says they "do not substitute for direct patient contact" and that "in-office visits are essential for confirming the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical plan."
If you expect to need frequent in-person help after returning to the US, UK, Australia or Canada, discuss that before paying. Ask the treating doctor what local support you should arrange and which concerns would require an examination.
What Real Patients Say: Vietnam and Thailand
Vietnam patient accounts
The Hair Restoration Network thread about 3,500-4,500 grafts in Vietnam is a prospective patient's inquiry. Author Vietnamtransplant18 wrote "I'm looking to get a hair transplant in Vietnam" and said the clinics that quoted in Canada and Turkey "also recommended I believe 3500-4500 grafts" (Hair Restoration Network).
The post displays 31 March without a year. It doesn't describe a completed procedure or an amount paid, so it can't answer what treatment in Vietnam was like afterward.
For a clinic you're considering, look for a dated treatment diary that identifies the doctor and explains local checks and contact after the patient went home.
Thailand patient accounts
In a post dated 29 September 2023, defiance79 wrote that Dr. Pukpinya was "doing all the incisions herself" and described "hanging around for 4 days" (Hair Restoration Network). Ask how the clinic would schedule those local days for you.
In a post dated 7 May 2025, Shaba wrote that Dr. Pukpinya "made all the incisions" and "handed it over to her trusted technicians." The author wrote that "patients come in daily for washes, checks, and consultations" (Hair Restoration Network).
On 23 March 2024, EasyRoader wrote: "I stayed on for another 4 days and went back every day for washing and laser treatment" (Hair Restoration Network). Daily return visits belong in the hotel and transport plan, even when the procedure itself is already paid for.
What an anecdote can and cannot establish
A patient account can explain the author's bill, clinical team and follow-up visits. It can't predict your hair transplant results, but it can give you a precise question to ask before booking.
Thailand vs Vietnam at a Glance
| What you're comparing | Vietnam example | Thailand examples |
|---|---|---|
| Published price evidence | Huan MD's USD rate and total range above | DHI Thailand's published bands, plus separate Bangkok patient reports |
| Doctor and staff disclosure | Huan MD's pages say "implantation supervision," "Every graft placed by Dr. Huan Nguyen" and "performed exclusively by Dr. Huan - no technicians" | HairTran names Dr. Pukpinya for critical steps; patient accounts describe technician involvement |
| Technique named | Huan MD publishes a DHI offer | DHI Thailand publishes DHI bands; the Bangkok patient-price comparison covers FUE |
| Documented inclusions | Huan MD names a care kit and scheduled check-ins | gemini reports local care included at Absolute in April 2025 |
| Flight and stay evidence | Sydney airline examples; Huan MD gives its own stay guidance | London airline example; HairTran gives its own stay guidance |
| Entry source | Vietnam Immigration Department's e-visa portal | Thai Consular Affairs and confirmation from the embassy for your passport |
| English communication | Confirm the named clinical contact's language | HairTran explicitly publishes Thai and English communication |
| Follow-up details | Huan MD publishes remote follow-up and scheduled checks | HairTran describes photo review and doctor video calls |
FUE means follicular unit excision, removing individual follicular units for transplantation. An FUE hair transplant can vary in setup and staffing between surgeons, as ISHRS notes.
Who Each Option Suits
Vietnam may suit you if
Ho Chi Minh City is practical for your trip, Huan MD's published DHI pricing fits your budget, and the clinic answers the role and license questions in writing. Confirm the price for your graft count and shaving preference before treating the advertised rate as your total.
If you're already in Southeast Asia, compare the extra travel and hotel costs from where you are. If you want Hanoi, obtain a Hanoi clinic's named-doctor plan and quote before choosing flights.
Thailand may suit you if
You want to compare several Bangkok price records and discuss a plan with a clinic that explicitly publishes English-language communication. HairTran also describes how its doctors can review photos and arrange calls once you're abroad.
For US, UK, Australian and Canadian readers, the practical choice starts with the actual departure airport and time available for local reviews. If those dates don't work, a lower procedure price won't make the treatment plan fit your trip.
Neither option is a shortcut around due diligence
We'd choose between written plans only after the clinic has named the doctor, explained the clinical roles and priced the agreed procedure. The local appointment schedule and contact route from home should be part of that decision.
If you want help comparing the questions in your clinic quotes, contact AsiaPatient with your proposed city, graft estimate and travel dates.

Frequently asked questions
Should I compare Vietnam and Thailand by clinic or by doctor?
Start with the named doctor and the written treatment plan. Wingtsun's account describes choosing doctors rather than clinic names, while Shaba's account shows why you should ask separately about incisions and the team's work. Then compare the total price and the follow-up schedule you can attend.
Is 3,500-4,500 grafts the right amount for a transplant in Vietnam?
That number comes from quotes Vietnamtransplant18 received in Canada and Turkey, not from a Vietnam clinic or an assessment of your scalp. Ask the clinician to explain the proposed count, the areas being treated and why that plan fits you.
Will the named doctor perform every step?
Ask for a step-by-step answer. Huan MD's own pages say Dr. Huan Nguyen places "every graft" and describe procedures as surgeon-performed with "no technicians," but its FAQ describes "implantation supervision." Ask who performs extraction and who places the grafts in your procedure.
How many days should I allow for washes and checks?
Use your clinic's agreed schedule. Huan MD says most patients stay five to seven days, while HairTran recommends two weeks for the whole trip and gives three days as a time-constrained minimum. EasyRoader's four extra days describe that patient's arrangement, not a return-flight rule for everyone.
Does the transplant price include aftercare?
Ask which appointments and supplies are included. Huan MD lists a care kit and scheduled check-ins; gemini reported five days of laser treatment, cleaning and bandage care included at Absolute in April 2025. Get your own written inclusion list, including any care that will cost extra once you're home.
