Hair Transplant Korea vs Thailand: Seoul or Bangkok for a Western Patient?

B-suke wrote about Hairsmith on note, November 30, 2025: "I wanted to handle aftercare online, so that level of support was an important point." (Translated from Japanese.)

If you're comparing a hair transplant in Korea with treatment in Thailand, we would choose by the named doctor's role, technique, full trip cost, and follow-up.

The decision in brief: Korea and Thailand suit different priorities

Start with two clinics willing to explain your procedure in writing. A country-level price range won't tell you who performs the extraction or who answers a clinical question once you're home.

Your priorityWhat should decide Seoul versus Bangkok
A fixed budgetCompare the same graft count and technique, then add flights, accommodation, and separately charged care.
Keeping your hair unshavenGet the exact shaving plan from each clinic. Woomchan, HairTran, and Hairsmith publish non-shaven options.
Traveling from the US, UK, Australia, or CanadaPrice the actual departure airport and dates against each clinic's appointment schedule.
Speaking English throughoutConfirm who handles the consultation, consent discussion, and clinical questions afterward.
More follow-up supportCompare early checks and the written plan for contact after departure.

The choice can change when the clinic answers those questions. A lower procedure price may leave less room in your budget once you add the required nights and any separately priced services.

Who performs the work, and what to ask before booking

Ask for the doctor's name before paying a deposit. Then ask which person performs each part of the procedure, including the work done after the consultation ends.

Korean licensing and clinic claims in the Republic of Korea

Korea's Medical Service Act, in its official English text, says: "Any non-medical personnel shall not perform medical practices." The text defines medical personnel through licenses granted by the Minister of Health and Welfare, including physicians and nurses.

That wording doesn't identify the person doing each step at your chosen clinic. So ask for the physician's license details and a task breakdown for your appointment.

Woomchan describes its surgeon extracting and transplanting grafts during non-shaven FUE, with hair-follicle separators preparing them. Its description doesn't assign every task, so get the remaining roles in writing.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, or ISHRS, says surgical hair-restoration procedures "must be performed by a properly trained and licensed physician." Its position includes donor harvesting, hairline design, and recipient-site creation among surgical tasks.

Thai clinic claims and doctor involvement

Thailand's Medical Profession Act B.E. 2525 (1982) restricts medical practice to medical practitioners. It lists exceptions for certain supervised or authorized practitioners.

The law doesn't establish that a named surgeon personally performs every transplant task.

ISHRS describes graft placement as occurring "most often by the trained staff." Ask separately about making incisions, extracting grafts, preparing them, and placing them.

A low price alone isn't proof of bad work. So we would ask both clinics the same questions:

Non-shaven FUE, FUE, and DHI: compare the published offering, not a promised outcome

Follicular unit extraction, or FUE, removes individual follicular units. ISHRS describes variation between surgeons in the procedure's setup, instruments, staffing, and sequence.

Woomchan, in Seoul's Gangnam district, describes its non-shaven method as leaving both the donor and recipient areas unshaved. Ask whether that description applies to the procedure proposed for you.

If a quote uses DHI, or direct hair implantation, ask the clinic to explain the extraction and implantation steps in plain English. Have it state what will be shaved or trimmed, the planned graft count, and who performs each step.

HairTran and Hairsmith also publish non-shaven FUE prices in Bangkok. You can compare those offers with Seoul without assuming that the same label means the same shaving plan.

Cost side by side: what clinics publish and what patients report

We compare what clinics publish and what patients report; we haven't visited these clinics. The figures below distinguish a clinic's general guide from its own rate and from a patient's reported payment.

Clinic prices and offers in this section: read 17 October 2026.

Korea: published clinic prices in KRW

Woomchan publishes the following ranges in Korean won, or KRW. Both are general guides to Korean costs, rather than a personal Woomchan quote; the overall guide is labeled 2025.

Clinic-owned sourcePublished guide figureUSD conversion
Woomchan: overall cost guideKRW 6,000,000 to 15,000,000Not shown
Woomchan: non-shaven FUE guideKRW 3,000 to 7,000 per graftNot shown

Neither figure tells you the final price for your graft count or itemizes your stay. So ask the clinic to quote the proposed operation in KRW, with the technique and included services beside it.

Thailand: published clinic rates and patient reports

Bangkok has both published clinic rates and patient-reported prices. Keep the two separate when comparing a Seoul offer with a Bangkok offer.

ClinicPublished standard figurePublished non-shaven FUE figure
HairsmithTHB 80 per graft, about USD 2.41, for at least 1,000 grafts; labeled 2025 pricingTHB 120 per graft, about USD 3.62
HairTranStarting price of THB 102,000, about USD 3,078THB 100 per graft, about USD 3.02

Thai dollar conversions use THB 33.14 = USD 1, from European Central Bank reference rates dated 22 September 2026.

These are starting figures or published rates. So get a quote for the graft count and technique you need.

Patients report paying THB 36 to 123 per graft, about USD 1.09 to 3.71, across five Bangkok clinics. That covers 31 reports and quotes from 2023 to 2026, rather than a current rate offered to every patient.

Most reports at Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic, and Hairsmith fall at THB 65 to 90 per graft, about USD 1.96 to 2.72. Our Thailand cost guide explains the clinic figures and patient reports behind those ranges.

What each price includes

Woomchan's guides don't itemize an individual offer for flights, hotel, transfers, interpretation, medicines, or remote follow-up. An unlisted service needs a written answer before you can put a cost beside it.

Maxwell publishes a personal translator, a next-day shampoo and doctor check, and virtual check-ins at 1, 6, and 12 months. Those are Maxwell's arrangements; they don't come with Woomchan's guide price.

Hairsmith says its price includes 12 months of hair-growth medication and describes follow-up visits every three months for one year. Ask how those visits work if you live abroad and whether your quoted aftercare can be delivered remotely.

Have both clinics mark consultation, anesthesia, medicines, the first wash, interpretation, hotel, and transfers as included or separately charged. Ask for the price of anything charged separately; an unanswered item stays unknown.

Put the two written quotes on the same terms

Copy these fields into your comparison before choosing a clinic. Keep the original currencies visible so you can check the conversion and the amount you will pay.

Get matching written answers before comparing the totals.

A quoted graft count also needs to match the proposed technique. If the clinics recommend different plans, ask each doctor to explain the difference before treating the totals as prices for the same operation.

Korean VAT refund for foreign patients

Don't deduct the special foreign-tourist cosmetic-medical value-added tax, or VAT, refund from a 2026 procedure budget. The statutory provision applied to eligible services supplied no later than December 31, 2025.

A release on the National Assembly Library website confirms that the special provision expired and was no longer applied. Ask for the final amount payable, without subtracting a refund advertised for an earlier year.

Worked trip cost from the US, UK, Australia, and Canada

For a 2,500-graft Bangkok example, the reported THB 65 to 90 range gives 2,500 x THB 65 to 90 = THB 162,500 to 225,000. That's about USD 4,903 to 6,789 at THB 33.14 per dollar, dated 22 September 2026.

This is our arithmetic on patient reports, not a clinic quote. Woomchan's guide puts 2,500+ grafts at KRW 10,000,000 to 15,000,000 or more. That is a guide to Korean costs, not a Woomchan quote, so ask for a written quote before comparing it with the Bangkok example.

Your full trip calculation is: procedure quote + return flight + accommodation for the agreed nights + separately charged items. Count an included service once, and ask the clinic for its appointment schedule before choosing the hotel checkout and return flight.

Medical tourism still needs the same written price and care details as any other medical trip.

United States

For Bangkok, start with the procedure example above or your actual clinic quote, then add your return airfare and accommodation total. For Seoul, use the clinic's written KRW quote and add the same categories for its schedule.

Korean Air publishes a New York-Seoul fare page and says fares change with real-time availability. Use your own departure airport and travel dates; a New York offer doesn't price a trip from elsewhere in the US.

Confirm the required early checks before selecting the return date. Check your passport's Korean entry requirements and the Thai tourist-exemption conditions below before booking either itinerary.

United Kingdom

Keep your flight and room quotes in GBP until you convert the full budgets to one currency. Add them to each clinic's procedure quote, plus any separately charged medication, interpretation, or transfers.

Thai Airways publishes London-Bangkok offers and warns that displayed fares may no longer be available when booked. A low headline fare is only useful if its dates leave room for the clinic's appointments.

Price the accommodation through the final agreed check in both cities. Confirm the entry route for your passport and treatment trip before paying for the flight.

Australia

Build an AUD budget for each destination using your departure city. Put the converted procedure quote beside the return airfare, the room total for the clinic's schedule, and any separately priced services.

Get the follow-up schedule before deciding which trip needs fewer nights. If later appointments require an in-person visit, ask how the clinic handles patients who have returned to Australia and what another visit would cost.

Check the passport requirements below for both destinations. Choose the itinerary that fits the agreed appointments and your available time off; a country label doesn't provide that answer.

Canada

Mark every dollar figure as CAD or USD before adding anything. Start with the KRW or THB procedure quote, then add a return flight from your departure city and accommodation for the confirmed schedule.

Keep separately charged care and transfers visible in both budgets. Ask who will answer clinical questions from Canada, in which language, and whether an advised in-person review would require another overseas trip.

Confirm the Korean entry route and Thai exemption conditions for your passport. Neither city's complete travel total is fixed until you have dated flight and accommodation quotes.

Visas, language, and follow-up after you fly home

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that, since 15 September 2026, its 30-day visa exemption for tourism covers passport holders of 60 countries and territories. It also says the exemptions apply to tourism only, so check the appropriate category if your treatment trip does not fit those conditions.

K-ETA means Korea Electronic Travel Authorization. The official notice extends the temporary exemption for eligible countries and regions through December 31, 2026, Korean Standard Time.

That notice doesn't list the four passport nationalities individually. Check your passport through the official process before booking, and confirm which entry permission fits your trip.

For follow-up, ask who answers clinical questions rather than assuming the booking coordinator does. Get the contact method and language in writing, along with the clinic's process if it advises an examination after you're home.

Maxwell's published next-day check gives you an appointment to plan around. It doesn't tell you that the next day is the right departure date for your case.

So ask the clinic for the full stay schedule before booking your return.

What patients who chose Korea and Thailand say

The consultation, the doctor's role and follow-up after leaving come up in accounts from both destinations. The useful details are who answered the patient's questions, who was present during the procedure, and how the patient planned contact after leaving.

Korea patient reports

On Tressless Community, January 29, 2026, u-BurgerBooty39 wrote that they "ultimately chose Korea based on how the consultation process was handled and the level of medical involvement." The clinic wasn't named.

Use the consultation to test whether you can discuss the actual operation comfortably. A reply about available dates leaves different questions unanswered from a reply explaining who will perform your extraction.

Thailand patient reports

If you want follow-up after you fly home, ask the clinic whether remote checks are included in your offer.

Varun Sinai Priolkar wrote on January 24, 2025: "Dr. Ratchathorn was present throughout and was closely monitoring everything," apart from brief absences the writer presumed were other consultations. For your own procedure at Absolute, ask which steps the doctor performs personally as well as which she supervises.

A previous patient's appointment schedule can help you frame questions. Have your clinic set your own schedule before using it to book the trip.

Who Korea suits, and who Thailand suits

Korea can suit you if a Seoul clinic offers the non-shaven procedure you want, explains the doctor's role, and gives you a workable follow-up plan. Budget against its final written price without counting on the expired VAT refund.

Thailand can suit you if a Bangkok clinic's proposed technique and complete trip cost fit better. Its published rates and patient reports give you figures to question a quote against, while the individual offer determines what you would pay.

For US and Canadian readers, compare the actual departure airport and keep USD and CAD distinct. For UK and Australian readers, do the same calculation in GBP or AUD using the dates each clinic can accommodate.

If you need substantial follow-up, choose by the clinic's written care plan and your ability to attend any required visits. If another overseas visit would be unaffordable, reconsider either trip before committing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hair transplant in Korea cost?

Woomchan publishes an overall Korea guide range and a separate non-shaven per-graft range, shown above in KRW. Those guides don't price your individual case. Get a written quote with the graft count, technique, tax treatment, and included care before adding flights and accommodation.

Does the doctor perform extraction and implantation?

Ask the clinic to name the person doing each step. ISHRS distinguishes surgical tasks from graft placement, which it describes as often performed by trained staff. A doctor's name on the website doesn't give you the task allocation for your procedure.

Can I have a hair transplant without shaving?

Woomchan publishes a non-shaven offering, and HairTran and Hairsmith publish non-shaven FUE rates. Ask each clinic whether your proposed procedure leaves both areas unshaved or involves any trimming. Get the answer against your own graft count.

Can foreign patients claim Korea's cosmetic-medical VAT refund in 2026?

Don't count it in your budget. The special provision covered eligible services supplied through December 31, 2025. Ask for the final payable price.

Do I need K-ETA for a hair transplant trip?

Check your passport's eligibility through the official Korean process. The temporary K-ETA exemption runs through December 31, 2026, for eligible countries and regions, but the extension notice doesn't individually list US, UK, Australian, and Canadian passports. Confirm the appropriate entry permission for your trip.

What happens if I need help after flying home?

Get a named contact, the language used, and a written follow-up schedule before paying. Ask who answers clinical questions, what remote reviews cover, and what happens if the doctor advises an in-person examination. Include any separately charged care or further travel in your decision.
