Hair Transplant in Mexico vs Thailand: Costs, Travel and Follow-Up
If you live in the US or Canada, Mexico is the nearby option to weigh against a hair transplant in Thailand. Neither country wins overall: compare the named doctor, your full trip cost, and how you'll get follow-up after returning home.
A starting package price and a rate per graft answer different questions. So get the proposed technique and graft count before comparing them. Then add the cost of reaching the clinic and staying for its appointments.
We'd also price the possibility of going back. A clinic that suits your budget for the first trip may be difficult to reach again if your doctor wants an in-person review.
For a US or Canadian reader, test Mexico against the actual Bangkok itinerary you would book. UK and Australian readers should make the same comparison from their own departure airport, rather than adopt a North American patient's route.
Who Does the Work, and What to Ask Each Clinic
Mexico, verify the doctor and the clinic before comparing a quote
Ask for the doctor's full name and cédula profesional number, the professional registration number. Start the registration check through the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), Mexico's education ministry, and match the record to the person proposed for your procedure.
Get the surgical roles in writing before paying a deposit.
Ask both Mexican and Thai clinics:
- Who makes the extraction incisions and the incisions where grafts will go?
- Which other steps will that doctor perform, and which will named staff perform?
- Which technique do you recommend for my case, and why?
- What does the written quote include and exclude?
- Who handles concerns after I return home, and when might I need an in-person appointment?
Thailand, compare the same surgical-step answers
The Medical Council of Thailand has a doctor lookup by first name and surname, in Thai or English. Use the name of the doctor assigned to your procedure.
FUE stands for follicular unit excision. It removes individual groups of hair follicles. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) says harvesting should be "physician-driven and performed," while graft placement is done "most often by the trained staff."
The American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) describes extraction and recipient-site incisions as non-delegable. Its guidance also allows extraction incisions by another licensed medical practitioner where local rules permit.
Those are professional-body positions. Ask the clinic to distinguish making incisions, removing grafts, and placing them, rather than answering only that a doctor supervises the procedure.
Cost Comparison of Published Prices and Patient Reports
Mexico clinic-published prices, currency preserved
TJ Hair System publishes a starting package price in US dollars. Dr. Espinosa Custodio publishes Mexican peso rates per follicular unit, the groups of follicles being transplanted, with a minimum charge.
We compare what clinics publish; we haven't visited these clinics or had procedures there.
Mexican clinic prices and offers below were read October 17, 2026. Peso conversions use MXN 18.4930 = USD 1, the Banco de México FIX rate dated October 16, 2026; divide the peso figure by 18.4930.
| Clinic and location | Published price and label | Converted USD | What to establish before comparing |
|---|---|---|---|
| TJ Hair System, Tijuana | FUE from USD 3,950 | USD 3,950 as published | Final quote follows a doctor's review; confirm the proposed graft count and inclusions |
| Dr. Espinosa Custodio, Mexico City | Shaven technique: MXN 65 per follicular unit | USD 3.51 per unit | Minimum charge applies |
| Same clinic | Unshaven techniques: MXN 75 per follicular unit | USD 4.06 per unit | Confirm what is trimmed |
| Same clinic | Technique labeled UFUE: MXN 100 per follicular unit | USD 5.41 per unit | Ask which procedure that label means for your case |
| Same clinic | Minimum MXN 85,000; MXN 110,000 after a previous transplant | USD 4,596.33; USD 5,948.20 | A minimum is the lowest bill, not the price for every graft count |
| Same clinic | Follow-up and progress-control consultation: MXN 1,500 | USD 81.11 | Separately listed on the tariff page |
The minimum matters if you're comparing a small procedure. So ask for the total against the proposed graft count, including any consultation charge, before comparing it with a package.
If you want unshaven work, compare that technique on both quotes. A shaven rate at one clinic and an unshaven rate at another won't tell you which charges less for the procedure you want.
Thailand Clinic Rates and Patient Reports
Thai clinics publish their prices in different formats. Hairsmith publishes ฿80 (USD 2.41) per graft as 2025 pricing, while CosmoPrime's general table lists ฿40-70 (USD 1.21-2.11) per graft for standard FUE.
HairTran publishes a starting procedure price of ฿102,000, about USD 3,080. These clinic-published figures were read September 23, 2026; our Thailand hair transplant cost page has the clinic-by-clinic source detail.
Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, September 22, 2026). Converted Thai totals are rounded to the nearest USD 10; per-graft figures are rounded to cents.
The HairTran starting figure doesn't specify the same job as the Mexican minimums. Get a quote for your own procedure before treating the difference between those headline amounts as money saved.
What the price includes, and what it does not
Accommodation can change the comparison, but only if it covers the nights you'll need. So ask for the hotel dates and the last planned clinic appointment together.
| Clinic | Published inclusions and unanswered costs |
|---|---|
| TJ Hair System | Names transport, meals, medications, and follow-up. Confirm the final package after the doctor's review, including any hotel arrangements. |
| Dr. Espinosa Custodio | The tariff lists a follow-up consultation separately. The tariff page lists no hotel or transfers beside the transplant rates. |
| Esthetic Hair Cancun | Names operation, hotel, and transfers. No package price is published. |
| Hairsmith, CosmoPrime, and HairTran figures above | Hairsmith lists 12 months of hair growth medication and follow-up visits every 3 months for a year. HairTran lists post-operative medicines, a post-care kit, 3 months of oral medication, and follow-up appointments. Neither lists a hotel or transfers. CosmoPrime's general price table lists no inclusions. |
Cancun's inclusion list gives you something concrete to request in the quote, even though it doesn't give a total. Ask which hotel nights it covers, and whether additional appointments cost extra.
Don't add a second hotel allowance to a package that already covers your booked nights. Do add any nights outside that package, and any airport or clinic transfer it excludes.
Patient-reported prices
These are individual historical payments. None of these reports supplies a complete, comparable flight-and-stay budget for both countries.
| Patient, source, and posting date | Clinic and reported payment | What the amount covers |
|---|---|---|
| DoubleTalkinJive, Hair Restoration Network, April 4, 2024 | Neopel: around USD 4,500 flat rate, which the poster said did not depend on graft count, for close to 3,000 grafts in summer 2023 | Reported procedure payment; no complete trip total |
In Bangkok, patients report paying ฿36-123 (USD 1.09-3.71) per graft across five clinics, from 31 reports and quotes spanning 2023 to 2026. That range describes those accounts, with different dates and procedures; it isn't a current quote from every clinic.
Use patient payments to prepare questions about your own quote. Keep the procedure date and technique beside the number, especially when comparing an older strip-procedure payment with today's FUE price.
Pricing the Trip From the US, Canada, UK or Australia
A complete trip total needs your departure airport, travel dates, and the clinic's appointment schedule. Until those are set, the calculation is the written procedure quote plus return airfare, uncovered accommodation, and local travel.
Price a possible return consultation separately. Ask the clinic which concerns it can assess remotely and which could require you to come back before deciding that a package's follow-up provision covers what you need.
United States
For a San Diego arrival followed by treatment in Tijuana, ask where the clinic pickup starts and ends. Your quote needs to cover your own arrival, hotel, and return transfer.
For Bangkok, use the same departure airport and the stay requested by your chosen clinic. Compare the total journey and cost on the itineraries you can book, including connections and any nights needed around appointments.
Canada
If you're considering a US arrival airport followed by a land crossing, compare it with arriving in Mexico by air. The Government of Canada says: "You should travel to Mexico by air to avoid criminal incidents at international land border crossings."
Build the Bangkok comparison from the same Canadian departure airport. A one-way reward fare can't stand in for a return cash fare; include both directions and keep points separate from money you'll pay.
United Kingdom
Compare Mexico and Bangkok from your own UK departure airport. A San Diego arrival doesn't establish what a UK trip will cost, or whether a connection through the US fits your documents and schedule.
Match each itinerary to the consultation and final planned check at that clinic. A cheaper ticket is only useful if its dates leave room for those appointments.
Australia
Price the whole itinerary to the Mexican clinic's city, alongside the Bangkok itinerary.
Ask both clinics for the stay they want for your procedure before selecting the fare. Apply the same test to a possible return visit, using the journey you would have to make.
Does the Total Trip Change the Choice?
United States: Mexico may fit if your actual itinerary costs less and leaves enough time for the clinic's appointments. If you prefer a Bangkok doctor, compare that full trip with the Mexican quote before deciding the extra travel is affordable.
Canada: Compare an air-arrival option for Mexico with Bangkok, using the Canadian advice above. Keep any potential return trip in the decision, especially if regular in-person follow-up matters to you.
United Kingdom: Use the full-trip calculation for each clinic. Neither a Mexican package price nor a Thai per-graft rate settles the choice without the return fare and uncovered nights.
Australia: Compare the transit requirements as well as the fare. Compare the proposed procedure and total cost. Check that you can manage its follow-up from home.
Travel, Recovery and Going Back
Official travel information
The US Department of State advises: "Get all billing, pricing, and medical procedure details before agreeing to any medical care." Its Mexico advice also tells patients to confirm emergency medical facilities and the qualifications of the professionals involved.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says: "Make sure you can get any needed follow-up care in the United States." Arrange that care before travel rather than assume your overseas clinic can handle every concern from a distance.
For Canadian travelers to Mexico, the government says the passport must be valid for the expected stay. Immigration decides the authorized length; the tourism maximum of 180 days isn't automatic.
For full British citizen passports, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) says tourists don't need a visa for Mexico. The passport stamp states the permitted days, and visitors may need evidence of a return ticket, accommodation, and funds.
The FCDO's Thailand guidance says visa-exempt tourism stays are up to 30 days. It also says foreign nationals must complete a digital arrival card before arrival.
Confirm the entry permission appropriate to your passport and planned medical visit with the destination's authorities. Tourism rules quoted for a British passport don't establish the requirements for a US or Canadian passport.
How the distance changes follow-up
A quote that includes "follow-up" still needs an appointment plan. So ask who answers after you leave, how to contact them, and which checks require attendance at the clinic.
If returning would be difficult, discuss care at home before booking. Include the cost and availability of that care when deciding whether you can manage the procedure abroad.
A patient's successful phone contact is useful to ask about, but your own agreement needs a named contact and instructions. Ask what happens if that person is unavailable and whether follow-up appointments carry a separate charge.
What Real Patients Say About Mexico and Thailand
Mexico patient accounts
The dated Mexico reports on this page are payment reports, in the cost section above. Keep the proposed technique and staffing names with the quote. Ask how any change will be explained and agreed with you before treatment.
Thailand patient accounts
Shaba's May 7, 2025 Hair Restoration Network account reported that Dr. Patty made all the incisions and handed implantation to trusted technicians. The poster wrote that patients come in daily for washes, checks, and consultations.
Falling's April 20, 2025 account said the doctor made the excisions and incisions, while "grafts were harvested and implanted by a technician."
Ask your clinic to break down each surgical step rather than leave you to infer staffing from a review.
BryInThe619 on Hair Restoration Network, February 28, 2024, wrote: "I do not recommend going into a surgical procedure without consulting the doctor first." Confirm the consultation date before booking a flight that could leave you without time for it.
What these accounts can and cannot answer
Patient reports describe individual experiences with travel, communication, staffing, payment, and aftercare. They can't establish a clinic-wide outcome rate or tell you which procedure is medically appropriate for you.

Who Each Option Suits
Mexico may suit
Mexico may fit a US or Canadian reader whose booked route makes the trip affordable and returning practical. That advantage needs to survive the complete quote, the clinic's required appointments, and the official advice for the route.
If you want unshaven work, Dr. Espinosa Custodio's separate tariffs give you named techniques to ask about. Have the clinician confirm what suits your case and what the total includes before comparing with Thailand.
Thailand may suit
Thailand may fit if you prefer a particular clinician after comparing their proposed procedure and responsibilities. Keep enough budget and time for the full trip, with a follow-up plan you can use from home.
UK and Australian readers should compare their own itineraries. For every origin, a lower per-graft figure only helps the budget once the proposed graft count and uncovered travel costs are included.
Neither choice is automatic
We'd choose between written clinic plans before choosing between country labels. Discuss suitability with a qualified healthcare professional, then compare the complete cost and the care you can access after returning home.

Frequently asked questions
Who will perform the incision, extraction, placement, and follow-up checks?
Ask the clinic to name the person responsible for each step in writing. The ISHRS distinguishes harvesting from placement. ABHRS guidance names extraction incisions and the incisions for graft placement as steps for the physician of record. A statement that a doctor supervises the procedure doesn't answer each of those questions.
Does the quoted price include the hotel, pickup, a first wash, or post-op visits?
It varies by clinic and quote. TJ Hair System names transport, meals, medications, and follow-up. Esthetic Hair Cancun's Cancún page names the operation, hotel, and transfers. Ask for the hotel nights, transfer endpoints, first wash, and appointment charges to appear separately in your written quote.
Will I need daily in-person washes or checks before leaving?
Ask your treating clinic for its schedule. Shaba wrote that patients come in daily for washes, checks, and consultations at HairTran, but one account doesn't establish what you'll need. Set the return flight after the clinic confirms which appointments it wants you to attend.
Should I arrive early enough for a consultation and recovery time before flying?
Arrange the consultation and follow-up dates before buying flights. BryInThe619's account describes why consultation timing matters, but it doesn't establish a minimum stay. Ask your treating clinician when you should arrive and when you can travel home after your procedure.
What happens if I have a concern once I am home?
Before booking, get a named clinic contact, instructions for raising a concern, and a plan for care where you live. Ask which issues can be discussed remotely and which need an examination. The CDC advises arranging access to needed follow-up care at home before traveling.
