Hair Transplant in Bangkok vs Phuket: Which City Should You Choose? (2026)
One r/HairTransplants poster spent a week at Kata Beach before having surgery in Bangkok. For a hair transplant in Thailand, we'd start with Bangkok for its wider documented clinic choice; Phuket suits someone who has selected a surgeon there and can keep beach activities separate from recovery.
The patient wrote, "I decided to do a week in Phuket (Kata Beach) before my operation which was great!" Their Bangkok stay then included daily washing and review at the clinic, according to their r/HairTransplants account.
The Short Answer: Bangkok vs Phuket at a Glance
We'd choose Bangkok if comparing surgeons and reading independent patient accounts are your priorities. Choose Phuket when a clinic fits your case and its follow-up schedule works with your accommodation.
| Decision | Bangkok | Phuket |
|---|---|---|
| Documented choice | Eight named clinic businesses below, plus a larger directory presence | Four named businesses with published hair-transplant services |
| Price evidence | Patient reports across five clinics, alongside some published clinic rates | A mix of packages and per-graft offers, with gaps |
| Recovery setting | Patients describe nearby hotels, clinic washes, and air-conditioned transport | A resort stay can work, but swimming needs to wait |
| Follow-up planning | Several patient accounts describe return checks | Get the branch's visit schedule before choosing a hotel |
| Who it suits | Someone still comparing surgeons and techniques | Someone already comfortable with a particular Phuket surgeon |
The city decision also affects the order of your holiday. If swimming is part of the trip, put it before surgery: Phuket clinic PHD tells patients to avoid swimming for one month.
How Many Hair Transplant Clinics Does Each City Actually Have?
The useful comparison is the named clinic set below, alongside what the directories list.
Bangkok: the deep bench
The documented Bangkok set includes Absolute, HairTran, Hairsmith, DHT, Bangkok Hair Clinic, CosmoPrime, DHI Thailand, and Max Hair. That gives you eight businesses to investigate, with different price formats and levels of patient discussion.
RealSelf showed 12 Bangkok hair-transplant listings on 4 October 2026. Its separate FUE directory showed eight results on 9 October 2026, so the search category changes the count.
A listing helps you find a name. So you still need to confirm who operates, whether they handle your type of case, and where your follow-up visits happen.
Phuket: a smaller set
Four businesses publish material indicating hair-transplant services in Phuket: Max Hair Thailand, MP Hair Clinic / Morepure Clinic, PHD Clinic, and Esthetic Hair Thailand. Their published techniques and price details appear below.
RealSelf's Thailand directory showed 13 listings on 4 October 2026, with just one in Phuket. The review shown for that Phuket entry concerned rhinoplasty and breast revision, so it doesn't help you judge a hair-transplant procedure there.
That directory count doesn't mean Phuket has only one clinic. It means you have fewer independent accounts to work through on that particular site.
Bangkok vs Phuket: What It Costs
What Bangkok patients report paying
Patients report paying ฿36-123 per graft across five Bangkok clinics (31 reports and quotes, 2023 to 2026), as detailed in our Thailand cost guide. Most reports at Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic and Hairsmith fall at ฿65-90 per graft.
Those ranges describe reported payments and quotes over several years. A graft is a small unit of hair-bearing tissue, so your total also changes with how many units the surgeon plans to move.
A HairTran patient discussing a promotion in 2023 warned that it might no longer apply.
What Phuket clinics publish
Max Hair publishes a FUE-MAX promotional package, but the page doesn't state a graft count or say which branches qualify. So confirm both before treating it as a Phuket quote.
Morepure's group site publishes two different offers: a general hair-transplant course and Short Hair DHI. DHI means direct hair implantation, using an implanter pen to place grafts; the general course's price line doesn't name a technique.
PHD publishes no price. Esthetic Hair describes packages in US dollars, but it doesn't publish a per-graft baht figure you can put beside Bangkok's reported rates.
The Bangkok vs Phuket price comparison
| Clinic or comparison group | Figure | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Five Bangkok clinics | Patient-reported ฿36-123 ($1.09-$3.71) per graft | 31 reports and quotes from 2023 to 2026 |
| Absolute, Bangkok Hair Clinic, Hairsmith | Most reports fall at ฿65-90 ($1.96-$2.72) per graft | A narrower reported range at these named clinics |
| Max Hair Thailand | Published ฿89,000 (about $2,690) FUE-MAX promotion | Graft count and Phuket branch eligibility aren't stated |
| MP Hair Clinic / Morepure | Published starting price of ฿100 ($3.02) per graft | Nine-month course including platelet-based plasma treatment; technique unspecified on the price line |
| MP Hair Clinic / Morepure | Published ฿60 ($1.81) per graft for Short Hair DHI | Includes the group's stated nine months of care |
| PHD Clinic | No published price | Ask for a written quote |
Max Hair's promotion and MP's general course were read 4 October 2026. MP's separate Short Hair DHI price was read 25 September 2026.
Dollars at ฿33.14 = $1 (European Central Bank reference rates, 22 September 2026). Converted totals are rounded to the nearest $10.
These figures don't establish that Phuket or Bangkok is cheaper overall. A package without a graft count can't be compared directly with a per-graft rate, and a nine-month care offer needs an explanation of which visits you can use from overseas.
How both compare with home-country prices
For a 2,500-graft example, Bangkok's narrower reported range gives ฿162,500-225,000: 2,500 multiplied by ฿65-90. At the stated exchange rate, that's $4,900-$6,790 for the procedure calculation.
So compare that with a written quote at home, then add your flights and accommodation. If you're comparing US, UK, or Australian clinics, keep their quote in its original currency until you calculate the full trip cost.
For a city-level hair transplant cost comparison, get both clinics to quote the same graft estimate and spell out medication, washing, and follow-up charges.
Named Clinics in Each City
We compare what clinics publish and have not visited them.
Bangkok clinics
| Clinic | What you can compare |
|---|---|
| Absolute Hair Clinic | Named on our Thailand hub |
| HairTran | Published FUE and non-shaven pricing; patient accounts describe clinic washing |
| Hairsmith | Published standard and non-shaven rates |
| DHT Clinic | Patient reports include FUT and no-shave procedures |
| Bangkok Hair Clinic | A July 2026 patient account includes PRP as an add-on |
| CosmoPrime | Its general price table lists FUE, DHI, and FUT |
| DHI Thailand | Publishes DHI estimates organized by graft-count bands |
| Max Hair Thailand | Lists a Bangkok branch and several techniques |
Absolute, HairTran, Hairsmith, and DHT are also the Bangkok clinics named in our Thailand hub. The longer list gives you more consultation options, without implying that every clinic has the same amount of independent evidence.
Phuket clinics and what they publish
| Clinic | Published service | Detail to settle before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Max Hair Thailand | Lists FUE, DHI, Long Hair, and Non-Shaven FUE | Its Phuket branch is at 87-89 Tilok Utit 1 Road; confirm the surgeon and applicable offer |
| MP Hair Clinic / Morepure | Lists Phuket / Morepure as a branch, with Short Hair DHI and Long Hair DHI in its menu | Ask how the advertised course works for an overseas patient |
| PHD Clinic | Advertises FUE and DHI in Phuket | Request the graft plan and price in writing |
| Esthetic Hair Thailand | Advertises DHI in Phuket | Confirm the operating surgeon and follow-up dates |
Esthetic Hair lists hotel accommodation, airport transfers, a patient coordinator, and follow-up consultations in its package (read 4 October 2026). So ask how many nights and which journeys the quote includes before booking separate accommodation.
FUE, DHI and FUT: What Each City Offers
FUE and DHI appear in both cities' published clinic material. The documented FUT options here are in Bangkok; Phuket FUT availability isn't confirmed.
FUE
FUE means follicular unit excision: individual units of hair are removed from the donor area for transplantation. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) describes this individual-unit approach, which differs from removing a strip of tissue.
HairTran and Hairsmith publish Bangkok FUE pricing. Max Hair and PHD list FUE among their services connected to Phuket.
DHI
DHI describes placement with an implanter pen. You can have FUE harvesting followed by pen implantation, so ask about both stages when comparing offers.
HairTran and Hairsmith say they include an implanter pen at their FUE price. Morepure sells a separately named Short Hair DHI service, so the word DHI alone doesn't tell you whether a clinic charges extra.
FUT
FUT means follicular unit transplantation using a strip of donor tissue. The ISHRS explains that the incision is closed with sutures or staples and the strip is dissected into individual grafts.
CosmoPrime lists FUT in its Bangkok price table, and DHT has patient-reported FUT quotes. If FUT is your preferred option, start with a consultation that confirms availability and the plan for removing stitches after you return home.
No-shave options and the surcharge
HairTran publishes ฿100 ($3.02) per graft for non-shaven FUE, while Hairsmith publishes ฿120 ($3.62).
A 2024 patient discussion describes a hospital quoting double for an unshaven head. Ask your shortlisted clinic for both versions of its quote and a description of any trimmed area, because there isn't one surcharge that applies across the two cities.
How to Choose a Clinic in Either City
The non-negotiables
Get the operating doctor's name before paying a deposit. A multi-branch business's name doesn't tell you who will assess your scalp or operate on your chosen date.
Get a written plan for the proposed graft count and your follow-up visits. You need to know whether you can complete those checks within the trip you're considering.
Red flags
Pause if the clinic won't identify the doctor or explain which staff perform each step. One r/HairTransplants poster raised that concern while looking at Max Hair's website.
An unclear package also needs answers before you pay. If the graft count or branch eligibility is missing, ask for it in the quote; a low price alone doesn't prove poor work.
Questions to ask every clinic
Ask how the clinic arrived at your graft estimate and when you'll agree on the hairline design. One HairTran patient described two hours of administration and photos before the procedure, so allow time for the consultation steps as well as surgery.
Ask what the quoted amount includes and what could change after the in-person assessment. Then ask who handles washing, which checks require you to return, what aftercare you can use remotely, and how to contact the team from home.
Who actually operates
Ask separately about extraction incisions, the incisions where grafts will go, and graft placement. Those are different jobs, and "doctor-led" doesn't describe the division of work.
The American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS) treats extraction and recipient-site incisions as non-delegable surgical acts in its standards for certified doctors. The ISHRS says trained staff most often place grafts.
Use those distinctions when discussing staffing, without treating them as a statement of Thai law. Our Thailand safety guide explains the wider clinic and credential checks.
Recovery: The Real Difference Between the Two Cities
The first week
Plan accommodation around the return visits your clinic expects. The patient who visited Kata Beach first wrote, "You go back every day for a head wash and a review," in their Bangkok account.
PHD says scabs dry and fall off within 7-14 days. Your clinic's washing instructions should explain how to care for the treated area during that period.
Can you swim or go to the sea?
PHD Clinic tells patients to avoid swimming, sauna, and strenuous exercise for one month. We would put swimming before surgery and leave the return to water to the treating clinic's clearance.
One patient who visited Koh Larn after a hair transplant in Thailand wrote, "I went to Koh Larn but obviously I couldn't enjoy it as much being that I couldn't play in the water." That r/HairTransplants account describes the practical limitation of planning an island trip during early recovery.
Sun, heat and humidity
PHD's published instruction is to avoid strong sunlight for two weeks. Get your own clinic's advice on head covering and outdoor time before you plan beach walks or sightseeing.
In an r/Hairtransplant discussion about recovering in Bangkok in April, someone who recovered in January said afternoon walks still made them sweat, while early-morning walks were manageable.
We'd prioritize an air-conditioned room and short journeys over choosing a season as a medical precaution. Patients discussing heat and humidity describe using air conditioning and staying close to the clinic; that gives you a practical plan without assuming a particular month protects the transplant.
Shock loss and the growth timeline
PHD Clinic describes shedding during the first 1-3 months, initial growth at 3-4 months, and full results at 9-12 months. Those are the clinic's stated expectations, not a promised timetable for your case.
Your local recovery stay ends much earlier than that. Ask how the surgeon will review progress once you're home, including which photographs to send and when.
When to fly home
One HairTran patient reported flying to Australia 48 hours after surgery, after two check-ins. A RealSelf reviewer described surgery near the end of a Thailand holiday followed by three further checks before departure.
The schedule varies by clinic. So agree on your departure with the treating clinic before buying a fixed return flight, particularly if leaving early would mean missing a planned check.
Getting There and Getting Around
Bangkok: airport to clinic
Suvarnabhumi is about 25 kilometers from downtown Bangkok, according to Wikipedia. That city-center distance won't tell you the journey to a particular clinic or hotel.
Airports of Thailand lists the S1 bus to Sanam Luang. Match your arrival transport to the actual clinic neighborhood, then arrange the shorter hotel-to-clinic trips separately.
Phuket: airport to clinic
Phuket International Airport is 32 kilometers north of Phuket city, according to Wikipedia. Airports of Thailand lists buses toward Phuket city and Patong, plus shared vans serving Patong, Kata, and Karon.
Choose accommodation after you have the surgery address and return-visit schedule. A hotel selected for its beach access may leave you with journeys you don't want to repeat after surgery.
Post-op transit: BTS, Grab, walking
In one Thailand patient thread, commenters favored Grab cars or taxis over walking and crowded trains. One warned about overhead rails and crowds on Bangkok's BTS elevated train system during early recovery.
That's a patient's preference, rather than a universal ban on public transport. A car can be the more comfortable choice when you want air conditioning and less walking.
The HairTran patient in the opening stayed 300 meters from the clinic and walked on procedure day. Use that as a hotel-planning example, then check the actual route and your clinic's instructions.
How Long to Stay and When to Book
Days to budget
Our Thailand hub recommends budgeting 7-10 days to include follow-up visits, with a day 5-7 healing check in its planning guidance. Treat that as a starting itinerary to discuss with the clinic.
Esthetic Hair says most patients plan around three nights near its Phuket clinic for the procedure and first follow-up. That shorter suggestion makes it especially useful to ask what happens after the first check.
A RealSelf review describes photographs at three and six months, followed by a one-year check. Ask whether later reviews are in person or remote, and who responds if you have a concern between scheduled appointments.
Our guide to planning your stay in Thailand covers the itinerary in more detail. Confirm the clinic's required visits before combining Bangkok surgery with another destination.
Booking queues and wait times
Ask your chosen surgeon for dates before booking flights, and decide whether you'd rather wait or compare another surgeon's plan.
What Patients Actually Say About Bangkok vs Phuket
The pattern: Phuket holiday before, Bangkok procedure
The Kata Beach patient enjoyed Phuket before surgery and stayed in Bangkok for clinic care afterward. Another r/HairTransplants poster planned sunnier activities around Phuket first, followed by a Bangkok resort stay for recovery.
That order lets you keep the beach part of the holiday without expecting to swim immediately after the procedure. It also keeps the early return visits in the city where you had surgery.
"Go to Bangkok": the recurring steer
In a r/Thailand thread asking for Phuket recommendations, one commenter said to "go to bkk and do your search." Another wrote, "Srry no idea in Phuket."
Those replies show how limited the recommendations in that conversation were. Neither gives you evidence about the work of a particular Phuket surgeon.
Independent Phuket procedure accounts
None of the patient accounts cited here describes a procedure in Phuket. Before choosing a Phuket clinic, ask for patient accounts that identify the surgeon and describe follow-up care.
A clinic's published service page can establish that it advertises hair transplantation. An account covering the consultation and later checks answers different questions about what being its patient involved.
Thailand vs Turkey (and Other Options)
One person booked with HairTran said Bangkok was easier to reach from East Asia than Turkey and that in-person checks mattered to them. Another said they were glad they had not gone to Turkey because of the rounded hairlines they had noticed there.
Use your own route and the named surgeon's plan when weighing countries. A package with a hotel still needs to fit the follow-up schedule, and a preference for a hairline design belongs to the individual surgeon you're considering.
Frequently asked questions
Is Phuket cheaper than Bangkok for a hair transplant?
There isn't enough comparable pricing to call either city cheaper overall. Bangkok has patient-reported per-graft figures; Phuket has a mixture of packages and per-graft offers. Get written quotes for the same graft estimate and compare the included care and travel costs.
How many days do I need in Thailand, and how many follow-ups?
Our Thailand hub recommends 7-10 days for planning, but clinics set their own schedules. Esthetic Hair suggests around three nights for its procedure and first check, while a Bangkok patient described daily washing and review. Confirm your visits and flight date with the treating clinic; another patient's early departure doesn't establish when you can leave.
Can I swim or go to the beach after the procedure?
PHD Clinic says to avoid swimming for one month and strong sunlight for two weeks. Put swimming before surgery, or wait until your clinic clears it. Staying beside a beach doesn't change those restrictions.
Is the heat and humidity a problem, and should I wait for a cooler season?
One patient describes sweat and comfort concerns even during January walks. Plan air-conditioned accommodation and short journeys to the clinic, then ask about outdoor activity. The patient accounts don't establish a medically best season for surgery.
Which hotel should I choose, and how should I get around?
Choose around your clinic's address and follow-up schedule. One Bangkok patient stayed 300 meters away; other patients preferred Grab cars and taxis to long walks or crowded trains. Check the route before assuming a nearby hotel is an easy walk, and get your clinic's transport advice.
Who actually performs the procedure?
Ask who makes the extraction incisions, who makes the recipient-site incisions, and who places the grafts. ABHRS treats the incision steps as non-delegable in its standards, while ISHRS says trained staff most often place grafts. Get the doctor's name and division of work before paying a deposit.
