10 Days After Hair Transplant: What Is Normal, What You Can Do, and When to Call Your Clinic
One HairTran patient in Bangkok reported that the clinic removed their scabbing on day 14, when it came away easily.
At 10 days after a hair transplant, scabs and redness can still be present, and washing restrictions may continue through two weeks. Follow your clinic's sheet, and call if pain, redness, swelling, bleeding or fluid is getting worse.
Bangkok Hair Clinic gives visible scabbing and redness 7 to 14 days to subside. A scalp that still looks recently treated can fall within that range; a worsening symptom needs a separate check.
What Your Scalp May Look and Feel Like on Day 10
The recipient area is where the hairs were transplanted. The donor area is where they were taken from, and the two areas can feel different while they heal.
Recipient Area: Redness, Crusts, and Short Hairs
You may still see crusts around the transplanted hairs or a pink scalp underneath. Bangkok Hair Clinic's 7-to-14-day range means day 10 can arrive before those visible signs have settled.
Smile Hair Clinic, in Turkey, describes short, stubble-like transplanted hairs at this stage. That early appearance gives you something to inspect, but it doesn't tell you the eventual density.
Pay attention to whether redness is settling or spreading. Bangkok Hair Clinic lists redness that gets worse, along with worsening pain or swelling, as a reason to call.
Itching, Tightness, and Tenderness
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) describes an initial day or two of discomfort followed by 7 to 10 days of tenderness to touch. Some sensitivity around this point is different from pain that keeps increasing.
A review in Frontiers in Medicine describes itching after follicular unit excision (FUE), where follicles are removed individually, as usually mild. It can settle over days or weeks, so an itch does not set a date for rubbing the scalp.
The same review puts frontal swelling's usual peak around days 2 to 3 and resolution within 5 to 7 days. New or increasing swelling at day 10 deserves a call rather than being treated as another routine early symptom.
The NHS also describes a tight, achy scalp for the first few days. Tell your clinic if tightness is persisting or changing, especially if it comes with worsening discomfort.
Scabs Coming Off at Day 10
Scabs don't all have to disappear on the same morning. The Frontiers in Medicine review gives 7 to 10 days as the usual period for FUE crusts to resolve with appropriate care, while Bangkok Hair Clinic gives 7 to 14 days.
So don't force the remaining crusts off to meet a deadline. HairTran tells patients not to pick or scratch, and its two-week follow-up includes checking the scalp and grafts, the transplanted units containing hair follicles.
If scabs remain at that appointment, HairTran says its medical assistants may use an olive-oil treatment under doctor supervision. Ask your clinic how it wants to handle stubborn crusts rather than copying the treatment at home.
Crusts persisting beyond two weeks should be evaluated, according to the review. Our hair transplant scabs guide covers the washing and removal questions in more detail.
Are Hair Transplant Grafts Secure After 10 Days?
Keep the handling restrictions your surgeon gave you. HairTran describes the transplanted roots as taking around two weeks to settle, so day 10 isn't automatic permission to scrub or pick.
A visible hair coming away with a scab doesn't let you identify graft damage yourself. The transplanted hair can shed during recovery, but suspected graft displacement needs the clinic's assessment.
Unexpected bleeding or fluid, or a graft that looks visibly dislodged, are reasons to stop the activity and call, according to Bangkok Hair Clinic. Don't pull at another scab to compare it.
Your First More Normal Wash
Use the wash instructions from the clinic that operated on you.
HairTran says to wash gently with room-temperature water and avoid hot or high-pressure water. Bangkok Hair Clinic says not to rub, scrub or scratch the transplanted area for two weeks.
That leaves a practical distinction between washing your hair and washing it the way you did before surgery. So check both the water pressure and how you touch the scalp.
One patient on Hair Restoration Network said their clinic allowed shampooing of both the recipient and donor areas from day 10. In the same discussion, another member pointed readers back to their own clinic's recommendations.
Before changing the routine, check what your sheet says about rubbing and loosening scabs. If it stops at the first week without explaining the next wash, ask the clinic to clarify those instructions.
What Bangkok Clinics Publish About Day-10 Restrictions
We compare what these clinics publish and haven't visited them.
| Activity | Published instruction and day boundary | If your sheet says something different |
|---|---|---|
| Washing | HairTran specifies gentle washing, room-temperature water and no high-pressure water. Bangkok Hair Clinic prohibits rubbing, scrubbing or scratching the transplanted area for two weeks. | Follow your clinic. |
| Hats | HairTran says to use its supplied protective cap as instructed. The HairTran and Bangkok Hair Clinic instructions compared here give no general day-10 clearance for an ordinary hat. Bangkok Hair Clinic's exercise guide says to avoid tight headwear in week 2. | Follow your clinic. |
| Work | Bangkok Hair Clinic says most patients can resume their daily routine as soon as the next day. HairTran allows early daily activities while restricting strenuous activity, excessive sweating and direct sunlight for two weeks. | Follow your clinic. |
| Exercise and sweating | HairTran says to avoid heavy sweating, intense exercise and saunas for 14 days. Bangkok Hair Clinic discusses low-intensity bike or treadmill work and light machine work during days 7 to 14, leaving straining or bending with free weights for later. | Follow your clinic. |
| Sun | HairTran says to protect the scalp from direct sunlight for the first 14 days. Day 10 remains inside that period. | Follow your clinic. |
| Haircut | Bangkok Hair Clinic says no haircut for one month. | Follow your clinic. |
| Hair dye | Bangkok Hair Clinic says no dye for one month. HairTran says to wait at least two months before coloring, perming or straightening. | Follow your clinic. |
| Travel and daily activity | HairTran recommends at least two weeks in total for international patients, although it describes three days as the minimum rest before flying. Its two-week scalp check is a separate follow-up to plan around. | Follow your clinic. |
The daily-activity language needs to be read with the restrictions beside it. Being able to go back to a desk doesn't give you clearance for a sweaty shift outdoors or a gym session afterward.
Work, Hats, Exercise, and a Haircut: The Practical Day-10 Questions
Returning to Work and Social Life
You may feel ready for work while redness and scabs remain visible. Bangkok Hair Clinic's early return-to-routine advice sits alongside its 7-to-14-day estimate for those signs to subside.
One RealSelf reviewer who had follicular unit transplantation (FUT), the strip-harvesting method, returned to virtual work on day 5 and in-person work on day 10. That was their schedule; your work still needs to fit the activity limits your clinic gave you.
Tell the clinic if your job involves heavy sweating, physical strain or direct sun. A general return-to-work statement doesn't answer those parts of the job.
Hats, Sun, and Outdoor Exposure
HairTran tells patients to use the protective cap it supplies according to its instructions. So get an answer about your own hat before substituting it.
A HairTran patient on r/HairTransplants reported receiving a cap for outdoor walks during the first 14 days. The clinic's direct-sun restriction still applies during that period, so a cap isn't permission to spend the day in the sun.
Exercise and Physical Activity
Day 10 is still within HairTran's restriction on intense exercise and heavy sweating. Bangkok Hair Clinic's days-7-to-14 advice discusses lower-intensity options, including light machine work, while leaving lifts that involve strain or bending down for later.
If your sheet says no exercise for two weeks, keep that restriction. So another clinic's treadmill guidance doesn't change the instructions for your operation.
Haircuts and Hair Dye
Bangkok Hair Clinic's one-month haircut restriction means day 10 is too early under its instructions. Dye has a separate comparison: one month at Bangkok Hair Clinic versus at least two months at HairTran.
The HairTran patient mentioned above reported a first haircut at around two weeks. Before booking your own, ask the operating clinic about the area you want cut and the method the barber will use.
Things to Avoid at Day 10
Keep avoiding picking and scratching, along with any water pressure, exercise or sun exposure your clinic still restricts. Scabs coming off do not cancel those instructions.
For alcohol or another activity your sheet doesn't address clearly, ask the clinic before restarting it. A wash date doesn't also answer when you can resume everything else.
Is the Donor Area Healing Normally?
Bangkok Hair Clinic places donor-area healing in the same 7-to-14-day period as the recipient area's visible scabbing and redness settling. It also lists temporary numbness in either area.
Visible healing and normal sensation can arrive at different times. The Frontiers in Medicine review describes sensory changes after FUE as typically transient, with some cases lasting several months. You might still feel numbness after the area looks healed.
One day-10 FUE patient on RealSelf described the donor area as healing well and estimated having "about 70-80 percent feeling back in the area." That estimate describes how that patient felt, not a target you need to match.
An Ape to Gentleman recovery-blog author described their donor area as almost healed at day 10, with existing hair growing back over it. The HairTran patient reported numbness beyond day 14 and sensitivity to touch at day 38.
Tell your clinic about persistent numbness or sensitivity at follow-up. Call sooner if the donor area develops worsening pain, spreading redness or pus, which Yanhee Hospital lists among reasons to seek its advice.
Shedding May Be Next, Not a Sign to Judge the Result
The American Academy of Dermatology says transplanted hair can fall out between two and eight weeks after surgery and describes this as normal. Day 10 comes before that window, so the short hairs you see now aren't a finished result.
It is too early to judge results.
Bangkok Hair Clinic places the shedding phase around weeks 3 to 4. HairTran describes transplanted roots settling over roughly two weeks before hair sheds.
Surrounding hair that wasn't transplanted can also shed, a concern often called shock loss. The Frontiers in Medicine review places recipient-area native-hair shedding within two to eight weeks.
Our hair transplant recovery timeline covers the later stages. For now, keep following the care instructions even if the visible hairs begin to fall.
What Is Usually Within the Expected Range, and What Needs a Call
A remaining symptom and a worsening symptom need different responses. Use the changes you notice to explain the problem to your operating clinic.
| Concern that can occur around day 10 | When to contact the clinic promptly |
|---|---|
| Scabs or redness still visible within Bangkok Hair Clinic's 7-to-14-day range | Pain, swelling or redness getting worse, according to Bangkok Hair Clinic. |
| Tenderness to touch around the end of the period described by ISHRS | Severe pain or unexpected symptoms, according to the NHS. |
| Itching that is settling over days or weeks, as described in Frontiers in Medicine | Unexpected bleeding or fluid at graft sites, or a visibly dislodged graft, according to Bangkok Hair Clinic. |
| Temporary numbness, listed by Bangkok Hair Clinic | Fever, spreading redness or pus, or bleeding that doesn't stop with gentle pressure, according to Yanhee Hospital. |
A new bump isn't something to diagnose by comparing forum photos. The Frontiers in Medicine review lists pus-filled spots, honey-colored crusts and increasing pain among possible infection signs; ask your clinic about new or worsening changes.
Our hair transplant infection guide explains the warning signs in more detail. If you already have them, contact the clinic rather than waiting for the next routine appointment.
What Patients Report at Day 10
Reddit and Forum Accounts
Another r/HairTransplants poster saw a few hairs come away with scabs at day 10, without pain or bleeding. Their doctor had told them not to remove the scabs aggressively, but the shape of the hairs still worried them.
A third poster asked after a shower: "Can I start to rub more yet? Should I be trying to get all of the crust off???" The r/HairTransplants discussion shows the practical problem with reaching day 10 without a clear next washing instruction.
Appearance can become its own worry once the scabs clear. One patient of a UK clinic wrote on Hair Restoration Network: "On day 10, after taking the scabs off, I could see a clearer picture. There were gaps. Lots of gaps."
If you're worried about gaps, raise them at follow-up. Keep that discussion separate from changing the wash or trying to remove more crusts yourself.
A Bangkok Patient's Two-Week Follow-Up
The HairTran patient reported that the clinic removed their scabbing on day 14, when it came away easily. They described wearing a baseball cap from roughly day 12 in their post, and from around day 7 in a later comment, as long as it didn't touch the grafts.
HairTran's published instructions direct patients to its supplied cap and include a two-week scalp check. Use those instructions to arrange your care, and ask the clinic about any change you want to make.
Day-10 Checklist
- Check your clinic's sheet before changing the wash, adding exercise, wearing a different hat or traveling.
- Keep the instructed washing routine. Don't pick or scratch scabs to meet a day-10 deadline.
- Keep your follow-up appointment. HairTran's published schedule includes a two-week scalp and graft check.
- Ask the clinic about remaining crusts if the instructions don't explain what happens next.
- Call promptly for worsening symptoms, unexpected bleeding or fluid, or suspected graft displacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wash normally at day 10?
Use your clinic's instructions. HairTran advises gentle washing without hot or high-pressure water, while Bangkok Hair Clinic says not to rub, scrub or scratch the transplanted area for two weeks. Being allowed to shampoo doesn't automatically mean you can wash with your usual pressure.
Are scabs supposed to be gone by day 10?
Bangkok Hair Clinic gives 7 to 14 days for visible scabbing and redness to subside. The FUE review in Frontiers in Medicine says crusts persisting beyond two weeks should be evaluated. Ask your clinic how to manage stubborn scabs without picking them.
Can I wear a hat, work out or return to work?
HairTran directs patients to its supplied cap, permits early daily activity and restricts heavy sweating for 14 days. Bangkok Hair Clinic discusses lower-intensity exercise during days 7 to 14. Follow your own clinic's limits, and ask specifically about your hat and the physical demands of your job.
What if a hair comes away with a scab?
The appearance of a hair or scab alone can't tell you whether a graft has been harmed. Contact your clinic if you suspect displacement, especially with unexpected bleeding, fluid or worsening symptoms. Bangkok Hair Clinic lists those changes as reasons to pause activity and call.
Can I rub harder to get the remaining scabs off?
Don't increase pressure just to clear them by day 10. Bangkok Hair Clinic prohibits rubbing, scrubbing and scratching for two weeks, while HairTran tells patients not to pick or scratch. Ask your clinic what to do at the next wash if crusts remain.
When should I call my clinic?
Call promptly for worsening pain, redness or swelling, unexpected bleeding or fluid, or a graft that looks displaced. Yanhee Hospital also names fever, spreading redness or pus, and bleeding that doesn't stop with gentle pressure. The NHS advises contacting the clinic for severe pain or unexpected symptoms.
